St. Mary, Mother of the Church, Lee St. Joseph’s, Stockbridge St. Mary of the Lakes, OtisFROM THE ASSOCIATE PASTOROften, as Catholics, we are told that we should evangelize other people. We may think that means we need to convince them immediately toconvert and become Catholic. Although it would be great if we each hadthe opportunity to do this regularly, (imagine how many new Catholicswe would have!) these types of situations don’t usually fall unexpectedlyinto our laps.So how do we do evangelize as Catholics? Often, it happens in ways thatperhaps catch us off guard. Recently, on my day off, I was visiting myfriends at the school bus terminal; helping to evaluate a driver who cameback after several months off. During our time together on the bus heasked if he could ask a question of me. Of course, I said sure, expectingsome great school bus related question. However, instead, he began asking me questions about the bible, what we believe as Catholics about theend of the world and about heaven. We then had quite a conversationabout his life, his beliefs, and his relationship with God. It was a wonderful and unexpected opportunity to evangelize! Now, will this self-admitted “lapsed Catholic” suddenly return to churchthis Sunday because of our conversation? Maybe, or maybe not. But hemade a connection to God and to the Church through me in a positiveinteraction. I didn’t tell him he was horrible for being away or for hislack of understanding. I carefully listened and answered his questions thebest I could. Each of us is able do this. Simply listening and being supportive of people in their spiritual life journey is what we are called to as Catholics. Wemay not get it perfectly right every time and they may not come runningback to church, but that’s ok. God can still work through us, even in themost unexpected ways. We just need be willing to let him use us and ourlives for his work.God Bless,Fr. St. Mary’s Parish - Becket, East Otis, Lee, Otis, South Lee, Sandisfield, Stockbridge & TyringhamG M M 27 , 2022 4 S L God’s love story reveals itself in our stories, experiences, and aspirations. We areall prodigal sons and daughters. Thereare many times in our lives when wewould “sell our souls” in order to pursueour passions. We pursued what we wanted without regard for others or God. Wehave sowed our oats, thrown ourselvesinto careless pleasures, spent what weknow we ought to have saved, turned ourbacks on those we love and abused giftswe have been given. We even hit bottomand realized the silliness and self destruction of it all. We needed to comehome. We knew we erred and needed agentle presence to show us God’s unconditional love. This wayward journeyhome changed us. As much as we need to be welcomed, weare also the one who needs to do the welcoming and mercy giving. Those we loveneed our guidance, but they don’t alwaystake it. We know that what they are doing is off the mark, self destructive andwrong. We have to let them go and let ithappen, even though they might get hurt.As we wait and hope, they choose tomake their way back to us. They don’tneed us to judge them. They have doneenough of that to themselves. We immediately embrace them and are just happythey’re home. God uses us to help healthem. Knowing how much we cravedunderstanding and forgiveness ourselves,we can now freely give it away. God useswhat he has taught us to teach others. We are also the entitled ones. At least we“think” we are entitled. After all, wework hard for what we have. We cannotget our heads around the idea that someone can get something that I really deserve! If I do what I’m supposed to do, Iought to be rewarded for that, right? If Ido something wrong, I ought to pay theconsequences. This is justice, isn’t it?This is not God’s justice. God is all aboutlove, mercy, compassion, and forgiveness. God’s justice is love freely given without merit. We carry the stories ofthe prodigal son, the unconditional forgiving father, and the entitled angrybrother with us. When we make friendswith all three, humbly telling those stories to others makes us Christ’s ambassa LPi dors.ST. A brief history of St. Mary Magdalene Parish: St. Mary Magdalene Parish had its origins in 1998 when a group of the Catholic faithful in the Flint/Gresham area approached Bishop Edmund Carmody and asked for permission to establish a parish. The bishop began by allowing Mass to be celebrated in Flint each Sunday by the priests of the Cathedral.

The East Baton Rouge Parish is the third most populated Parish in Louisiana, after Orleans Parish (484,647) and Jefferson Parish (455,466). However, in the 1990s it was also one of the fastest growing Parishes in the State of Louisiana; the Parish added about 38,000 people, second only to St. Tammany Parish which added 46,760 people.
