Purpose1.2.To define acceptable standards of professionalism and ethics fordental students including but not limited to ethics, professionalism,and clinical settings for students enrolled in the Doctor of DentalMedicine program in The Dental College of Georgia (DCG).To provide a process for the investigation and disposition of allegedviolations of these standards of conduct.F. all academic and clinical settings associated with the DCG.Matriculation and continued enrollment automatically indicateacceptance of these provisions. Students of The Dental College ofGeorgia are under the jurisdiction of all policies of AugustaUniversity, including the Augusta University Student Code ofConduct for breaches of professionalism and ethics not coveredunder this DCG Student Code of Ethics and Professionalism. If analleged violation falls under the jurisdiction of both The DentalCollege of Georgia and another Augusta University policy, astudent will be subject to the processes and possible sanctionsoutlined in all relevant policies and governing codes, unlessotherwise outlined in the Augusta University policy or procedure.Students facing any allegation that would, if true, constitute aviolation of the Title IX, including but not limited to an allegation ofsexual assault, sexual harassment, creating a hostile environmentbased on sexually offensive actions, domestic violence, or stalking,shall be under the sole and exclusive jurisdiction of the Board ofRegents and Augusta University policies pertaining thereto.Questions on these matters should be directed to the University TitleIX Coordinator.2.This Code of Ethics and Professionalism is informational only and isnot a contract between The Dental College of Georgia at AugustaUniversity (“DCG” or “College”) and any student. The College maychange the Code of Professionalism and Ethics, which merelyfunctions as the current student guidelines, at any time. All studentsaccepted to the DCG will be provided with a copy of this Code ofProfessionalism and Ethics. Prior to matriculation, all acceptedstudents will be required to read and sign a statement certifyingthat they understand they are subject to all of its provisions.(Appendix A)3.The rules, regulations, policies, procedures or other representationsmade herein shall be interpreted and applied by the College topromote the mission of the DCG.4.At all times students are responsible for keeping abreast of the currentversion of this Code of Professionalism and Ethics, which may befound online, and are at all times responsible for complying with itsterms.5.This Code of Professionalism and Ethics should be read inconjunction with other official documents of the DCG and AugustaUniversity (AU).Effective June 5, 2019Supersedes Previous VersionsPage 5 / 47

6.The DCG Student Code of Professionalism and Ethics supersedes allhard copy material or electronic material previously distributed. Themost current version of the DCG Student Code of Professionalismand Ethics can be found in at DCG’s Admissions and StudentServices website under Student Resource labeled “DCG StudentProfessionalism and dmit/documents/codeofconduct2017.pdf).G. Notice Regarding Possible Drug Screenings, Etc.1. It is the policy of the DCG that students are functioning free from theinfluence of illicit or illegal substances. The use of controlled substances(unless prescribed by a clinician), medical marijuana or illegal substancesis prohibited.2. All students are expected to comply with all federal, state, and local laws,rules and regulations concerning drug and alcohol use, including rules,policies and procedures of the University System of Georgia.3. Any student may be subject to a random drug screening for ReasonableSuspicion.a.Reasonable Suspicion is a belief based upon reliable, objectivefacts derived from direct observation of specific physical,behavioral, odorous presence, or performance indicators beingof sufficient import and quantity to lead a reasonable person tosuspect that a student has used or may be impaired by drugs oralcohol.H. Faculty ResponsibilityIt is the ethical responsibility of the Faculty to abide by and promote theprinciples espoused by the DCG Student Code of Ethics andProfessionalism. Faculty should take whatever steps are reasonablynecessary to discourage behavior deemed unprofessional or unethicalaccording to the standards guided by the “Principles of Ethics & Code ofProfessional Conduct” set forth by the American Dental Association (ADA)(https://www.ada.org/ ions%20to%20September%202018.pdf?la en).Faculty should also promote the Faculty Involvement with AcademicTesting Integrity document (Appendix B).I.Student ResponsibilityIt is the ethical responsibility of the student to abide by and promote theprinciples espoused by the DCG Student Code of Professionalism andEthics. to discourage violations of the DCG Student Code of Professionalism andEthics.J.Enforcement and AdministrationResponsibility for the enforcement of the DCG Student Code ofProfessionalism and Ethics lies with the Dean of The Dental College ofGeorgia at Augusta University. Operational responsibility foradministration of the provisions of this Code of Professionalism and Ethicshas been delegated to the Student Affairs Committee of the DCG, a DCGStudent