Chapter 1:Program OverviewThe Chief Architect Viewer can be used to view andadd commentary to Chief Architect drawings ineither plan or layout file format, facilitating thecommunication process between designprofessionals and their clients. The Chief ArchitectViewer offers many useful features: Open and explore plan and layout files created byChief Architect software. Modify the display of the plan to see more or lessdetail. Create 3D views of the full model. Add notes to the drawing for review by yourdesign professional. Print from any view. Export views as either picture files or Windowsmetafiles for use in other programs. Chief Architect Viewer X12 Reference ManualStartup OptionsWhen the Chief Architect Viewer opens, theStartup Options dialog displays, allowing youto choose how you want to begin working in theprogram or access useful resources.1 Choose Open Planor Open Layouttoview a plan or layout file. See “Opening a Planor Layout File” on page 18.2 Recent Files lists the full pathnames of themost recently opened files. Click on a name toopen the file.Move your mouse pointer over a name tosee the file’s full pathname.3 A selection of useful online Getting Startedoptions and Resources are available here. Clickon an option to launch your default internet browserto chiefarchitect.com.8The Startup Options dialog can be opened at anytime by selecting File Startup Options. Click Getting Started to visit the Getting Startedpage on our web site with links to a variety ofresources to help you begin using the program. Click Training Videos to access a searchablecollection of videos focused on specific topics.4 When an internet connection is available, theAnnouncements section displays updatedmessages and news from Chief Architect.5 Click My Account to launch your defaultinternet browser to the Log In page on our website.6 Your software version’s Build number displayshere for reference.

The Chief Architect Viewer EnvironmentThe Chief Architect Viewer ctCrosshairLinesEditToolbarStatus BarPointerYou can access Chief Architect Viewer’s features invarious ways using the mouse and keyboard. Contextual menus display with a right-click ofthe mouse. The program’s tools are accessed using themenus and toolbar buttons. Keyboard shortcuts are available for most tools.The Status Bar at the bottom of the screen provides tool descriptions and other informationabout the current task.Using the MouseMost of the program is controlled using the mouse.Objects and most views are created by either clickingthe left mouse button or by dragging the cursor in thedirection of a desired view. The Status Bar at thebottom of the Chief Architect Viewer’s main windowindicates which tool is active.Note: If you are left-handed and have re-programmed your mouse, reverse the instructions forleft and right buttons in this manual.The Right button has several uses.Three Button MiceThe left button is the primary button usedin the Chief Architect Viewer. Unlessspecified otherwise, Chief Architect Viewerdocumentation refers to the left mousebutton.Right-click to select any object. If, for example, theFull Cameratool is active, the left mouse buttononly allows you to click and drag to create 3D viewsor to select camera symbols. You can, however,select other types of objects such as text with theright mouse button.9

Chief Architect Viewer X12 Reference ManualYou can also use the right mouse button to open acontext sensitive menu with additional editingcommands. See “Contextual Menus” on page 12. A four-headed arrow indicates that the selectedobject or edge may be moved in multiple directions.The Middle button can be used to pan inmost view types. To close a tabbed viewwindow, click on its tab using the middlemouse button. You can also program it towork as a double-click. A circular arrow indicates that the selected objectcan be rotated.Resize handles display along the edges of the objectare used to change the size.If your mouse does not have a middle mouse button,in the Mac version of Chief Architect Viewer youcan use the left button and the Command key toachieve the same results.The Mouse Wheel can be used to zoom inand out in most view types. See “ZoomTools” on page 27.3D MiceThe Move handle at the object’s center lets you movethe object. Depending on the type of object(s)selected and how far you are zoomed in or out, theposition of the Move handle may shift so that itremains on-screen.3Dconnexion 's 3D mice can be used to navigate inChief Architect Viewer. For information about navigating in camera views and overviews, see“3Dconnexion 3D Mice” on page 41.Using a TrackpadIn addition to the standard trackpad gestures on yoursystem, in Chief Architect Viewer you can pinch tozoom.The triangular Rotate handle lets you rotate theobject.In macOS , you can Command click to pan.Panning with a trackpad is not supported in theWindows version of the software, however.Touch ScreensStandard one-finger touch screen gestures aresupported in both the Windows and Mac versions ofthe software. In the Windows version, touching witha second finger to cancel an action is also supported,as are two-finger pan and two-finger pinch to zoom.Edit HandlesWhen you select an object, its edit handles display.When you pass the mouse over an edit handle,information about what the handle does displays inthe Status Bar and the pointer changes to show howyou can use that handle. 10A two-headed arrow indicates that the object,corner or edge can be moved in the direction ofthe arrows.You can cancel any edit handle operation before it iscompleted by pressing the Esc key on your keyboardor by pressing any two mouse buttons at the sametime.The edit handles that display depend on the type ofobject selected, the current view, and how far you arezoomed out.Edit handles do not resize as you zoom in or out. Ifyou are zoomed out far enough, some edit handlesmay be hidden so that they do not stack over oneanother. As you zoom in, these handles becomevisible again.CrosshairsCrosshairs help you position the mousepointer relative to objects in a view while

