An Historical Sketch of The MapThe Map of Rutland County, Vermont 1854 is animportant historical document. It was the resultof the most comprehensive survey made to thatdate of the 25 towns in Rutland County. The mapattempts to pinpoint the names and locations ofevery residence, workplace, church and school. This map is the first of eleven Vermont countymaps created in the 1850s - a period of extraordinary map-making in America. The author ofthis map, J. Chace Jr., was also responsible forthe Windham County map(1856) and for several county maps in nearby New York and NewHampshire. Little is known about him or the others credited on the map’s face, but it may be thatthey were associated with Robert Pearsall Smith,a prolific publisher of such maps. Smith hadmap production facilities in Phildelphia, and in1853 was credited as co-publisher of a New Yorkcounty map with James Scott - the publisher ofthe Rutland County map.We do know the general methods used for thesecounty map projects.similar to the wheelbarrow-like device pictured here,or one drawn by horse and buggy. The surveyorwould ask the names of farmstead owners as hepassed by, and would surely add a brief sales pitchfor the new map. after all, the map would carry thename of the resident, engraved upon it. The originalroad surveys for this privately-produced map werethe most comprehensive yet made. This map servedas the basis for later mapping for decades afterwards.Publication was often announced in local newspapers, and local offices were set up where advance ordersfor the new map could be taken. A typical mid-1850sprice was five dollars per copy. Prominent citizens allowed their names to be used in the map testimonials. Some paid extra for the honor of having their homesand businesses featured in engravings in the marginsof the map. The map was printed on four separatesheets (probably on large stone printing plates) andassembled and glued together onto a cloth backing. Each copy was then hand-colored in several differenthues, varnished, and mounted on wooden rollers. The large size -- about 3’ x 5’ -- has often proved animpediment to display. Copies have commonly beenplaced in storage, usually in attics, where they havesuffered from the effects of heat and leaky roofs.Originals in good condition today are rare items.Roads were measured with a wheel odometer,The body of the original map was drafted at a scale of 1” to the mile. In this publication, maps are at varying scales, designed sothat each town fits on one page. Map of Rutland County, VT 1854 2005 Old Maps, West Chesterfield, NH 03466www.old-maps.com
