Such melancholic scenes created anunpleasantly different experience at the airports allover for many. The hustle and bustle of travellers atinternational airports was completely restricted asCovid-19 pandemic led to strict border closures andrestraints forbidding people from travelling. Eventoday, the international travelling patterns havebeen highly affected and impacts felt by aviationindustry is deep and massive.Furthermore, rules and regulations such asmandatory Covid-19 tests before travel, quarantinerelated protocols, entry to only specific group ofpeople and even complete travel ban imposedby authorities of different destinations has ledto a serious decline in the number of passengers

IMPACT OF COVID-19 ON INTERNATIONALPASSENGER TRAFFIC IN 2020AirlinesPassenger drop % in 2020Nepal Airlines-62.77Qatar Airways-67.32Himalaya Airlines-48.95Fly Dubai-73.63Air Arabia-70.19Indigo Air-70.78Air India-82.90Malindo Air-76.37Malaysian Airlines-68.88Thai Airways-83.62(Source: The Kathmandu Post, 2021)for airlines companies. As such, among the variousbusinesses that run under aviation industry which arepassenger and cargo airlines, aircraft manufacturingcompanies, airport managing companies, Air NavigationService Providers (ANSPs), catering and other serviceproviding companies, passenger airlines have observedsevere impacts. More specifically so, the pandemic hashad a serious toll on airlines business. It is already well-known that growth of commercialaviation is intrinsically linked with tourism, trade, traveland connectivity. UNWTO, a specialized agency ofUnited Nations has stated that there has been a decline ininternational tourism receipts between USD 910 to 1,170billion in 2020, compared to USD 1.5 trillion generated in2019, with 100 percent of worldwide destinations havingtravel restrictions. As the data reflect, Nepali aviationindustry has also been bearing perils of the ongoingpandemic.Let us ponder upon in detail about the case ofTribhuvan International Airport (TIA), which is theonly international airport in Nepal. TIA has seen ahuge decline in passenger flow in the past year. Thepassenger traffic declined by 73.29% and only 1.10million international passengers travelled through the12 DANFEairport which is a loss of 3.03 millionpassengers whereas aircraft movementhad a 68.4% decline with only aroundten thousand take-offs and landings ascompared to the previous years. The international flights were allcancelled in Nepal from March,2020 until September 2020. Regularflights were disrupted and only fewrepatriation and rescue flights withprior permission from the governmentwere able to operate during this time. The state was also on a completelockdown from March 24, 2020 andwith the ban on international anddomestic flights along with a completelockdown, travellers were unable toenter as well as depart the country. Asad and challenging reality is that theTribhuvan International Airport sawlowest passenger traffic since 2003 asan impact of the pandemic in 2020.As per the reports, a breakdown byairlines shows that Nepal Airlineswitnessed a 62.77 percent drop inpassenger numbers last year. Doha-Tribhuvan InternationalAirport saw lowestpassenger traffic since2003 as an impact of thepandemic in 2020.

based Qatar Airways took the second-spot alsowitnessing a 67.32 percent drop in the numbersof passenger’s from 2019. Himalaya Airlines, however, jumped to the third place fromseventh despite recording a 48.95 percent fall inpassenger numbers.Dubai-based low-cost carrier saw its passengercarriage drop by 73.63 percent managingto hold on to fourth position. Air Arabia’spassenger number was down by 70.19 percentand Indigo Air which is India’s low-cost carriersaw its passenger number drop by 70.78percent. India’s flag carrier, Air India saw thestrongest passenger drop which was downby 82.90 percent in 2020. Similarly, ChinaSouthern Airlines incurred a huge drop in thefigure which was by 90 percent. As a result, international, national andinstitutional collaborations become crucial inorder to emerge out of such unprecedentedsituation. Aviation industry can only operateon standards and standard practices thatare to be implemented via joint efforts inorder to deliver safe, secure effective, andconveniently accessible services. Support fromthe government in various form which couldbe subsidies, tax breaks and equity/capitalinjection among other measures as well as asolid and visionary recovery strategy deem tobe essential for the Nepalese aviation sector tosurvive and thrive! The pandemic and its aftermath have clearlyindicated that aviation sector is presentlyexperiencing one of the worst crisis in history.DANFE 13

Typically eaten for breakfast, it is simpleand quick to prepare. It is made up of rice and tinyquantities of fried little anchovies, fried peanuts, cucumber slices, and a boiled or fried egg. This dishcan be served on a plate or wrapped in a banana leaffor take-away. But it is also the sambal, a crimson andthick paste prepared with chilies, onion, ginger, garlic, anchovies, and a few other spices that makes this mealunique. In terms of street food, Malaysia seems to be highlyinfluenced from neighboring Thailand. Apom, steamrice cake, fried banana, and the popular and tastyapam balik, which are pancakes packed with peanuts, may be obtained at little booths that appear severalhours a day in certain spots across the city and aplethora of other delectable alternatives, includingappetizers, many of which are fried. So, while in Malaysia, you can delight yourself eatingout at countless street hawkers and restaurants andenjoy meal after meal and be grateful for the lipsmacking food. Photographed by: Alex AzabacheDELVING INTOMALAYSIABatu CavesLocated in Malaysia’s southernmost state ofPenang, Batu caves are named after LordMurugan, who defeated the demons in Hindumythology. One of the major tourist attractionof the peninsular nation, it is composed of threemajor caves and several smaller ones. One ofthese is the famous Hindu Temple. It is believedthat the structure was built around 400 millionyears ago.The presence of these caves remained unknownfor a long time. It wasn't until the end ofnineteenth century that an American scientistby chance discovered them. A modest altarwas constructed in the vast cave, which waseventually dubbed as the Temple Cave. Eventhough many more religious monuments havebeen added to the cave since its discovery, the100-metre-high cave itself still remains to bemost striking. The Batu Caves are easily reached from KualaLumpur. Just take the Komuter Train to LaluanRoute and hop on a taxi or ride with Malaysia’sversion of Uber. The Cathedral Cave featuresseveral Hindu shrines. Also at the foot of BatuHill are the Art Gallery Cave and the MuseumCave. Many colorful gods portraying Hindumythology may be found in a smaller cave on alower level.16 DANFE

