A New PatronFATHER KYLE SCHNIPPELLast week in this space, I discussed our needfor a new patron, with a specific call to all thegroups in the parish (and even parishionerswho feel inspired!) to submit potentialcandidates to be the Patron for our Family ofParishes. Today, I would like to outline theformat for these submissions. As I anticipate alarge number of submissions, they must followthis outline in order for the review team tocompare like for like.If you, or an organization of which you are amember, would like to submit a potentialpatron Saint or Mystery of the Lord forconsideration, please include the followinginformation, in this order: Your Name or Organization Proposed Patron Provide a brief biography of the saint orsynopsis of the Mystery How or Why does this proposed Patronspeak to you as a group or individual? How does this Patron speak to life as aCatholic Christian in the 21st Century? How does this Patron speak to the reality ofour five parishes within this Family ofParishes? Now, a few other ground rules. While I love and adore the Blessed Mother, it ismy hunch that a majority of the Families ofParishes will be named in some sort under herhonor. (On a recent call with Pastors in theArchdiocese, this was verified: three out of fouralready submitted were some derivation of‘Our Lady of . The fourth was Divine MercyFamily of Parishes.) We have the BlessedMother with us always, let’s dive a little deeperto seek a wider variety of potential patrons. As noted in the previous paragraph, severalFamilies of Parishes have already identifiedpotential patrons. The Diocese is asking thatwe avoid duplication of efforts. To that end, Iwill run submissions past the current list, as Iknow it. Unfortunately, I do not know of aplace where they are listed online, as of yet.I always give extra credit to Confirmationstudents who research and find saints that arenew to me. The same will go here, too; and Iknow a lot of saints!Patron submission forms can be found on allwebsites and Facebook. Hard copies will beavailable at all the churches in our family;return completed forms to the Parish Office ormail to the St. Peter Parish Office. As mentioned last week, the deadline forsubmissions is Friday, October 21. Please submitcompleted forms to Mary Beth Sheleman(msheleman@saintpeterparish.org) or to LauraJoliat (ljoliat@saintpeterparish.org).The review team is yet to be identified, but willconsist of members of each parish, both staffand parishioners. The top five or so selections,as determined by this review team, will bepresented in mid-November for parishionercomment and contribution prior to the newPatron being selected.Once the patron is identified, new emailidentifiers will be developed, as will the Familywebsite and Facebook identifiers. As always, prayers are greatly appreciatedand much needed throughout this process!POPE FRANCIS’ PRAYER INTENTION for OCTOBERWe pray for the Church; ever faithful to, and courageous in preaching the Gospel, may the Church be acommunity of solidarity, fraternity and welcome, always living in an atmosphere of synodality.OCTOBER 2, 2022 27TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

SACRAMENTSGOSPEL MEDITATIONBAPTISMS: Call the Parish Officewhere the Baptism will beperformed for information. HolyCross and Our Lady of the RosaryBaptisms are by request. St.Christopher on the first and thirdSunday at 12:15pm. St. John onthe second Sunday at 12:00noon,and on the third Sunday of themonth during the 4:00pm VigilMass or the 10:30am SundayMass. St. Peter, every Sunday, at12:00noon.As adults, unless we are dealing with children,“obedience” is not a word we typically like tohear. It often brings connotations of militaryprotocols, deference to superiors at work, orconforming to laws and practices. In aculture that has learned to challengeauthority, being obedient is understood moreas something I “have” to do, not “want” todo. Do you ever see merit in wanting to beobedient? Encouraged to developindependent, self-sufficient egos and personas, we learn to focus on our own wills andmerits as we strive for success and achieve a sense of well-being. Giving ourselves over tothe will of another, especially when done blindly, can sometimes carry more risk than weare willing to take. Also, blindly following orders without any deference