Code of Professionalism and Ethics Administrator Officerdesignated by the Dean, and a Dental College of Georgia Spokespersondesignated by the Dean. The DCG Student Code of Professionalism andEthics Administrator Officer will normally be the Dean for StudentsAffairs or an equivalent student affairs administrator. In cases that areidentified as academic dishonesty, the Administrator Officer will normallybe the Dean for Academic Affairs or an equivalent administrator.II.RESPONSIBILITIESA. Individuals/groups responsible for the DCG Student Code ofProfessionalism and Ethics provisions administration:1. The Student Affairs Committee of The Dental College of Georgia(“Committee”) shall have responsibility for enforcement of this Codeof Professionalism and Ethics, for holding hearings required underthis Code of Ethics and Professionalism, and for evaluating andamending this DCG Student Code of Professionalism and Ethics asspecified in Section X.2. The DCG Student Code of Professionalism and Ethics AdministrativeOfficer, the Dean of Student Affairs or equivalent, shall coordinateadministration of the Code of Professionalism and Ethics as specifiedin the DCG Student Code of Ethics and Professionalism and shallmaintain all official records regarding violations of the DCG StudentCode of Professionalism and Ethics for at least five years after finaldisposition of any hearings or meetings related to these matters.3. The DCG Violation Review Committee will consist of the Dean ofStudent Affairs, the Dean of Academic Affairs, and the Dean ofAdmissions. In the event the incident either involves a member of theViolation Review Committee or involves a clinical situation, the Deanof Clinical Affairs will serve as a substitute member on the ViolationReview Committee. 4. The DCG Spokesperson shall be a faculty member appointed by theDean of the College. The DCG Spokesperson shall be appointed on anannual basis in keeping with the appointment of committees in theCollege. The DCG Spokesperson shall serve as a member of theInvestigating Subcommittee as provided for in Section II.A.4. and shallrepresent the interests of The Dental College of Georgia in all hearingsheld under the provisions of this DCG Student Code of Ethics andProfessionalism.5. The DCG Student Code of Professionalism and Ethics InvestigationSubcommittee (“Investigation Subcommittee”) shall have theresponsibility for thoroughly investigating allegations requiring a‘Formal Resolution’ of this Code of Professionalism and Ethics. AllInvestigation Subcommittee members shall sign a confidentialitystatement prior to any investigation (Appendix C). During theinvestigative phase, Augusta University resources such as, but notlimited to, the Legal Office, Public Safety, and Information Technologymay be used to assist the Investigation Subcommittee. At theconclusion of its investigation, the Investigation Subcommittee willprepare and submit a complete written report to the DCG Student Codeof Professionalism and Ethics Administrative Officer. If a formalHearing is held, the Chair of the Investigation Subcommittee shall readthis report at the Hearing. The Chair of the Investigation Subcommitteewill lead the investigation and involve other InvestigationSubcommittee members as deemed necessary. The DCG Student Codeof Ethics and Professionalism Investigating Subcommittee will consistof the following three members:a.The Vice Chair of The Dental College of Georgia StudentAffairs Committee will serve as Chair of the InvestigatingSubcommittee. In the event that the Vice Chair of the StudentAffairs Committee is the complainant in a case, or otherwiseunable to serve, the DCG Student Code of Professionalismand Ethics Administrative Officer shall appoint anotherfaculty member to serve as Chair of the InvestigationSubcommittee.b.The Dental College of Georgia Spokesperson.c.The Student Affairs Committee student member representingthe class of the alleged violator(s). In the event the StudentAffairs Committee student member representing the class ofthe alleged violator is an alleged violator, the classpresident of the same class as the alleged violator shall serveon the Investigation Subcommittee.Effective June 5, 2019Supersedes Previous VersionsPage 8 / 47

6. The Code of Professionalism and Ethics Hearing Subcommittee(“Hearing Subcommittee”) will conduct all hearings regardingalleged violations of the DCG Student Code of Ethics andProfessionalism. The Hearing Subcommittee will consist of thefollowing seven members:a.The Chair of the DCG Student Affairs Committee will serveas the non-voting Chair of the Hearing Subcommittee. If theChair of the Committee is the complainant in a case, orotherwise unable to serve, the DCG Student Code ofProfessionalism and Ethics Administrative Officer shallappoint another faculty member to chair the HearingSubcommittee.b.The Hearing Subcommittee will consist of three facultymembers with voting rights. These faculty members will beselected as follows. The DCG Student Code ofProfessionalism and Ethics Administrative Officer randomlyselects a faculty from the Student Affairs Committee that hasbeen designated as a Faculty Class Representative for each ofthe three classes not involved in the violation. If any of theFaculty Class