Chapter 1:Program OverviewThe Chief Architect Viewer can be used toview and add commentary to Chief Architectdrawings in either plan or layout file format,facilitating the communication processbetween design professionals and theirclients. The Chief Architect Viewer offersmany useful features: Open and explore plan and layout filescreated by Chief Architect software. Modify the display of the plan to seemore or less detail. Create 3D views of the full model. Add notes to the drawing for review byyour design professional. Print from any view. Export views as either picture files orWindows metafiles for use in other programs. The program’s tools are accessed usingthe menus and toolbar buttons. Keyboard shortcuts are available for mosttools. Contextual menus display with a rightclick of the mouse. The Status Bar at the bottom of the screenprovides tool descriptions and otherinformation about the current task.9

Objects and most views are createdby either clicking the left mouse button or bydragging the cursor in the direction of adesired view. The Status Bar at the bottomof the Chief Architect Viewer’s mainwindow indicates which tool is active.Three Button MiceThe left button is the primarybutton used in the Chief ArchitectViewer. Unless specified otherwise,Chief Architect Viewer10documentation refers to the left mousebutton.Note: If you are left-handed and have re-programmed your mouse, reverse the instructions for left and right buttons in this manual.The Right button has several uses.Right-click to select any object. If, forexample, the Full Cameratool is active,the left mouse button only allows you to

You can, however, selectother types of objects such as text with theright mouse button.You can also use the right mouse button toopen a context sensitive menu withadditional editing commands. See“Contextual Menus” on page 14.The Middle button can be used topan in most view types. To close atabbed view window, click on its tabusing the middle mouse button. Youcan also program it to work as a doubleclick.If your mouse does not have a middle mousebutton, in the Mac version of Chief ArchitectViewer you can use the left button and theCommand key to achieve the same results.The Mouse Wheel can be used tozoom in and out in most view types.See “Zoom Tools” on page 38.3D Mice3Dconnexion 's 3D mice can be used to navigate in Chief Architect Viewer. For information about navigating in camera views andoverviews, see “3Dconnexion 3D Mice” onpage 58.Touch ScreensStandard one-finger touch screen gesturesare supported in both the Windows and Macversions of the software. In the Windowsversion, touching with a second finger tocancel an action is also supported, as aretwo-finger pan and two-finger pinch tozoom.Edit HandlesWhen you select an object, its edit handlesdisplay.When you pass the mouse over an edithandle, information about what the handledoes displays in the Status Bar and thepointer changes to show how you can usethat handle. A two-headed arrow indicates that theobject, corner or edge can be moved inthe direction of the arrows. A four-headed arrow indicates that theselected object or edge may be moved inmultiple directions. A circular arrow indicates that theselected object can be rotated.Resize handles display along the edges of theobject are used to change the size.Using a TrackpadIn addition to the standard trackpad gestureson your system, in Chief Architect Vieweryou can pinch to zoom.In macOS , you can Command click topan. Panning is not supported in theWindows version of the software, however.The Move handle at the object’s center letsyou move the object. Depending on the typeof object(s) selected and how far you are11

Chief Architect Viewer X11 Reference Manualzoomed in or out, the position of the Movehandle may shift so that it remains on-screen.key on your keyboard or by pressing any twomouse buttons at the same time.The edit handles that display depend on thetype of object selected, the current view, andhow far you are zoomed out.The triangular Rotate handle lets you rotatethe object.Edit handles do not resize as you zoom in orout. If you are zoomed out far enough, someedit handles may be hidden so that they donot stack over one another. As you zoom in,these handles become visible again.CrosshairsYou can cancel any edit handle operationbefore it is completed by pressing the EscCrosshairs help you position themouse pointer relative to objects in aview while drawing and editing. SelectView Crosshairs to toggle crosshairs on oroff.View WindowsView windows are sometimes referred to as“the drawing area” because most of them arewindows in which you can draw or placearchitectural and/or CAD objects. There area number of different types of view windowsin the Chief Architect Viewer: Plan views Camera views and overviews Cross section/eView windows can be navigated by panningand zooming. You can also enable scroll barson their right side and bottom. Select View Scrollbarsto toggle their display. See“View Tools” on page 38.12Although only one view window can beactive at any given time, there is no limit tothe number of view windows that can beopen. View windows can be tiled or tabbed,and you can navigate between them in anumber of different ways. See “Window andView Tools” on page 35.You can also tear a view window out of themain program window. This creates asecond, separate program window completewith toolbars and menus. Individual viewwindows can be torn out and transferredbetween program windows.

