2International Overdose Awareness Day Partners’ Report 2021

A heartfelt thanksOverdose is an opportunist, ready and waiting to intrudeinto everyday neighbourhoods, everyday networks, everyday families, regardless of where we are in theworld.Convened by Penington Institute, International OverdoseAwareness Day is our global community’s responseto this crisis – a campaign that has ballooned into atruly worldwide phenomenon. On August 31, diversecommunities unite to focus attention on the tragedy ofoverdose and to respond to this in a proactive way.IOAD is a time for looking forward; for initiating theconversations that will create a society that is safer, better informed, more compassionate and moreempowered to prevent overdose. In 2021, IOAD was observed through workshops, rallies, vigils, prayer services, training sessions, speeches, exhibitions, summits and negotiations, as just a fewexamples. It took place in more than 20 nationallanguages, in at least 37 countries on six continents. So many of you havecontributed to this campaign– whether by hostingan event, calling for thedevelopment of evidencebased drug policies orsharing your thoughtspublicly on social media –and deserve to feel immensesatisfaction.IOAD continues to force a rethink of the harms created byoverdose, whether that results from legal pharmaceuticalsor illegal substances such as methamphetamine orheroin. This report is dedicated to Penington Institute’s manythousands of extraordinary IOAD partners around theworld.“Ioad is a timefor lookingforward; for initiatingthe conversationsthat will create asociety that is safer, better informed, morecompassionate andmore empowered toprevent overdose.”John RyanCEO, Penington InstituteConvenor of International Overdose Awareness DayI’m proud to present this 2021 IOAD Partners’ Reportin the 20th year of IOAD – a year in which individuals asdiverse as frontline workers in Nigeria, university studentsin Puerto Rico, multinational corporate executivesat Google and political leaders including UnitedStates President Joe Biden have prioritised overdoseawareness.International Overdose Awareness Day Partners’ Report 20213

“More activitieswere offeredonline than everbefore, supportedby resources newlycreated and/orcustomised by ourteam. Our achievements to datePenington Institute took custodianship of IOAD in 2012and has now convened the day for a full decade. TheInstitute connects lived experience and research toimprove community health and wellbeing in relationto drugs, including alcohol and pharmaceuticals. As aleading Australian public health promotion charity, we areproud to support this campaign to save lives. In 2021 IOAD was set for the first time entirely againstthe backdrop of one of the most immediate and allconsuming health crises our world has ever known. While many activity hosts in 2020 were forced to changecourse midstream, adapting planned events to satisfylocal restrictions after the COVID-19 pandemic had beendeclared, in 2021 our partners prepared from the outsetto manoeuvre around the inevitability of this challenge. The adaptability, foresight, preparedness and resilienceof our IOAD community is amazing, regardless of theimpact of COVID-19.More than 730 events were formally registered on theIOAD website – we believe this represents just the tip ofthose that took place on or around August 31, involvinganywhere from only one or two up to thousands ofparticipants.More activities were offered online than ever before, supported by resources newly created and/orcustomised by our team and shared both as downloadsthrough the OverdoseDay.com website and in one-onone liaison via social media and email.4These posters, guides, fact sheets, letter templates, graphics and audiovisual slides were supplementedby material generated within local regions, providedby in-country national drug or health organisations,or developed by you and your fellow activity hostsyourselves.Insights from those at on the front line of the campaignwere collected in September through a survey of roughlyone-third of IOAD partners worldwide. In all, 94 per cent of hosts in 2021 rated their events as“successful”, and 92 per cent said they had receivedsupport from our staff at Penington Institute.Supporters’ motivation for organising events spans thefull range of IOAD goals: advocating for policy change raising awareness of overdose fighting stigma for those affected by overdose remembering loved ones lost to overdose holding a commemoration or memorial service showing solidarity with and/or support for peopleaffected by overdose raising funds for overdose prevention initiatives encouraging communities to respond to overdose as alocal issue supporting evidence-based responses that save lives reminding people of the risks of overdose providing education and training, including inrecognising and responding to overdose and inknowing which support services are available.International Overdose Awareness Day Partners’ Report 2021

In 2021, IOAD was observed both in-country and online, delivering activities worldwide6International Overdose Awareness Day Partners’ Report 2021

Those attending IOAD events are also diverse, comprising: people who use drugs family members and friends of people affected byoverdose health and community workers advocates and activists politicians and government staff law enforcement and emergency services personnel the general public. One in every three survey respondents has now takenpart in IOAD three or more times, yet at the other end ofthe spectrum 35 per cent of hosts surveyed held theirfirst event in 2021, indicating robust and expandingenthusiasm for the campaign. Clearly, IOAD is attractingand accommodating new supporters while keepingregular participants fully aligned and engaged. Our IOAD community is resourceful, innovative and frugal– based on our 2021 findings, 45 per cent of events arerun on a budget of AUD 200 or less, and only 16 percent invest AUD 1,000 or more. The results produced are anything but modest, however. In the late August–early September period (peaking onAugust 31 and in the one-week window immediatelyeither side of this date), IOAD earned media coverage inmore than 20 national languages in at least 37 countries.Seventy-three per cent of events were reported on by atleast one form of media, with print and online being themost common. Analysis shows that, globally, IOAD 2021was mentioned almost 7,000times in news reports.International Overdose Awareness Day Partners’ Report 2021The value of this global media impact (as measured by anindependent monitoring agency) was a staggering 36 percent higher than just two years earlier.Social media, too, plays an ever more important role inpromoting and recording IOAD and its achievementsglobally. Penington Institute engages, supports andinforms audiences through four dedicated social mediachannels on three of the most popular mainstreamplatforms: @InternationalOverdoseAwarenessDayon Facebook, @OverdoseDay on Twitter, and both @overdoseawarenessday and @overdosetribute onInstagram. IOAD 2021 appeared in 25,000 social mediaposts (peaking on August 31 with a potential audience of170 million people). The geographic expansion of IOAD into fresh frontierscontinues. In 2021, at least five countries joined thecause for the first time: Qatar, Mauritius, Colombia, theSeychelles and Burundi.“Globally,IOAD 2021 wasmentioned almost7,000 times in newsreports. The valueof this global mediaimpact (as measuredby an independentmonitoring agency)was a staggering 36per cent higher thanjust two years earlier. These statistics are undoubtedly impressive, but IOAD’strue impact is ultimately measured by how it fulfills itsmission: to end overdose, to remember without stigmathose no longer with us and to acknowledge the griefof loved ones left behind. This campaign aims to savelives and transform them for the better by enhancing thecapacity and resilience of communities to respond tooverdose-related harms. In 2021 the joint efforts of our IOAD community reachednew heights in promoting an understanding of overdoseand the actions required to end it.7
