Cayman International School Elementary School Handbook 2009/10 School Description History and Governance Cayman International School began as Faulkner Academy with high ideals in October of 1994. The school was purchased by ISS (Cayman) Ltd. in 2002 and the name of the school changed to Cayman International School (CIS) in 2003. The Board of Directors hires a Director to oversee the day-to-day running of the school, create, approve and maintain policy and to see that the school carries out its stated mission and objectives. CIS is a private, college preparatory, nonsectarian, co-educational school for students from two years old through Grade 12. It was established to provide an American/International educational program for the dependents of the multi-national professionals living in Cayman. Accreditation The Middles States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSA), an American accrediting agency, accredits CIS through Grade 12. An IB World School, CIS is authorized to present the Diploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). CIS is registered with the Cayman Islands Ministry of Education, who approves the licenses for schools on the island. CIS works with the Cayman Islands Education Standards and Assessment Unit (ESAU), the Cayman Islands Early Childhood Unit, MSA, and the IBO to maintain high quality, challenging programs for its students. CIS is an invitational member of the Association of American Schools of Central America, Columbia, Caribbean, and Mexico. General Overview The Elementary School at CIS encompasses Kindergarten through Grade 5. The students in these grades are grouped together for academic and social purposes. The goal of the CIS elementary program is to provide students with a sound foundation for future learning. The program focuses on the child as an active learner, with the curriculum designed to cover all the basic skills, as well as to emphasize critical thinking. The ultimate goal of the program is to prepare students to be responsible, productive citizens in a rapidly changing world. Teachers work collaboratively to provide a smooth transition process from the Early Childhood Program to Kindergarten, from one elementary grade level to the next, and from Grade 5 to Middle School. The homeroom teacher is the key contact for parents and thus provides a means of communication between the home and the school. 6

Cayman International School Elementary School Handbook 2009/10 School Hours The CIS Office is open for business from 7:45 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. daily, Monday through Friday, during the regular school year. Cayman International School Elementary School Handbook 2009/10 School Programs After School Activities In addition to the regular daily class schedule, CIS offers an After School Activities Program. A variety of activities are available in which students may choose to participate. Different activity sessions are held during the year. A list of activities are sent home before a new session begins. Students are highly encouraged to participate and to commit to the school activity. Guidance and Counseling The CIS counselor will work with classroom teachers in their work as mentors to students. The counselor is available to provide individual, small group and class counseling sessions for students during the school year. IB and CIS Learner Profile CIS is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School as the Diploma Programme is offered for students in Grades 11 and 12. The IB Learner Profile has been adopted throughout our school. It encourages students to become compassionate and lifelong learners who are inquirers, thinkers, communicators, knowledgeable, risk-takers, principled, caring, open-minded, balanced and reflective. We are preparing our students to become tomorrow’s global leaders. Assessment and Reporting The fundamental purpose of assessment is to collect and analyze data to make decisions about how students are performing. Progress reports are sent home as needed during the year. They must be signed and returned to the homeroom teacher. Report cards are issued four times per year and indicate student achievement for each quarter. Information Technology CIS has a commitment to integrating technology throughout the curriculum. Students have access to a full computer lab, mini-lab, Alpha Smart Dana keyboards, and a Smart Board. Students must sign an “Acceptable Use Policy” to reinforce responsible use of electronic resources. Please refer to the Computer/Internet Acceptable Use Policy in the Appendix. Field Trips Educational day trips are an important part of the school’s program and play an integral role in the intercultural experiences of the students. When a field trip is planned, it is expected that all students will participate. Notice and details of the trip are sent home in advance. There may be nominal costs, such as admission fees, that will be required to participate in the trip. School transportation will be used when possible, with additional transportation provided by parents as necessary. Through their dress and behavior, students should demonstrate respect and sensitivity to the culture and places visited in the community. Elementary Reading Buddies 8

Cayman International School Elementary School Handbook 2009/10 curriculum goals while participating in community service. Students in service-learning experiences make connections between what they are studying in class and real-world issues. Library The CIS Library is open from 7:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday on school days. The library and computer room are designated information centers designed for academic research of printed material, video/ DVD, and online databases. Elementary students visit the library with their classes to develop library and research skills as well as for literature enrichment. They may also visit the library on their own with teacher permission. The number of materials that may be borrowed varies according to the grade level of the student. If any materials are overdue, the student will not be allowed to check out other materials until the overdue materials is returned. The return of materials on time and in good condition is the responsibility of the student. Students will be required to pay for lost or damaged materials. Parents of elementary students are welcome to check out books. As the school continues to grow, it may be necessary in the future to designate specific times when parents can visit the library. Elementary students are required to be under the supervision of a parent/guardian when visiting the library outside of their regular instructional day. Standardized Testing CIS provides for standardized tests to be given to elementary students. The ITBS (Iowa Tests of Basic Skills) are currently given to students in grades 2-5. Parents and students will be informed of the testing dates ahead of time. These are not tests that require advance homework preparation. The tests provide information about student progress in relation to U.S. and international norms. Results of the test are shared with parents when they are received. Test results should be viewed within the context of other feedback such as report cards and assessments in school. Tutoring In some situations, it may be necessary to recommend that a student will benefit from private tutoring outside of the school day to assist with his/her learning needs. The school will assist in trying to locate a tutor, with tutoring expenses paid by the parents. The school campus may not be utilized for outside tutors and/or faculty or staff tutoring privately outside of the instructional day without prior permission from the administration. Parent Conferences Parent-teacher conferences are held after the first and third quarter of the school year. Additional conferences with teachers or the counselor can be scheduled by parents at any time. The appropriate level of communication is always first with the teacher before requesting a meeting with the counselor or administrator. In addition, Progress Reports may be sent home at any time of the year when a teacher feels it necessary to communicate formally with parents. Service Learning Service learning is a teaching and learning approach through which students achieve Spirit Days are held during the year. Kindergarten students enjoyed a “Green Day” on March 17 and went on a leprechaun hunt in their classrooms. 9