Toolbars and HotkeysToolbars and HotkeysThe Chief Architect Viewer installs with aset of toolbars docked to the top, right sideand bottom of the program window. Usingthe toolbar buttons is the fastest, easiest wayto access many program features. If a tool isactive, a small checkmark will display at thelower left of its button icon. When you passthe pointer over a toolbar button, a “tool tip”displays the name of the tool and a moredetailed description displays in the StatusBar at the bottom of the program window.When you see one of these tool tips, press theF1 key to get more information about thatitem. See “Getting Help” on page 19.Click on the arrow to the right of a button todisplay a drop-down list of related tools. Forexample, click the arrow to the right of theFull Camerabutton to display a dropdown list of the other 3D View Tools.Toolbar locations are saved between programsessions.The Edit ToolbarWhen you select an object, the edit toolbarappears. By default, it is located at thebottom of the program window, just abovethe Status Bar. The buttons on the edittoolbar can be used to edit the selectedobject(s). Which buttons display depends onthe type of object selected, the current view,and how you selected the object.The edit toolbar buttons are the same as theoptions in the contextual menu when youright-click on an object. See “ContextualMenus” on page 14.HotkeysMany commands can be invoked from thekeyboard. Press Alt on your keyboard andpress the underlined letter in a menu name toaccess that menu, as well as items in themenus and submenus.You can, if you wish, move any toolbar to adifferent location. Toolbars can be docked toany side of the program window, or they canbe undocked and left floating. Undockedtoolbars can also be moved outside of theprogram window.Other keys or key combinations will invoke avariety of program commands. If a ChiefArchitect Viewer menu item has a keyboardshortcut, or hotkey, associated with it, thathotkey will display to the right of its name inthe menu.MenusThe Chief Architect Viewer uses a standardWindows menu format. The menus arelocated below the title bar in the programwindow and can be used to access nearly all13

Chief Architect Viewer X11 Reference Manualtools in the program. Click on a menu nameto expand it, then click on a menu item toeither activate that tool or access the item’ssubmenu. Items with a submenu have anarrow to the right of the name.Menu items with an icon to their left have atoolbar button associated with them.Edit menu items with button iconsto the left and hotkeys to the rightIn the Chief Architect Viewerdocumentation, menu paths are written inthis format: Tools Layout Page UpThe menus can be accessed using thekeyboard. Press the Alt key once to enablethis functionality - one letter in each menuwill become underlined. Press the keyassociated with one of these underlinedletters to expand its menu - one letter in eachmenu item’s name will be underlined. Pressthe key associated with one of these letters toactivate that tool or access the item’ssubmenu. Press the Esc key to undo your lastselection, or click with the mouse to exit outof this functionality.Contextual menus are context-sensitivemenus that display tools relevant to aselected object or view. To open a contextualmenu, right-click on an object, in an emptyspace in a view window, or in a text field in adialog box.Many tools in the Chief Architect Vieweralso have hotkeys associated with them. If amenu item has a hotkey, it will display to theright of the item’s name.The options in an object’s contextual menuare usually the same as those on an object’sEdit toolbar. See “The Edit Toolbar” on page13.Page.Contextual MenusDialogsMany functions in the Chief ArchitectViewer are accessed through dialog boxes.Keyboard NavigationDialog panels and settings can be accessedusing the mouse. You can also navigate thesettings on a given dialog panel using thekeyboard. For example: 14Line items in tree lists can be browsedusing the arrow keys. Up and Down navigate the list, while Left and Right expandand contract categories. Press the Tab key to shift focus from thetree list to the first setting on the selectedpanel. Press the Tab key to shift focus from onesetting to the next, or Shift Tab to go inthe reverse direction. A check box can be checked or clearedby pressing the Spacebar or the or keys, respectively, while it is in focus. Columns of radio buttons can be navigated using the Up and Down arrowkeys; rows can be navigated using the

The Status BarLeft and Right arrows. Select a radio button by pressing the Spacebar while it is infocus. Press Enter on your keyboard to closemost dialogs and apply your changes. In the Mac version, Command . closesdialogs.Settings in list boxes can be navigatedusing the Up and Down arrow keys.When a check box is in focus, it can bechecked or cleared by pressing the Spacebar.Note: Keyboard navigation in dialogs mayvary somewhat depending on your computerplatform. Drop-down lists can be browsed usingthe Up and Down arrow keys. When themouse pointer is directly over the dropdown, the mouse scroll wheel can also beused; on a Mac, the list must also beexpanded. In Windows only, you canpress Tab to select the highlighted item inthe list and proceed to the next setting.In the Mac version of the software, Dictationis supported in dialogs. Select Edit StartDictation, then open a dialog. Say the word“Numeral” before a number to enter it as anumeric value or immediately follow anumber with a unit such as “foot” to enter itas a measurement. Settings with spin control arrowscanbe adjusted by typing in the text field orusing the Up and Down arrow keys.When the mouse pointer is directly overthe setting, the mouse scroll wheel canalso be used. Slider barscan be adjusted by typing in the text field or using the Left andRight arrow keys. When the mousepointer is directly over the slider bar, themouse scroll wheel can also be used.Line items in tables can be group selectedusing the Ctrl or Shift keys, or by pressing Ctrl A.Specification DialogsEach object that you can draw in theChief Architect Viewer has a uniquespecification dialog where you can entersize, style and other information specific tothe selected object. To access it, select theobject and click the Open Object editbutton.You can also double-click on an object withthe Select Objectsspecification dialog.tool active to open itsThe Status BarThe Status Bar at the bottom of the mainprogram window displays information aboutthe current state of the program.This information depends on a variety ofconditions such as the type of objectselected, and the current position of thepointer. The information may include thefollowing:15

