VP Technical ReportMark Lamberson, CPDHello from your VP Technical. December’s meeting took place at LawrenceTechnological University. The TechnicalSession was on Plumbing Design, Coordination and Constructability. Kari Rosteck moderated this panel discussion, and Pam Hartsell, Steve Lodge and AlCulbreath discussed the topics. First ofall, I would like to say that it was great tohave Steve Lodge, Smith Group Director of Architecture, onthe panel. I also commend him for his bravery for being anarchitect in front of a fiery group of plumbing industry professionals that have had their fair share of battles with architects things could have gotten ugly in a hurry Al Culbreath represented the field installers and facilities management teams, andPam Hartsell represented plumbing design professionals andproject managers. The session was guided by Kari with some predeterminedtopics, but it was left open in format to the audience in casethere was further questioning or input. Topics included adequate clearance at equipment, architectural chase locations, issues encountered in the field, common ideologies behind thearchitectural program, and level of detail in today’s drawings. There was a lot of information covered in an hour. Here aresome of the take-aways that I got from the session. From Al’s experience in the field, we should all start a projectwith the end in mind. At some point in the future, all equipmentneeds to be serviced. Ensure that design and coordinationefforts take equipment and valve access spaces into consideration. Also, it is never a bad idea to bring the facilities management team, or a field plumber, into the design effort to get theirtake on installation and serviceability. Al’s recollection ofremoving and replacing equipment in U of M’s buildingsserved as a reminder of what happens when serviceability isn’taccounted for.Steve explained some of the thought process behind the architectural program. When the floor plans and ceilings are beingdesigned, there are a lot of factors driving the layout, andchanges to it. The architect tries to balance the owner’s wantsand needs for their facility while also providing necessaryspaces to house MEP services. Sometimes the spaces left forMEP fall in less-than ideal locations. These issues need to bebrought to the attention of the architect and coordinated withthem. The plumbing designer’s expertise aids the architect indeciding what can be done to properly conceal stacks, plumbing carriers, and roof drains while also providing adequateopen spaces for equipment. This may also be a good time tobring in the field experts to discuss how things will be built andmaintained. Steve also reinforced that as building models getmore detailed, the issues will be revealed sooner in design andcan be headed off earlier in the process. An example was newRevit equipment models that have the manufacturer’s recommended clearances attached to them.8Pam discussed plumbing design specifics. She covered information gathering at the onset of design. She also discussed special systems and equipment. In particular, the topic of clearancespaces required at domestic water booster pumps, water heaters, and valves was discussed. Also, a volley on architectural issues, like pipe routing and valve access within cloud ceilings and soffits, was carried out. Finally, the hot topic of plumbing chaselocations was tackled. All in all, this was a great session, and I was left wishing wecould push the time a little longer to get deeper into the topics. It is always great to quit while we are ahead, though, and bringthis up for another session idea next season. One more item I wanted to mention was the facility; LawrenceTech. They provided us with a top-notch auditorium, completewith all the necessary audio equipment. They also put on a finelunch for everyone, complete with all of the amenities. Thankyou to LTU and their hospitality. I hope we can make this aregular event in the future.I have a couple other items worthy of mention before I signoff. The annual ASSE Banquet will be held on Saturday, January 26th, 2019 at the Italian American Banquet Center in Livonia. See the ASPE Eastern Michigan web site for moreinformation, or reach out to a board member. There is alwaysgreat food and spirits, and there is always good company fromour industry there.CPD recertification, for those of us lucky to put this together inthe odd years, is approaching fast. Before you know it, we willbe half way into January and the scramble will be on to find allof the backup for your submittal. Please don’t hesitate to reachout if you need any information on this process. In January, the road show goes to my stomping grounds – Limbach’s facility in Pontiac – for a presentation on vacuum plumbing systems. I hope to see you there!I wish everyone a Happy Holiday Season, and a wonderful 2019.WomenofSponsored byASPEengaging, retaining, advancing women in the plumbingDedicated toanddesign industry through:3Mentoring programs3Membership outreach3Partnerships with industry-relatedassociations3Educational and leadership offeringsTo join the WOA, email skidd@aspe.orgFor more information, visit aspe.org/woaJANUARY 2019

