It contains the following statement“Holiness enables us to turn away from the sinful habits of ourhearts, our families, and our societies” (p. 185). Holiness is nota term often used frequently today. What does it mean?According to the Catholic Bible Dictionary (2009), “all that isholy pertains to God (p.321).When I was a teenager, I struggled with living out the teachingsof Jesus. I felt overwhelmed and thought it was impossible forme to live out His teachings due to the daily temptationsprovided by the world around me. The problem was that Ithought that I had to do it on my own. I came to understandthat I could not lead the holy life God desired of me based uponmy own efforts. Once I realized that I needed God and that Hewas there on a daily basis to support and guide me, I feltencouraged to try and be holy regardless of what was going onin the world around me.The U.S. Catholic Catechism for Adults (2006) tells us that “TheChurch is holy. Jesus the founder is holy and makes his holinessavailable through his death and resurrection. The Holy Spiritimparts holiness to us, especially through the Sacraments. TheChurch’s holiness shines in the saints, and most especially in theBlessed Virgin Mary” (p.138). Jesus came to teach and show ushow to lead holy lives, He died on the cross for the forgivenessof our sins, and He established his Church with the Sacramentsto aid us on our pilgrim journey on earth. In the Canticle of Zechariah we hear that God “promised toshow mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant. This is the oath he swore to our father Abraham; to set us freefrom the hands of our enemies, free to worship Him withoutfear, Holy and righteous in His sight all the days of ourlife” (Luke 1:72-73).We can’t do it on our own!In the New Testament Saint James tells us to “Submit yourselvesto God, resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (4:7).Deacon Ken† FUNERALS AND BURIALSPrayers are requested for the soul of Clayda Hasting, PhilipDale Pregent & James L. O'Brien Jr. We thank God for thegift of his life and pray he is now at peace.Parish Book ClubThe Parish Book Club will be starting a newbook on Thursday, September 9th, 2021.The new book will be Walking Together:Discovering the Catholic Tradition of SpiritualFriendship, by Mary DeTurris Poust. We collected 4,195.00 and every organizationreceived a contribution. The cash which you generously donated was used to buy enough flowers and ribbons to put togetherbouquets of flowers for all of our nursing homes! Alpine, Langdon Place, Keene Center, Maplewood and Applewood all received atotal of 56 bouquets that were handmade by volunteers from the parish. In addition, 2 parishioners from St. Bernard’s and St. Josephpicked flowers from Piccadilly Farm to contribute to the project.I am including pictures of the flower arrangements because they brought beauty and joy to everyone. Those who received the flowersat the doors of the nursing homes expressed gratitude, surprise and joy when they saw the children’s artwork attached to the vasesand the generous display of love that the bouquets revealed. We definitely could not have done this project without all of the vases that you sent in to fill!! You were so generous that I was ableto store some more for our next bouquet making project in the coming months. Thank you everyone for responding so kindly!I am also grateful to those who volunteered to deliver the flowers after we spent time putting them all together. It was the kind ofcollaborative effort that Love for Life seeks to evoke from people. It allows you to determine what ways you are led to give ofyourselves and how each person’s gifts and self-donation are different and needed to make it all work.In talking to the staff members at the nursing homes, it is obvious that they are facing many difficulties in trying not to lock down thenursing homes while also keeping the residents safe. Your gifts are a source of love to show that we are praying for their safety andconsolation as the world struggles with how to take care of our mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts, uncles and siblings that rely onnursing care to live out their daily lives. The staff members wanted me to share their gratitude with and for you.