They can be set to display inPlan and Elevation views Select View Crosshairsto toggle crosshairs on or off.View WindowsView windows are sometimes referred to as “thedrawing area” because most of them are windows inwhich you can draw or place architectural and/orCAD objects. There are a number of different typesof view windows in the Chief Architect Viewer: Plan views Camera views and overviews Cross section/elevationView windows can be navigated by panning andzooming. You can also enable scroll bars on theirAlthough only one view window can be active at anygiven time, there is no limit to the number of viewwindows that can be open. View windows can betiled or tabbed, and you can navigate between themin a number of different ways. See “Window andView Tools” on page 25.You can also tear a view window out of the mainprogram window. This creates a second, separateprogram window complete with toolbars and menus.Individual view windows can be torn out andtransferred between program windows.right side and bottom. Select View Scrollbarsto toggle their display. See “View Tools” on page 27.Toolbars and HotkeysThe Chief Architect Viewer installs with a set oftoolbars docked to the top, right side and bottom ofthe program window. Using the toolbar buttons is thefastest, easiest way to access many program features.If a tool is active, a small checkmark will display atthe lower left of its button icon. When you pass thepointer over a toolbar button, a “tool tip” displays thename of the tool and a more detailed descriptiondisplays in the Status Bar at the bottom of theprogram window. When you see one of these tooltips, press the F1 key to get more information aboutthat item. See “Getting Help” on page 15.Click on the arrow to the right of a button to displaya drop-down list of related tools. For example, clickthe arrow to the right of the Full Camerabuttonto display a drop-down list of the other 3D ViewTools.floating. Undocked toolbars can also be movedoutside of the program window.Toolbar locations are saved between programsessions.The Edit ToolbarWhen you select an object, the edit toolbar appears.By default, it is located at the bottom of the programwindow, just above the Status Bar. The buttons onthe edit toolbar can be used to edit the selectedobject(s). Which buttons display depends on the typeof object selected, the current view, and how youselected the object.The edit toolbar buttons are the same as the optionsin the contextual menu when you right-click on anobject. See “Contextual Menus” on page 12.HotkeysYou can, if you wish, move any toolbar to a differentlocation. Toolbars can be docked to any side of theprogram window, or they can be undocked and leftMany commands can be invoked from the keyboard.Press Alt on your keyboard and press the underlinedletter in a menu name to access that menu, as well asitems in the menus and submenus.Other keys or key combinations will invoke a varietyof program commands. Chief Architect Viewer X12 Reference Manualmenu item has a keyboard shortcut, or hotkey,associated with it, that hotkey will display to theright of its name in the menu.MenusThe Chief Architect Viewer uses a standardWindows menu format. The menus are located belowthe title bar in the program window and can be usedto access nearly all tools in the program. Click on amenu name to expand it, then click on a menu item toeither activate that tool or access the item’s submenu.Items with a submenu have an arrow to the right ofthe name.Menu items with an icon to their left have a toolbarbutton associated with them.The menus can be accessed using the keyboard.Press the Alt key once to enable this functionality one letter in each menu will become underlined.Press the key associated with one of these underlinedletters to expand its menu - one letter in each menuitem’s name will be underlined. Press the keyassociated with one of these letters to activate thattool or access the item’s submenu. Press the Esc keyto undo your last selection, or click with the mouse toexit out of this functionality.Many tools in the Chief Architect Viewer also havehotkeys associated with them. If a menu item has ahotkey, it will display to the right of the item’s name.Edit menu items with button iconsto the left and hotkeys to the rightIn the Chief Architect Viewer documentation, menupaths are written in this format: Tools LayoutPage Up Page.Contextual MenusContextual menus are context-sensitive menus thatdisplay tools relevant to a selected object or view. Toopen a contextual menu, right-click on an object, inan empty space in a view window, or in a text field ina dialog box.The options in an object’s contextual menu are usually the same as those on an object’s Edit toolbar. See“The Edit Toolbar” on page 11.DialogsMany functions in the Chief Architect Viewer areaccessed through dialog boxes.Keyboard Navigation A check box can be checked or cleared by pressing the Spacebar or the or - keys, respectively,while it is in focus. Columns of radio buttons can be navigated usingthe Up and Down arrow keys; rows can be navigated using the Left and Right arrows. Select aradio button by pressing the Spacebar while it isin focus. Settings in list boxes can be navigated using theUp and Down arrow keys. When a check box isin focus, it can be checked or cleared by pressingthe Spacebar. Drop-down lists can be browsed using the Up andDown arrow keys. When the mouse pointer isdirectly over the drop-down, the mouse scrollwheel can also be used; on a Mac, the list mustalso be expanded. In Windows only, you canDialog panels and settings can be accessed using themouse. You can also navigate the settings on a givendialog panel using the keyboard. For example:12 Line items in tree lists can be browsed using thearrow keys. Up and Down navigate the list, whileLeft and Right expand and contract categories. Press the Tab key to shift focus from the tree listto the first setting on the selected panel. Press the Tab key to shift focus from one settingto the next, or Shift Tab to go in the reversedirection.