Affiliate Liaison ReportDann Holmes, ASPE Region 2REGION 2: MUCH TO BE THANKFUL FOR2019 will be a very busy year for ASPERegion 2. This is the year for us to reallyshow off our professionalism. A time toshine. Mark your calendars and prepare totravel. I hope our sponsors and supportersare reading this and taking notes! Our bigmonths will be June, August, and October.JUNEPencil in the first weekend in June (I’m guessing the 7th & 8th).By default, our alphabetical host for our Region 2 President’smeeting would have taken us to scenic Johnstown, PA followedby one of the sports capitals of North America, belovedPittsburgh, PA. Seeing as these two chapters are co-hosting our2019 ASPE Technical Symposium in Pittsburgh, the Rochester,NY Chapter, under the leadership of Jennifer Wengender, P.E.,have graciously offered to host our annual President’s meeting.Rochester in known as the gateway to the Finger Lakes and the3rd largest city in New York State behind New York City andBuffalo.AUGUSTThe HITS 2019 Conference will be held on August 6, 7, & 8that the Buffalo Grand Hotel in Buffalo, NY. ASPE needs to inject(pardon the pun) themselves into this conference. For those thathaven’t heard me talk about HITS in the past, understand thatHITS is an acronym for Healthcare Infection TransmissionSystems. The HITS Consortium looks to promote public healthby reducing healthcare-associated infections through theintegration of best infection prevention practices.HITS focuses on the major pathogen transmission systems inthe healthcare setting specifically; surfaces, person-to-person;WATER, and AIR. There are many ASPE professionals readingthis right now whom spend all day, every day of theirprofessional career engineering water and air systems. ASPE,as well as ASHRAE engineers must attend this conference.Healthcare facilities are some of the most, if not THE MOST,complex engineered plumbing systems in the world. I’mhonored to have been asked by the HITS Board of Directors tobe on the HITS Advisory Board. With that said, I’d love to getinput and hear ideas from ASPE members, especially thoseinvolved in Region 2 healthcare systems on what you’d like tocontribute. At this early stage, speakers and sessions are beingdiscussed. You can stay informed and get involved bybookmarking www.hitsconsortium.org or contact me.SEPTEMBERAlthough this conference is not in Region 2, keep it on yourradar. It will have an effect on your engineering future.Bookmark www.legionellaconference.org too.I’ll be writing about this conference and our role in developinga Water Safety Culture in future articles.OCTOBERASPE is currently seeking “Call for Presenters” for the 2019Technical Symposium to be held at the Wyndham GrandPittsburgh Downtown, October 24-27th. The deadline forabstracts is February 15th. ASPE members, affiliate sponsors, and industry partners are encouraged to put forth submittals fortechnical sessions. Share what you know with your peers.Opportunities for sponsorships are underway too. Sponsorshiplevels are Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. There are benefitsto sponsoring including visibility and recognition of yourcompany to ASPE members, enhancing your image, prestige, and position with the plumbing engineering community. Itoffers you the opportunity to build relationships with designers, engineers, manufacturers and other industry patrons.Region 2, 2019 is your year. Make it happen. AYP LiaisonKari RosteckHappy New Year! The ‘Day in the Life’ series continues aswe get to know another member of theEastern Michigan ASPE Chapter! I amalways excited to interview members ofour group, so we can familiarizeourselves with all the unique jobs, rolesand career paths in the plumbingindustry. This month, I have asked Sean McIntosh, aMechanical Engineer at Stantec to answer some questionsabout the role of plumbing design and engineering in thebuildings industry.Q: What was your first job out of College?A: SSOE Group. I had already been working there whilein college.Q: What kind of buildings have you worked with? (ie,Higher Ed, Industrial)A: K12, Higher Education, Industrial and Retail.Q: What is your day to day schedule like?A: I work earlier in the morning until the evening typicallyfocusing on the high priority work first and then try to touchbase with any other project requirements through the day. Then usually back to the high priority work.Q: What resources do you find most useful today?A: Code books, ASPE design books and the CameronHydraulic Data book.Q: When you started your career, what was your method oflearning all the new information? How did you keep trackof it all?A: I created a binder with tabs of each topic of design.Q: If you’re brave – what was a design mistake you madeand will never forget?A: Sanitary was well below the lower level floor on a projectbut not below the elevation of the manhole cover so backwatervalves had to be installed after bids.Q: What was the most exciting project you worked on?Why?A: That’s a tough question. Each project has its ownexperiences and outcomes as well as challenges. I thinkBloomfield Hills High School was one of the most exciting. That being for many reasons one of which is it was the firstproject I worked on at my current employer and also becauseof the many challenges and it brought forth.Sponsored byQ: What should our profession be working towards in thefuture? Is there anything we aren’t prepared for?A: The poor infrastructure in the country and old systems thatwill need to be replaced eventually is something to be preparedfor. This will be mostly a civil task but it will eventually affectthe end users.Q: Do you have any advice for an ASPE YoungProfessional?A: Never be afraid to ask questions! The more questions thebetter. I have learned most of what I know in this business byasking questions of my coworkers while working on projects.WomenofHappy New Year!Kari RosteckAYP EMC LiaisonASPEASPE AnnouncesThe Women of ASPEThe mission of the new Women ofASPE (WOA) special-interest group is to engage, retain, and advance women in theplumbing design industry through education, leadership development, and networkingopportunities.