Every year in late January or early February, hundreds of thousands of Hindu devotees visitthe caverns to celebrate the Thaipusam holiday. Many attendees participate in different acts ofdevotion and control over their senses as partof the festival's traditions, such as piercingthe skin, tongue, or cheeks. This is done as apenance and as a mark of devotion to LordMurugan, the Hindu deity. A 140-foot-tall goldmonument of Murugan also sits at the entranceto the cave. The only way to access to Batu Caves used to bea perilous climb up 272 rickety wooden stairs, but they've now been replaced with sturdierconcrete. However, almost 300 stairs must stillbe ascended, the caves' uppermost levels maybe inaccessible to individuals with mobilitydifficulties. Nevertheless, there is still much todo on the ground floor.Photograph by: Laurentiu MorariuPhotograph by: Krishna Moorthy DThe steps are now recognized for their riotousrainbow of diverse colours, making Batu Cavesone of the most colorful tourist sites in the world,in addition to its incredible height. Although thetechnicolor staircases are contentious amongconservators and traditionalists, most visitorslove them.It is said that the caves attract almost 5000tourists every day. If you plan to spend some timeexploring the Batu Caves, don’t forget to carryalong plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen!DANFE 17

Therefore, the ninedays are also known as ‘Nava Ratri’ and peopleworship at different temples of Goddess Durgatill ninth day. The festival ends on full moon nighton 15th day. As such, Dashain is the grandest, longest and most auspicious festival celebratedin Nepal which is also quite similar to ChineseSpring festival. According to another interestingmythological belief, the festival is also celebratedto mark victory of Lord Ram (a major deity inHinduism) over Ravana (a demon king).solar calendar. This year the festival will becelebrated from October 07 to October 20 as perthe English calendar. The first day of the festival, Ghatasthapana iscelebrated by installing a holy vessel (pot/Kalash)for sowing seeds of Jamara (long yellowish sacredgrass). The next important day is seventh dayknown as Fulpati which literally means flowersand leaves. Traditionally, the Brahmin priestsbring royal Kalash, banana stalks, Jamara andsugar cane tied with red clothes to Kathmandufrom Gorkha. Also, a parade is organized onthis day by the Nepal Army which is attended bythe President and other high ranking officials asFulpati arrives Kathmandu. It is also known as KaalRatri (the dark night). The ninth day isknown as Maha Navami which is the dayof Vishwakarma (God of creativity) whenpeople worship their vehicles and machineryitems including household weapons likeknife, axe, khukuri and so on. The mostauspicious day is the tenth day which iscalled Vijaya Dashami when elders of thefamily put tika and Jamara and offer giftsand money as blessings to younger ones.People visit their relatives and get blessingsfrom their elders for 4 more days and thefestival ends on fifteenth day, also known asKojagrat Purnima. It is also believed that onthe 15th night Goddess Laxmi (the goddessof wealth) blesses those who remain awakethe whole night.Apart from the religious and mythologicalbelief, people of Nepal also take Dashain asa time for family reunion and get together. Most offices, schools and institutionsremain closed during this festival andpeople rejoice with their loved ones. Flyingkites, playing cards, shopping for newclothes, playing on swing are some funfilled activities that people do to enjoyamongst themselves. After 15 days long celebration of Dashain, people start getting back to their normallife. The festival is soon followed by anothergrand festival, Tihar.DANFE 27

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS: TIHARTihar, the festival of lights is also one ofthe most celebrated festivals which rankssecond to Dashain. It is remarked as thefestival of lights because people light oillamps, candles and lanterns in their housesand shops throughout the festival and it iscelebrated for 5 days. Tihar is also knownas Deepawali, Yamapanchak or Swanti. Thisfestival honors the Yama (God of death)and is also dedicated for worshippingGoddess Laxmi (Goddess of wealth).Celebrated during Nepali month of Kartik,Tihar falls in between month of Octoberand November as per the solar calendar. It will be celebrated from November 3to November 6 in 2021. Among variouspopular stories about Tihar celebration, the most famous one is related to Yama andhis sister Yamuna who stayed away fromeach other for a long time. Yamuna wantedto meet her brother and so she used varioussources to message him asking to visit her.She sent crow, dog, and cow and at the endshe went herself to see her brother. She,then worshipped him with tika and flowers.28 DANFEWhile doing so, she also made a circle with mustardoil, dubo (a type of green grass) and put Makhmalimala (garland) and asked her brother not to go tillthe oil, dubo and mala dry up. Therefore, sisters aresaid to be worshipping their brothers every yearfollowing this tradition.Another venerated Hindu mythological logic behindthe celebration of Tihar is that Lord Rama alongwith his wife Sita and brother Lakhsman returnedback to his homeland after 14 years of exile. Thevillagers therefore, lit the entire village with brightoil lamps for Rama who had defeated the demonking Ravana before his return. Similarly, Deepawali
