Employee Resource GuideGet Connected and Give BackCommunity Service OpportunitiesStaff for StudentsOur community service outreach programextends the I am CPS Core Values beyond thewalls of our classrooms and office spaces. TheCommunity Service Group brings togethercolleagues from across the district once a monthto engage in community service with localnonprofit organizations.The Staff for Students group formed when CentralOffice employees shared that they sometimesfeel disconnected from our students. This groupis focused on creating opportunities for CentralOffice and Iowa Avenue employees to connectwith our students and schools.Recent trips have included serving food athomeless shelters at various locations aroundthe city.To join the group giving back in the community,contact Talent Development. Employee Resource GuideStrengthen Your Leadership SkillsLeadership CPSThis new program gives employees withthe desire to further their leadership skillsopportunities to learn about leadership roles andthe day-to-day operations of our schools.Principal and Assistant PrincipalProfessional DevelopmentPrincipals and Assistant Principals participatein a variety of professional developmentopportunities.Cohorts are chosen based on an employee’sleadership potential regardless of current level ortitle. Cohort members receive leadership training,a behind-the-scenes look at leadership at CPS,and have opportunities to develop and present aproject to Senior Leadership. Monthly professional developmentensures that school leaders have the toolsrequired to serve as instructional leaders,including training from Curriculum andoperational updates from other CPS CentralOffice departments.The first cohort of Leadership CPS opens in lateSpring/Summer 2019 and will commence duringschool year 2019-2020. Peer Cluster support sessions facilitate thediscussion of relevant data and resultingclassroom practices.Director and Manager Meetings Novice Principal Development includesmonthly cohort professional developmentmodules and collaboration, along withmonthly coaching support.Monthly meetings for Directors and Managersfocus on the development of leadership skills andsupports to strengthen the effectiveness of eachdepartment in Cincinnati Public Schools. By the spring of 2018, thedecision was made to pilota four-course series for CPS teachers.A four-course sequence is taught by a MiamiUniversity faculty member at Mayerson Academyand offered to CPS teachers at a discount:Fall Year 1 - Educational LeadershipSpring Year 1 - Data and Decision-makingFall Year 2 - Professional Development andImproving InstructionSpring Year 2 - Family-Community-SchoolPartnershipsCPS teachers can apply these 12 hours to themaster’s program in School Leadership thatincludes a principal’s certificate.Preliminary goals and action steps set for theleadership program include: Create a program that allows teachersto grow as teacher leaders or becomebuilding administrators Closely connecting the project work donein the courses to solving problems at thework sites Create a broad leadership communitycentered around the work of the cohortsCPS teachers are notified by email about thenext cohort. Teachers apply and selectionsare made before the end of each school year.Principals work in advance with selected teachersto identify topics and areas of need that canbecome the focus of their coursework.12