The Status Barpress Tab to select the highlighted item in the listand proceed to the next setting. Settings with spin control arrowscan beadjusted by typing in the text field or using theUp and Down arrow keys. When the mousepointer is directly over the setting, the mousescroll wheel can also be used. Slider barscan be adjusted by typing in thetext field or using the Left and Right arrow keys.When the mouse pointer is directly over the sliderbar, the mouse scroll wheel can also be used. Line items in tables can be group selected usingthe Ctrl or Shift keys, or by pressing Ctrl A. Press Enter on your keyboard to close most dialogs and apply your changes. In the Mac version, Command . closes dialogs.In the Mac version of the software, Dictation issupported in dialogs. Select Edit Start Dictation,then open a dialog. Say the word “Numeral” before anumber to enter it as a numeric value or immediatelyfollow a number with a unit such as “foot” to enter itas a measurement.Specification DialogsEach object that you can draw in the ChiefArchitect Viewer has a unique specificationdialog where you can enter size, style and otherinformation specific to the selected object. To accessit, select the object and click the Open Object editbutton.You can also double-click on an object with theSelect Objectstool active to open itsspecification dialog.Note: Keyboard navigation in dialogs may varysomewhat depending on your computer platform.The Status BarThe Status Bar at the bottom of the main programwindow displays information about the current stateof the program.This information depends on a variety of conditionssuch as the type of object selected, and the currentposition of the pointer. The information may includethe following: The type of object currently selected or the totalnumber of group-selected objects. A description of the edit handle that the pointer isover. A brief description of the toolbar button or menuitem highlighted by the mouse. The name of the active tool, a brief description ofthat tool, and its hotkey, if it has one. The length and/or angle of an object as it is beingdrawn. Basic information about a selected library object,folder, or catalog. The current floor. The layer that the selected object is on. The size of the active window in pixels. A file referenced outside the program, such as animage or texture, is missing.Message BoxesAs you work in the Chief Architect Viewer, theprogram will occasionally prompt you to examineyour settings, alert you if you command it to dosomething that could potentially cause a problem, ornotify you if it encounters a problem that needs yourattention.Situations where such message boxes may displayinclude: Closing a file or view without saving;As with dialog boxes, you can access the options in amessage box using the mouse or navigate them usingthe keyboard.A few messages have a Send Report button. Clickthis button to send details regarding the issue thatprompted the message to Chief Architect via theinternet.13

Chief Architect Viewer X12 Reference ManualSome message boxes include a “Remember mychoice” or a “Do not show this again” checkbox.Check this box to prevent messages of this specifictype from displaying in the future. When this box ischecked, some options in the message box maybecome inactive.To allow all message boxes to display again, selectHelp Reset Message Boxes.Viewing a PlanYou can see a model in a variety of different 2D and3D views. You can display more than one view at atime; and in any view, you can pan or zoom in or out.See “Window and View Tools” on page 25.Floor plan view is a 2D view of the model. Each floordisplays separately; however, you can control whichobjects display at any given time, can easily switchbetween floors, and can also display items on a secondfloor for reference. See “Multiple Floors” on page 23.To open a layout file, select File Open Layout.Browse to a directory and select the layout file toopen. See “Opening a Plan or Layout File” on page18.The current page is indicated at the center of theLayout PageTo navigate between layout pages Click the arrow buttons on either side of the Layout PageYou can create interior and exterior 3D views of amodel from any perspective. As in floor plan view,you can control which objects are visible. See “3DViews” on page 35.All views can be exported as a graphic image. See“To export a picture” on page 63.Layout FilesLayout files are used to produce printed constructiondocuments by displaying multiple views of themodel in combination with a variety of writteninformation on multiple sheets. Only one layout filecan be open at a time. See “Working in MultipleViews” on page 26.buttons.button. Click the Current Page number between thearrows to open the Go To Layout Page dialog.Enter a page number and click OK. Select Page Up or Page Down from the Tools Layout menu. Press Shift N (up one page) or Shift M (downone page) on the keyboard.Tape MeasureUse the Tape Measure tool to draw atemporary dimension line between any twopoints in the drawing area. The tool will placetemporary markers at the start and end points of thedimension line. These points and the line bothdisappear when you release the mouse button.
