It is the smallestsection of the one universal flock whichhas been entrusted to Peter by the Lord.Under the authority of a responsiblepriest who has received the care of souls from hisbishop, the parish is, within the Church of Jesus Christ, the first community of Christian life; it is acommunity cut to human dimensions, in which theshepherd can know his flock and the flock can knowtheir shepherd At the heart of this area, we find theparish church with its bell-tower, its baptistery, itsconfessional, its altar and tabernacle, a symbol of unityand the centre of community life.”(Pope Saint Paul VI, reigned 19641964-1978)Raised to the Altars October 14th, 2018January 19th, A.D. 2020“IF YOU ARE WILLING TOSERENELY BEAR THE TRIALOF BEING DISPLEASING TOYOURSELF, THEN YOUWILL BE FOR JESUS APLEASANT PLACE OFSHELTER.”—st. JANUARY IS THE MONTH OF THE MOST HOLY NAME OF JESUS Pastor’s NoteNEWS FROMFATHERSALAKO’SMISSIONDuring Christmastidewe received a briefmessage from Fr. DesiréSalako, S.M.A. He sendsus all his Christmasgreetings from theMissions in Niger, with the added urgent prayerrequest for their safety, as the security situationis getting ever more dangerous. The picture ofthe Nativity scene is from one of the Catholicmissions in Niger, which is an overwhelminglyMuslim country. In an earlier message after All Saints Day, Fr.Salako had sent some pictures of the on-goingconstruction of the chapel for the new S.M.A.Seminary in Benin. From these pictures we cansee the progress. The stone altar is from amassif rock and made for some challengingengineering to get it inside. Thanks to yourgenerous contributions to Fr. Salako’s summerMission Appeals we have been able tocontribute to this good work.January 19th, A.D. 2020For the past year we were able to send 43,095to Fr. Salako’s Province of the Society of AfricanMissions, made up of the support we gave himfor his summer assistance and contributionsfrom you, the lay faithful of this parish.“GRATITUDE IS THE THING THATBRINGS US THE MOST GRACE.I HAVELEARNT THIS FROM EXPERIENCE; TRYIT AND YOU WILL SEE. I AMCONTENT WITH WHATEVERGOD GIVES ME, AND I SHOWHIM THIS IN A THOUSANDLITTLE WAYS.”—st. COLLECTS OF THE ROMAN MISSALDavid AllenSECOND SUNDAY INORDINARY TIME (2NDSUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY)(Missale Romanum 1970 & 1962)THE EPIPHANY PROCLAMATIONFOR 2020 IN THE YEAR OF GRACE(The Announcement of Easter and theMoveable Feasts:)Know, dear brethren, that as we haverejoiced at the Nativity of Our Lord JesusChrist, so by leave of God’s mercy weannounce to you also the joy of HisResurrection who is our Savior:The Sunday of Septuagesima is the 9thDay of February. On the 26th Day of February will fall AshWednesday, and the beginning of the Fastof the most sacred Lenten Season. On the 12th Day of April you willcelebrate with joy Easter Day, the PaschalFeast of Our Lord Jesus Christ. On the 21st Day of May will be theAscension of Our Lord Jesus Christ. On the 31st Day of May, the Feast ofPentecost. On the 11th Day of June, the Feast ofCorpus Christi. On the 29th Day of November, the FirstSunday of the Advent of Our Lord JesusChrist, to whom is honor and gloryforever and ever. Amen.January 19th, A.D. 2020“Almighty ever-living God, who govern all things, both inheaven and on earth, mercifully hear the pleading of Yourpeople and bestow Your peace on our times. Through ourLord, etc. Amen.”This prayer is distinctive in our Roman tradition, because it can be traced back to pagan times.Incorporated into Christian use, its substance wasnot altered; it only received a proper Trinitariandoxology at the end to qualify it as a distinctivelyChristian prayer addressed to the true God. This isan early example of inculturation. The Church does not (or at least, should not)destroy the pagan culture into which she is sent onmission. This is both unnecessary and often counter-productive to the mission, as Church historysometimes sadly attests. Rather, existing things inany given culture that are good, true, and beautiful, and therefore, in harmony with the Gospel, can andshould be carefully and organically preserved, even ifthey sometimes need purification. Our prayer abovecertainly contains nothing contrary to the faith, eventhough it is originally pagan. In fact, because it isnow addressed to the true God, this prayer can beanswered efficaciously. Our best patristic source on notion of inculturationis St. Gregory the Great in his correspondence withSt. Augustine of Canterbury regarding the missionto the pagan Anglo-Saxons, as is related to us by St.Bede the Venerable in his Ecclesiastical History of theEnglish People.(continued on next page .)The Second Sunday after Epiphany and of the YearMary Immaculate of Lourdes, Newton/Needham, Massachusetts5

(.continued from preceding page)The Second Vatican Council likewise addressed thisreality in its decree Ad Gentes, “On the MissionaryActivity of the Church.” According to this teaching, all that is good about any un-evangelized culture canfind its proper place following its transformingencounter with Christ. Thus, the universal Churchfinds a new voice in the newly Christianized culturewith which to praise God and articulate the faith.Perhaps one of the most important points in ourprayer above lies in its second petition: et pacem tuamnostris concede temporibus (“and bestow your peace onour times”). According to Our Lord in Jn. 14:27,peace is His gift, not something we can manufacturesimply by imitation. The peace of Christ is firstly aninterior gift of supernatural grace that conquershuman sin- the real root of all strife and division. Thus, in the final analysis, peace both precedes andtranscends any secondary human effort. In thesecond place, this peace is a fruit of Christiansactively cooperating with divine grace together, thatis, truly living the Beatitudes, as a result of their interiortransformation. As we beg God for His gift of peace today, we mightask Him to bestow peace especially to ourpersecuted brothers and sisters in Niger under thepastoral care of our dear missionary, Fr. DésiréSalako, SMA. We might also ask for deepenedhealing, conversion, and reconciliation in ourrelationships with family and friends, where needed.Only as we all are more deeply converted to ourloving Lord Jesus will we begin to manifest Hispeace more concretely in our circles of influence.Mr. David Allen, M.T.S., is the layPastoral Associate for our parish ofMary Immaculate of Lourdes.LECTIONARY-BASEDWEEKLY THURSDAYMORNING BIBLE STUDY:Led by David Allen,THURSDAY mornings at 8:20AM (after the 7:30 AM Parish Mass.) And Jesus also was invited, and His disciples, to themarriage. And the wine failing, the Mother of Jesus saith to Him: They have no wine. And Jesus saith to her:Woman, what is that to Me and to thee? My hour is not yet come. His Mother saith to the waiters:Whatsoever He shall say to you, do ye. Now there were set there six water-pots of stone, according to themanner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three measures apiece. Jesus saith to them: Fill thewater-pots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And Jesus said to them: Draw out now, and carryto the chief steward of the feast. And they carried it. And when the chief steward had tasted the water madewine, and knew not whence it was, but the waiters knew who had drawn the water: the chief steward callethto the bridegroom, and saith to him: Every man at first setteth forth good wine, and when men have welldrunk, then that which is worse; but thou has kept the good wine until now.