Chief Architect Viewer X11 Reference Manual The type of object currently selected orthe total number of group-selectedobjects. A description of the edit handle that thepointer is over. A brief description of the toolbar buttonor menu item highlighted by the mouse. The name of the active tool and its hotkey, if it has one. The length and/or angle of an object as itis being drawn. Basic information about a selected libraryobject, folder, or catalog. The current floor. The layer that the selected object is on. The size of the active window in pixels.Message BoxesAs you work in the Chief Architect Viewer,the program will occasionally prompt you toexamine your settings, alert you if youcommand it to do something that couldpotentially cause a problem, or notify you ifit encounters a problem that needs yourattention.Situations where such message boxes maydisplay include: Closing a file or view without saving; A file referenced outside the program,such as an image or texture, is missing.As with dialog boxes, you can access theoptions in a message box using the mouse ornavigate them using the keyboard.A few messages have a Send Report button.Click this button to send details regarding theissue that prompted the message to ChiefArchitect via the internet.Some message boxes include a “Remembermy choice” or a “Do not show this again”checkbox. Check this box to preventmessages of this specific type fromdisplaying in the future. When this box ischecked, some options in the message boxmay become inactive.To allow all message boxes to display again,select Help Reset Message Boxes.Viewing a PlanYou can see a model in a variety of different2D and 3D views. You can display more thanone view at a time; and in any view, you canpan or zoom in or out. See “Window andView Tools” on page 35.16Floor plan view is a 2D view of the model.Each floor displays separately; however, youcan control which objects display at any giventime, can easily switch between floors, andcan also display items on a second floor forreference. See “Multiple Floors” on page 31.

Color Chooser DialogThe current page is indicated at the center ofthe Layout Pagebuttons.To navigate between layout pages Click the arrow buttons on either side ofthe Layout PageYou can create interior and exterior 3D viewsof a model from any perspective. As in floorplan view, you can control which objects arevisible. See “3D Views” on page 49.All views can be exported as a graphicimage. See “To export a picture” on page 87.Layout FilesLayout files are used to produce printedconstruction documents by displayingmultiple views of the model in combinationwith a variety of written information onmultiple sheets. Only one layout file can beopen at a time. See “Working in MultipleViews” on page 36.To open a layout file, select File OpenLayout. Browse to a directory and selectthe layout file to open. See “Opening a Planor Layout File” on page 22.button. Click the Current Page number betweenthe arrows to open the Go To LayoutPage dialog. Enter a page number andclick OK. Select Page Up or Page Down from theTools Layout menu. Press Shift N (up one page) or Shift M (down one page) on the keyboard.Tape MeasureUse the Tape Measure tool to draw atemporary dimension line betweenany two points in the drawing area. The toolwill place temporary markers at the start andend points of the dimension line. Thesepoints and the line both disappear when yourelease the mouse button. If an object islocated by the temporary line, you can snapto it.Color Chooser DialogThe Color Chooser dialog is openedby clicking the Color button in theText Specification dialog or on the Color baron the LINE STYLE and ARROW panels of theLine Specification dialog. See “Text” onpage 75.17

There are a number of ways to selecta color in this dialog.2 Click in any one of the Basic colorsboxes to select it.3 Click anywhere in the color spectrumarea to select a color. The location of a selected color is identified by a black cross hairs and its Hue,Saturation, and RGB values will displaybelow and update as you click.Click anywhere in the vertical bar or dragthe arrow to adjust the selected color’sLuminosity and RGB values.4 Define the selected color by specifyingits Hue, Saturation, and Luminosity(HSL) or its Red, Green, and Blue (RGB)values.5 Click in one of the Custom colorsboxes to either select it as the new coloror to specify it as the box for a new customcolor to be defined.6 Click the Color Chooser Eyedropper,then click anywhere on your monitor toselect the color displaying at that location.Click OK to apply the current selected colorto the Text or Line with Arrow’s line or fillstyle.Online Samples GalleryA collection of plan sets, detail drawings,and renderings is available for viewing anddownload on our web site. Getting HelpGetting HelpThere are many forms of help available in theChief Architect Viewer including: Tool Tips,the Status Bar, and the online Help menu.All these forms of help assume you have abasic working knowledge of your operatingsystem, including how to use a mouse, open,close and save files, copy, paste, and rightclick to access contextual menus. Help alsoassumes you are familiar with basiccomputer terminology.More information is available in the productdocumentation in electronic format and onChief Architect’s official web site, chiefarchitect.com.Tool TipsWhen you move the pointer over a toolbarbutton or menu item, a Tool Tip displays,offering a brief description of the tool. Moreinformation displays in the Status Bar at thebottom of the window.Contextual HelpOnline Help is a searchable menu thatprovides information about all of thetools in the Chief Architect Viewer. SelectHelp Launch Help to open the program’sHelp and explore the table of contents,browse the Index, or Search for keywords.The Help can also be used to provide instantinformation about toolbar buttons, menuitems, and objects in your plan. When you move the cursor over a toolbarbutton or menu item, a brief summary ofthat tool displays in the Status Bar. Pressthe F1 key to open online Help to a pagewith more information about the tool.