Representatives are the complainant in a case, orotherwise unable to serve, the Chair of the Student AffairsCommittee will randomly assign a faculty from theCommittee. In the event of disqualification of a faculty basedupon either the DCG Spokesperson or the alleged violator, andan appropriate replacement from the DCG Committee is notagreed upon by both parties, the Chair of the Student AffairsCommittee will randomly select a faculty member from theentire DCG full-time faculty roster. These faculty membersmust be approved by the alleged violator(s) and the DCGSpokesperson. (See Section IV. D., 4).c.The Hearing Subcommittee will consist of three studentmembers with voting rights. These student members will beselected as follows. The DCG Student Code ofProfessionalism and Ethics Administrative Officer randomlyselects Student Affairs Committee Student Representativesfrom the three classes other than the class of the allegedviolator(s) to serve as voting members of the HearingSubcommittee. In the event that a case involves students frommore than one class, the DCG Student Code ofProfessionalism and Ethics Administrative Officer will appointthe appropriate number of students from eligible classes tohave a total of three students on the Hearing Subcommittee.Effective June 5, 2019Supersedes Previous VersionsPage 9 / 47

d.All voting members of the Hearing Subcommittee will readand sign the "Responsibilities of a Voting Member of theCode of Professionalism and Ethics Hearing Subcommittee"form, Appendix C, prior to the beginning of the Hearing. Thisincludes a statement on confidentiality.B. ConfidentialityAll meetings, investigations, proceedings, and hearings conducted under theprovisions of this Code of Professionalism and Ethics shall be confidential tothe extent allowed by law. The Chair of the Investigation Subcommittee shallinform all members of the Investigation Subcommittee of the confidentialnature of the investigation conducted under this Code of Professionalism andEthics at the beginning of all investigations. The Chair of the HearingSubcommittee shall inform all members of Hearing Subcommittees of theconfidential nature of proceedings conducted under this Code ofProfessionalism and Ethics at the beginning of all hearings.III. PROFESSIONALISM AND ETHICS STANDARDS FORSTUDENTSThe following behaviors constitute violations of this DCG Student Code of Ethics andProfessionalism:A. Definitions:1. inappropriate or abusive comments/behavior: conduct that includes but isnot limited to threats (physical, verbal or written), intimidation, publichumiliation, o r harassment.2. disregard for an individual’s time: improperly scheduling patients(tardiness, double booking)3. patient abandonment: failure to see the patient in a timely manner (withoutdocumentation/explanation)4. professional dishonesty: dishonesty regarding a patient’streatment/falsification of documentation5. Professionalism and Ethics unbecoming : behavior which reflects poorlyon other students, The Dental College of Georgia, Augusta University andthe dental professionB. Professional Misconduct:1. Professional misconduct may occur both within and outside of theclassroom and have broader implications for the well-being of students,Effective June 5, 2019Supersedes Previous VersionsPage 10 / 47

faculty, and staff at the DCG. It is important for students, as dentalprofessionals in training, to understand that while behavior may be legal, itmay not be professional or fitting of the dental profession. Hence, theDean of Student Affairs and the DCG Student Affairs Committee has theinitial and primary responsibility for administering and enforcingprofessional misconduct issues. Professional misconduct may include:a.Any violation of a DCG rule or rule at a professional experience site.b.Violation of Professionalism and Ethics described in course policiesor articulated by the faculty, in writing.c.Violation of any code of ethics of the dental profession.d.Contributing to, or engaging in any activity which disrupts orobstructs the teaching, research, service, or outreach programs of theDCG, on campus or at affiliated training sites. Entering theclassroom or clinical experience habitually late or leaving early,arriving late to a professional activity, without prior permission fromthe faculty. The faculty also has the obligation to notify the class, ifpossible, in advance of any changes in class times, possible latearrival and/or cancelled classes.e.The giving or receiving of assistance not authorized by an instructor,test administrator, or testing agency instructions in the preparation ofany assignment to be submitted for academic credit or forprogression in an academic and professional course of study.Examples of assignments to be submitted for academic credit includebut are not limited to examinations, essays, pre-clinical and clinicallaboratory projects, electronic documents, competencies, andexaminations required for graduation administered by externalagencies.f.The selling, lending, giving (providing in any manner), theft,acquisition by electronic means or otherwise of information ormaterials unauthorized by an instructor.g.The possession of any materials, or the use of any procedures orpractices not authorized by the instructor, course