from our pastorpax et bonumDear Folks,What a week: snow, trees, cars on I-95, and power outages. If youare reading this, then you got the email or the digital version ofour bulletin. With all the of closures this week, getting a printbulletin in time for the weekend was not possible. When I read of folks stranded on I-95, fortunately it was storiesof people who live near 95 bringing blankets and food to strandedmotorists. That is something I can picture in a serious trafficmess! Many in our parish are still without power 3 days after thestorm ended, but the folks that I ask have all found showers andheat with neighbors and fellow parishioners (ok, and a ResidentInn or two)!10 years ago then Pope Benedict met with Italian ski instructors. He praised the ski instructors saying, "Your engagement as'ski masters' helps to boost certain capacities, for examplesteadfastness in pursing aims, respect for the rules, tenacity inconfronting and surmounting difficulties.” I saved that quoteto use in the bulletin one day, and so today it is. Steadfastness, tenacity, and overcoming difficulties: sounds like a description ofgraces we have all had to rely on this week.New Parishioner WelcomeSunday, January 1610:30am-12pmWelcome to St. Mary's! The type of baptism that John performed was notyet a Christian Baptism; it was a preparation for ChristianBaptism through which sins are forgiven and the gift of theHoly Spirit is received.“1212 The sacraments of Christian initiation - Baptism,Confirmation, and the Eucharist - lay the foundations ofevery Christian life. "The sharing in the divine nature givento men through the grace of Christ bears a certain likenessto the origin, development, and nourishing of natural life.the faithful are born anew by Baptism, strengthened by thesacrament of Confirmation, and receive in the Eucharist thefood of eternal life. By means of these sacraments of Christianinitiation, they thus receive in increasing measure thetreasures of the divine life and advance toward the perfectionof charity."3zw1-U).JCHANGED FOREVER: THESACRAMENT OF BAPTISM BY FR.MIKE SCHMITZRenowned Catholic speaker and priest,Fr. So too is the role of the godfather and godmother, who must be firm believers, able and ready to help the newlybaptized - child or adult on the road of Christian life.55Their task is a truly ecclesial function (officium).56 Thewhole ecclesial community bears some responsibility for thedevelopment and safeguarding of the grace given at Baptism.”https://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/ P3G.HTMSAINT MARYof theI M M A C U L A T E C O N C E P T I O N stmaryfred.org5Jesus couldn't have been baptizedwithout a baptizer.