to ethics ormorality can lead to atrocious crimes and violence against humanity.COMMUNION: Call the ParishOffice of the church you attend ifyou or a family member needsCommunion brought to yourhome or nursing facility.St. Ignatius of Loyola states, “There are three sorts of obedience; the first, obediencewhen a strict obligation is imposed upon us, and this is good; the second when the simpleword of the superior, without any strict command, suffices for us, and this is better; thethird, when a thing is done without waiting for an express command, from a knowledgethat it will be pleasing to the superior, and this is the best of all.” St. Ignatius sees obedienceas an act of love. When the person we are obeying genuinely has our best interest inmind, acting themselves with love and integrity, then what St. Ignatius says makesexcellent sense. When mutual trust and a bond of love and respect are present, obedience can lead to freedom and truth.MARRIAGE: Arrangements areto be made six months in advance. Please call the St. Peter Office.RECONCILIATION: Holy CrossChurch on Tuesday at 5:30pm.Our Lady of the Rosary Churchon Thursday at 7:30pm.St. Christopher Church on Fridayat 10:00am, Saturday from 3:30 to4:30pm.St. John the Baptist Church onThursday at 7:45am and Saturdayfrom 2:30 to 3:30pm.St. Peter Church on Tuesday at7:00am, Wednesday at 5:30pm,and Saturday from 3:00 to 4:00pm.Also, by request.Regularly scheduled Confessionswill only be available behind thescreen; we will no longer offer aface-to-face option.ANOINTING of the SICK:Priests are available to administerthe Sacrament of the Sick. Pleasecall the St. Peter Office.VOCATIONS: For more details, visit cincinnativocations.org.We ask God to increase our faith. In other words, increase our trust that God knows besthow to live and act in this world. We desire the same confidence, determination, andpatience Jesus had that the fulfillment of God’s vision would one day come. Nurturing adeep love of God and trusting in his providence, we obediently do what we know ispleasing to God: love, repent of sin, show mercy, be compassionate and fight injustice. As we willingly give witness to our faith, we do only what we are obliged to do, expectingnothing in return. Spared from the task of having to figure it all out for ourselves, wediscover freedom.READINGS FOR THE WEEK OF OCTOBER aturday:Next Sunday:Hb 1:2-3; 2:2-4/Ps 95:1-2, 6-7, 8-9/2 Tm 1:6-8, 13-14/Lk 17:5-10Gal 1:6-12/Ps 111:1b-2, 7-8, 9 and 10c/Lk 10:25-37Gal 1:13-24/Ps 139:1b-3, 13-14ab, 14c-15/Lk 10:38-42Gal 2:1-2, 7-14/Ps 117:1bc, 2/Lk 11:1-4Gal 3:1-5/Lk 1:69-70, 71-72, 73-75/Lk 11:5-13Gal 3:7-14/Ps 111:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6/Lk 11:15-26Gal 3:22-29/Ps 105:2-3, 4-5, 6-7/Lk 11:27-282 Kgs 5:14-17/Ps 98:1, 2-3, 3-4/2 Tm 2:8-13/Lk 17:11-19REFLECT AND RESPOND TO THE GOSPELFIRST READING: The prophet Habakkuk complained to the Lord about theviolence and misery that existed in his time. In response, the Lord instructedHabakkuk to record the vision He sent him, and to be patient in waiting for itsfulfillment. Thank you for yourcontinued support and generosity. This past weekend, it was announcedthat the Northeast 10 Family of Parisheswill only offer Confessions behind thescreen. The Catechism of the CatholicChurch tells us that “sin is before all elsean offense against God, a rupture ofcommunion with him. At the same timeit damages communion with theChurch.” It is important to making use ofthe Sacrament of Confession a regularpractice. That being said, it doesn’tmake the nerves of going to Confession go away. Those whogo to the Sacrament of Confession have a right to remainanonymous and Father Kyle and I believe that no longeroffering a face-to-face option for Confession will remove apotential obstacle for those who might shy away from theSacrament of Confession thinking they have to face the Priest.I know that the face-to-face option lends itself to be able toask for advice from the priest. As your spiritual fathers, FatherKyle and I want to walk with you on your journey as you grow inholiness. You are more than welcome to still ask questions inthe Confessional or meet with us outside of the confessional.Thank you so much for understanding and being patient withus as we are in this time of so much transition.– Father HaleST.