director,department, or testing agency on any examination, essay, report,assignment, graded pre-clinical or clinical laboratory project, orclinical activity to be submitted or being performed for credit orremediation, or which is required for graduation. This does notinclude testing materials issued or examinations administered prior toNovember 1, 2008. It is the responsibility of the course director(supervising faculty) to inform the students of course expectationsand performance standards. Reproduction or attempts to reproduceexamination materials through memorization, recording or othermeans in any fashion, organized or individually, is strictly prohibitedand constitutes a violation of the Code of Professionalism and Ethics.The theft or procurement in any unauthorized manner of anyacademic or clinical materials or academic or clinical propertybelonging to others or to the institution (including, but not limited to,theft or procurement by electronic means).Plagiarism: themes, essays, term papers, tests, electronic documentsand other similar requirements must be the work of the studentsubmitting the work for credit. When direct quotations are used, theymust be indicated as such, and when the ideas of another areincorporated into any work to be submitted for academic credit, theymust be appropriately acknowledged.Approaching faculty, staff, or other students in less than aprofessional manner and treating faculty, staff, peers, and patients ina disrespectful and inconsiderate way (e.g. address a faculty memberwithout appropriate title during professional activity) or failure tointeract with professional staff and peer members of the health careteam in a considerate manner and with a spirit of cooperation.Unprofessional dress (as outlined in the professional program, classand/or clinical agency policies) during classes, clinical experiences,or when representing the DCG (e.g. visiting regional campuses withfellow dental students).Falsifying applications, forms, documents, reports, or records of anykind or providing false information to DCG personnel prior toadmission, or while an active member of DCG’s academic programs.The falsifying, altering, counterfeiting, forging, destroying, orcausing such falsifying, altering, counterfeiting, forging, ordestroying of any Dental College of Georgia record, form, ordocument.Unauthorized accessing or revealing of confidential informationabout faculty, staff, residents or students of the College.Theft, damaging, defacing, or unauthorized use of any academicmaterials and/or property of the College or training sites.Computer usage that violates DCG/AU and/or clinical sitesacceptable use policies.Endangering patients, faculty, staff, and/or fellow students, ordamaging their property. htm tm)Lying with respect to activities covered by the DCG Student DCGStudent Code of Professionalism and Ethics.All laboratory projects whether submitted for credit or otherwisemust be the work of the student unless otherwise specificallyauthorized by the course director.r.Patient care activities by students without The Dental College ofGeorgia faculty supervision are strictly prohibited. For purposesof this section of the DCG Student Code of Professionalism andEthics, patient care activities by students shall include all of thoseactivities which constitute the practice of dentistry in the State ofGeorgia as defined by Section 43-11-17 and Section 43-11-1 (orthe current sections of Georgia law governing the practice ofdentistry) of the Laws Governing the Practice of Dentists andDental Hygienists in Georgia (Appendix D). The followingbehaviors constitute violations of this Code of Professionalism andEthics:i. Patient care activities by students without approval and/orsupervision b y faculty.ii. Patient c a r e a c t i v i t i e s b y students o u t s i d e o fr e g u l a r l y scheduled Dental College of Georgia clinichours including, but not limited to, nights and weekendswithout approval and supervision of faculty.iii. Patient care activities by students at any off campus siteunless such activities and sites are approved of as part of arecognized Dental College of Georgia course.iv. The appointing of any patient of The Dental College ofGeorgia at any off campus site that is not recognized as anextension of The Dental College of Georgia.A violation of this Section constitutes the illegal practice ofdentistry and must be treated as a Formal Hearing (see IV. D.).An alleged violation of this Section cannot be considered as aCitation.s.The illegal practice of dentistry is a violation of Georgia Law, is afelony, and will result in a Formal Hearing (Appendix D). At thediscretion of the Dean, individuals found in violation of this sectionof the Code may be reported to the Georgia Board of Dentistry.The use of pressure, threat, abuse, or similar practices againstany person involved to inhibit or prevent the reporting,investigation, or h

administration of the Code of Professionalism and Ethics as specified in the DCG Student Code of Ethics and Professionalism and shall maintain all official records regarding violations of the DCG Student Code of Professionalism and Ethics for at least five years after final disposition of any hearings or meetings related to these matters. 3.
