Feature projectsTĀKARO Ā POI / MARGARET MAHY FAMILY PLAYGROUNDClient: Ōtākaro LimitedLocation: ChristchurchTākaro ā Poi - Margaret Mahy FamilyPlayground – was a key part of theChristchurch regeneration. It is the biggestplay project undertaken in New Zealand andis the largest playground in the SouthernHemisphere. The project transformed anentire city block from ruins into a vibrantpublic space for play, with the aim ofreturning laughter and joy into the heart ofpost-earthquake Christchurch.Central to the design are the diverselandscapes of Canterbury - wetlands, plains, coastal edges and the Port Hills - and theseare all reflected in the different play zones. The space caters for inter-generationalplay for people of all ages and abilities; acommunity gathering space, an inner-citydestination for locals and visitors alike tomeet, connect and enjoy in multiple ways.At the heart of the park is a 130 m ‘story arc’granite pathway that uses elements from thestories of local children’s writers MargaretMahy and Elsie Locke, as well as narrativesand imagery from Ngai Tahu. Its success was immediately palpable, andthe Canterbury DHB 2016 wellbeing surveycredits the project with around two fifths(42%) of greater Christchurch residentscontinuing to be positively impacted by theopportunity to experience public events andspaces as a result of the earthquakes.WSP Capability StatementSince opening more than 1.5 million peoplehave visited the park. It has also attractedsignificant international interest from industryleaders, business owners and academicswho have expressed an interest in learningmore about the delivery of effective playprogrammes in child friendly cities. The design was led by WSP LandscapeArchitecture, and the result of close workwith Ōtākaro along with its statutorypartners, the Christchurch City Counciland Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu.
