TACKLING MALNUTRITIONNEARLY 1 IN 2 CANADIANS IS MALNOURISHEDUPON ADMISSION TO HOSPITAL1†Abbott is dedicated to supporting the fight againstmalnutrition in Canada. Since 2010, we have been avisionary partner of the Canadian Malnutrition Task Force(CMTF), collaborating to provide science-based nutritionsolutions to hospital teams. The CMTF’s research has shown that malnutrition is aserious problem. If left untreated, malnutrition leads tonegative outcomes. These include: Loss of muscle mass, strength, and patient mobility2 Increased hospital length of stay3 Increased readmissions4 Increased mortality5To improve nutrition care, the CMTF developed theIntegrated Nutrition Pathway for Acute Care,or INPAC. This evidence-based approach leads toappropriate detection and treatment of malnutrition, which has resulted in:6 More patients being screened and diagnosedwith malnutrition Increased use of advanced nutrition care practices Appropriate use of oral nutritional supplements Better nutrition after dischargeStudies show that providing oral nutritionalsupplements (ONS) as part of care improves nutritionstatus and patient outcomes compared to standardcare.7,8,10 By providing nutritional supplementation, you are helping patients meet their energy and proteinneeds, and this may lead to:7,8,11 Reduced patient complications Improved handgrip strength Reduced likelihood of readmission Reduced mortality‡† In adult patients admitted to medical or surgical units for 2 days.‡ In adult medical patients at nutritional risk admitted for 4 days.Continued on next page6

TACKLING MALNUTRITIONABBOTT’S “FEED THE PATIENT” INITIATIVEFollow the 3-step approach, based on INPAC, to identifyand treat patients with malnutrition:Find patients at nutritional riskFeed them targeted nutritionFollow them throughout treatmentFINDFEEDFOLLOW Within 24-48 hours of admission, usea valid screening tool to identifypatients who need nutrition care. The Canadian Nutrition ScreeningTool (CNST) is validated in medicaland surgical hospitalized patients, and can be completed by a dietetictechnician, clerk, or nurse.9 Provide early nutrition interventionsbased on nutrition assessment andseverity of malnutrition.6,8,9,11 Abbott’s family of oral nutritionalsupplements (ONS) and enteralformulas can help meet yourpatient’s specific requirements. A medication pass of supplementsprogram provides patients with smallamounts of ONS throughout the daywith or without medication.9 Monitor your patient’s nutritionalstatus to optimize compliance andadjust nutrition care to preferencesand needs. For continuity of care after discharge, recommend ongoing use of ONS athome.9o In the NOURISH study, malnourished patients whoconsumed up to 2 servings perday of Ensure Protein Max for 90days post-discharge had improvednutritional intake without affectingtheir usual food consumption.10 Recommend our Ensure orGlucerna Clubs to support nutritionalintake after discharge. For more information on INPAC and on best practicesfor nutrition care in Canada from CMTF,visit nutritioncareincanada.ca and consultthe INPAC Implementation Toolkit.REFERENCES:1. LEARN ABOUT scFOSWHAT ARE scFOS?Short-chain fructooligosaccharides (scFOS) are a sourceof dietary fibre that are naturally found in common foodssuch as bananas, asparagus, and onions.1,2 scFOS arerecognized as a source of dietary fibre by Health Canada3and are defined as prebiotics by the scientific communitybecause they stimulate the growth of beneficial intestinalbacteria.1scFOS AND THE GASTROINTESTINAL TRACTscFOS are not digestedin the small intestine, remaining intact until theyreach the colon, wherethey are fermented bybeneficial bacteria (suchas bifidobacteria andlactobacilli) to short-chainfatty acids (SCFAs).1,2,4WHAT BENEFITS DO scFOS PROVIDE? scFOS can help your patients meet their daily fibrerequirements.3 SCFAs are the preferred energy source for cells in thecolon.4Abbott pediatric nutritional products containing scFOS:PediaSure PlusPediaSure Peptide 1 CalPediaSure Complete Grow & Gain Abbott adult nutritional products containing scFOS:Ensure Protein MaxEnsure puddingGlucerna nutritional drinkJevity 1.2 CalJevity 1.5 CalNepro Suplena TwoCal HNREFERENCES:1.
