Minimally Invasive Training Center set to openBy Chris KleinGenerosity can have an enormous impact on the livesof others. Good Samaritan’s new Minimally Invasive TrainingCenter is proof. Because of the generosity of many, thisworld-class center, set to open this fall, is expected to havean immediate and long-lasting impact on patient care.“Good Samaritan has always attracted top-notchphysicians and surgeons,” says Good Samaritan HospitalFoundation President and Chief Executive Officer MaryRafferty. “The Minimally Invasive Training Center will bea place where these experts can develop new surgicaltechniques, refine existing techniques, and test newsurgical devices. Our patients will be the ultimatebeneficiaries.”Located within the hospital, the three-suite Centerwill be home to important, groundbreaking medicalresearch, under the direction of the Hatton ResearchInstitute. Here, Good Samaritan’s staff physicians and surgeons, as well as the hospital’s teaching faculty and residents, will find the tools they need to pursue a wide scope ofresearch. Their findings have the potential to improve patient care not only within Good Samaritan Hospital, but wellbeyond.“We want Good Samaritan to be a place where patientscan find the very best care available,” says Rafferty. “Wethink the Minimally Invasive Training Center will helpto make that happen.”The Center’s completion is due to the generosity ofdozens of donors, including philanthropist Claire Phillips.“Mrs. Phillips continues to change lives through hergenerous gifts to the hospital,” says Rafferty.“We are so grateful for her support.”The new Center also will be a place where Good Samaritan’smedical experts will develop and refine their minimally invasive surgical skills using state-of-the-art equipment. Theywill learn to replace full, open surgery with procedures thatuse small incisions to minimize patients’ blood loss and pain, and promote more rapid healing.COMPASSIONATE GIVING 4 gshfoundation.com

A LIFETIMEof GOOD SAMMEMORIESBy Chris KleinSome memories are so sweet they bring tears to theeyes. Rita Bramkamp has plenty of such memories, many centered at Good Samaritan Hospital.Rita’s Good Sam experiences began in 1954 when sheleft her parents and 11 siblings in Holton, Indiana toattend the Good Samaritan School of Nursing. “Talkabout a fish out of water!” says Rita. “My high schoolgraduated 14 students; most of my nursing schoolclassmates came from huge schools.”Yet more than50 years later, she looks back on the experience as thestart of a wonderful journey.“I met so many great girls,” she sniffles. “We still havelunch every month or so.” Rita’s closest friends lived inGood Sam’s dormitory for out-of-town students. Shelaughs remembering the alligator that lived in thebathtub for a short time. “The housemother neverfound out!” A duck from Burnet Woods also spenttime in the dorm. “I was not the instigator,” Ritainsists. Remembering the comradeship amongstudents brings tears to her eyes. “It was such atreasure,” she says.In addition to lifelong friends, Rita gained aknowledge of nursing that would last a lifetime. After graduation she was recruited to work atCincinnati’s Longview Hospital, working first inresearch, then in Longview’s operating room. For 20 years she assisted during routine surgerieson many of the hospital’s 3,200 residents, includinggallbladders, urology, gynecology, labor and delivery.“I loved it. I couldn’t wait to get to work every day.”At age 41 Rita married Edward G. Bramkamp andtransferred to Holmes Hospital where she workedpart-time for 12 years. When Rita retired, wordtraveled fast and the volunteer requests beganpouring in. Happy to oblige, Rita’s career as avolunteer continues today. She especially enjoysRita Ross Bramkampvolunteering at Good Sam with some of her nursing school upper classmates, and some of herclosest friends. During their every-Friday craft-making sessions Rita says “sometimes we laugh sohard that people stick their head in the door to find out what is going on!” Her volunteer roles haveincluded Special Projects Chair for The Guild, helping to organize the hospital’s annual Fat Tuesdayice cream social, creating Easter favors for patients, and working tirelessly on the annual craft show. When her husband died, Rita endowed the Edward G. Bramkamp and Rita Ross Bramkampscholarship, awarded each year to a student of the Good Samaritan College of Nursing and HealthSciences. “What a great way to honor my late husband while also helping a student at my belovedalma mater,” she says fondly.COMPASSIONATE GIVING 5 gshfoundation.com
