February 2021 NewsletterGT3R at the NurburgringWelcome to the February edition of the Club’s e-Newsletter. We all greeted February with acompulsory five day lockdown, resulting in the cancellation of the first Club Meeting of the year.Hopefully this is not a sign of things to come and we can get back to “normal” as soon as possible. We enjoyed a mid-week evening sunset cruise to Fremantle during the month, but no Sports Seriesround, as it was rescheduled to January, hence a more condensed Newsletter this month. We were treated to the new Porsche 911 GT3 release however, and the debut of the Taycan closer tohome. Another fantastic evolution of a great sports car. Enjoy.Members gathering for the mid-week Sunset Cruise

Although I said “gaveaway”, this isn’t quite correct, as all memberspresent played a game of “Head and Tails” to seewho would win. After a couple of coin spins, theeventual winner was Club member Drew Forster.Porsche Club of WA — Committee 2021Club President : Aaron JonesClub Secretary : Hui ZhangMembership : Warren DeanSporting Director : Daniel BatheVice-President : Mark AdiwibowoTreasurer : Chris ClarkeWebmaster : Laurie ParmenterSocial Coordinator : Position VacantCorrespondence to : PO Box 447, South Perth WA 6151www.porscheclubwa.org.au

“Sunset to Sunshine” Cruise - 18th February 2021Well, a great way to end our brief lock-down period with an evening cruise from Hillarys to Fremantle. We all gathered at the north car park at Hillary’s Boat Harbour, and were greeted with a very fresh seabreeze. It was quite cool and forced some to raise their soft-top’s for some warmth before headingoff. It was great to see a variety of models turning up, as can be seen from these photos. As the sun began to set in the West, we drove out of the car park and headed down our beautifulcoastline towards Fremantle. There were windsurfers and kite-surfers making the most of the breezeas we headed past Trigg and Scarborough, ships berthed out at sea and even a drill rig called theOcean Apex sitting off our coast. All this, with a golden setting sun to boot. If you couldn’t make it,just get out there one night and drive it yourself. You won’t be disappointed.

“Sunset to Sunshine” Cruise - 18th February 2021Continuing south, we cut back to the coast around Cottesloe anddrove down to our destination in Freo. This was the Sunshine Harvester Works Building. Built around 19231924 by Hugh McKay, who had invented and patented the “SunshineHarvester” agricultural machines. These machines could strip, threshand clean grain in one operation. At the time of his death in 1926,the company was the largest agricultural implement manufacturer inthe southern hemisphere. The building was sold shortly after hisdeath to William Haughton & Co Pty Ltd who were wool brokers, general merchants and insurance brokers. It continued to be used byvarious wool brokers right up until 1982.It is now been set-up as a “small business incubator”, primarily tocreate a starting point for people to succeed in the food industry. These include initiatives that allow for pop-up stalls, a commercial kitchen to rent and various spacesfor events and workshops. One notable resident is Masterchef competitor Brendan Pang, whooperates his business “Bumplings” out of a streamliner inside the building. Members also had choicesof Mexican, Italian pizza’s, multiple gelato flavours and a couple of bars for a nice cool drink on arrival.Tasty nachos, loaded burrittos, pizzas and dumplingswere devoured by members. Many thanks to Gerald Ong for organising the cruise and of course to all the members who managedto make it mid-week for the run. We hope you enjoyed it.

New Porsche 911 GT3 (992)The seventh generation of our favourite high-performance sports car was developed in closecollaboration with Porsche Motorsport. It transfers pure racing technology into a production modeleven more consistently than ever before. The double wishbone front axle layout and sophisticated aerodynamics, with a love it or hate it “swanneck” rear wing and striking diffuser originate from the successful 911 RSR race car. With 375 kW andfuel consumption combined of 13.3 – 12.4 l/100 km, the four-litre six-cylinder boxer engine is basedon the drive-train of the 911 GT3R, tried and tested in endurance racing. The high-revving engine isalso used practically unchanged in the new 911 GT3 Cup. The result is a brilliant driving machine witha 0-100 time of 3.4 seconds, precise and high-performance – perfect for the circuit and superb foreveryday use.During final testing, it lapped the Nurburgring-Nordschleife, traditionally the ultimate proving groundfor all sports cars developed by Porsche, over seventeen seconds quicker than its predecessor.Development driver Lars Kern took just 6:59.927 minutes for a full 20.8-kilometre lap, in a PDKequipped car. The shorter 20.6-kilometre track, which had previously served as a benchmark, wascompleted by the 911 GT3 in 6:55.2 minutes.I remember the hoopla when the 918 Spyder brokethe lap record at the ‘Ring with a time of 6:57:00, back in 2013. The new GT3 has definitely put thattime in perspective! The improved grip on the aerodynamics side of the equation is the new swanmount rear wing that is manually adjustable into four positions, along with an adjustable front spoiler.

New Porsche 911 GT3 (992)Above: A new GT3 and a new benchmark lap of the ‘Ring for the model - 6:59:927Especially for the Porsche GT models, customers are increasingly requesting customised equipment. For this reason, the Porsche Exclusive range is also available for the new 911 GT3 and issupplemented by GT 3-specific options such as a lightweight roof made of exposed carbon fibre. Otherhighlights include exterior mirror tops made of carbon, darkened LED matrix main headlights andmatching Exclusive design rear lights with an arc of light with no red components. Guards Red orShark Blue painted wheel rims enhance the black alloy wheels. In the interior, equipment details suchas the dials for the rev counter and Sport Chrono stopwatch, seatbelts and trim strips set elegantaccents in the body colour or other desired colour. As exclusive as the 911 GT3 itself is the individual chronograph that Porsche Design offers exclusivelyto customers of the high-performance sports car. Like its motorised role model, it boasts a dynamicdesign, consistent performance and high-quality workmanship. Its housing reflects its Motorsportgenes. Just like the connecting rods of the GT3 engine, it consists of robust, lightweight titanium. Thetimepiece is powered by an individual winding rotor reminiscent of the wheels of the 911 GT3. Thecoloured ring of the dial can be customised in the paint colours of the 911 GT3.

70 Years of Porsche in Australia Celebrations - “The First Meets The Future”The trip down memory lane started in Port Melbourne, where the 356 models first drove ontoAustralian soil after being imported by Norman Hamilton seven decades ago. The next stop was theSouth Melbourne Town Hall, the historical site of the cocktail event that officially introduced Porsche tothe country on 1 November 1951.To complete the journey, the legendary forebears arrived at Albert Park, the home of Australia’s GrandPrix. Here, motoring journalist Andrea Matthews joined Alan Hamilton, son of Norman Hamilton, andGreg O’Keefe, a long-standing Porsche enthusiast and owner of the country’s first 365 Cabriolet, todiscuss Porsche's rich past and electrifying future. After a drive in the Taycan, both agreed it is the future of the Porsche sportscar: “It’s like a Porschebut better,” says O’Keefe, after admitting he feared the sports saloon “wouldn’t feel like a Porsche”.The highly anticipated Taycan began arriving at Porsche Centres around Australia at the end ofFebruary including here in Perth.