Cayman International School Elementary School Handbook 2009/10 Policies and Procedures Arrival and Dismissal Times Each morning, students are asked to enter the campus from the area in front of the Administration Building and walk to the playground area. Grades 3 through 5 classes begin at 8:00 a.m. and are dismissed at 3:00 p.m. Classes for Kindergarten through Grade 2 begin at 8:15 a.m. and are dismissed at 2:15 p.m. Playground supervision is provided from 7:30 a.m. Students should not arrive before the playground is supervised and are expected to leave the campus promptly after dismissal time, unless registered for an after school activity. parents should contact the school office with adequate and advance notice. Students are expected to make up all assignments missed. Assemblies As a community of learners, it is important to bring elementary students and teachers together for celebrations of learning. Assemblies are generally held once a month. The specific date and time of the assembly will be announced in the CIS Friday News Flash. Students who have been absent for all or any part of a day and have not notified the office are required to bring with them, when they return to school, a statement signed by the parent or guardian that specifies the date and/or time of absence and the reason for the absence. This note is to be turned in to the school office. In the event that a student returns to school without a note, the student will have an unexcused absence until a note is brought to school. For extended absences for illness, students should provide a written medical excuse signed by a doctor. A student who has been out sick during the day will not be admitted to any extra curricular event on that same afternoon or evening. Students who miss school for an extended period of time may experience a drop in achievement due to class work missed. Many experiences and discussion in the classrooms cannot be adequately duplicated or made up. Absences are excused only for the following reasons: illness or medical needs, religious observances, school sponsored or approved activities, family emergencies, security/weather concerns. Attendance-Absences and Tardies Absences, for any reason, are disruptive to the educational process and detrimental to a student’s achievement. Research verifies a high correlation between attendance in school and academic success. The school asks parents to ensure that their child attends school regularly and arrives on time. Parents are asked to exercise discretion and avoid absences due to convenience, for travel, for vacations during regularly scheduled school days, or on days adjacent to weekends and school holidays. Extended absences and early leaving for any reason other than illness are strongly discouraged. Tardies: Students are expected to arrive at school on time. A late arriving student may be disruptive to his/her learning in addition to the learning of other students in the class. Absences: Parents should phone the school by 8:30 a.m. if their child will be absent on a given day. If it is necessary for students to miss school for any reason other than illness, 11

Cayman International School Elementary School Handbook 2009/10 Bikes, Scooters, Skateboards, Roller Blades or Shoes with Wheels A student who rides a bicycle to school should check with the Administration about an appropriate place to park the bicycle. Bikes, scooters, skateboards, and roller blades or shoes with wheels are not permitted on the campus before, during, or after school hours due to safety reasons. Communications Class Newsletters: Teachers from Kindergarten to Grade 5 generally have weekly newsletters. All are sent electronically to parents and posted on the website. CIS Newsletter: A school newsletter titled the CIS News Flash is sent electronically each week to parents. It is also posted on the website. Birthdays Birthdays are a special time and we will celebrate them in school. Let your child’s teacher know ahead of time if you would like to bring in a treat to celebrate your child’s birthday. By checking with the teacher several days in advance, he/she will be able to advise you about any special dietary concerns and an appropriate time for the birthday treat. Please do not bring gift bags or gifts for the children in the class. The school will permit a light snack, but candles, matches, gift bags, and the party celebrations should not be the focus in the school setting. Invitations for parties will not be distributed in school unless there is one for each member of the class. Thank you for your support and sensitivity to these issues. Website: The CIS website (www.caymaninternationalschool.org) should be accessed for newsletters and other information about the school and programs. E-mail: Our faculty and staff try to check emails before and after school, but it is not always possible to do this during the school day since they are with children. A CIS Email Etiquette Policy is noted in another section of this handbook. Discipline Plan CIS strives to maintain a safe, positive, consistent environment that fosters student learning and responsible behavior. A discipline situation is regarded as an opportunity for learning, and when a rule has been disregarded, the situation will be discussed with the child. Typical questions might be: Classroom Parties The children will have an opportunity to celebrate specific holidays during the year, as will be noted at the beginning of each school year. Class parties are held at school and are planned and organized by the teacher with the help of a room parent. Parents usually volunteer to help with activities or to donate food or crafts. Generally, this includes Halloween, Christmas (or “Winter” holidays), and an end of the year party. Other celebrations may be integrated with units of study during the year. What did you choose to do? What would have been a better choice? What will you do next time? 12

Cayman International School Elementary School Handbook 2009/10 A child sent to the office may be asked to write an Action Plan. Consequences for misbehavior may result in time out, a missed recess, a phone call to parents, and/or a parent conference. Suspension and expulsion are a last resort but are possible consequences or severe or chronic situations that may jeopardize the safety and learning of others. name is written on the article. Thank you! Lost and Found Items found on the school campus will be turned over to the school’s main office where they can be identified and retrieved. Parents are invited to come in and look through lost and found items. After a period of time, appropriate items remaining in Lost and Found will be given to a local charity. Students are asked to label all of their possessions with their names. Great care should be taken with possessions and respect shown to items belonging to others. Early Departure from School During the school day a student may leave the school campus only by parent request which must be approved by the Administration or designee. A student who leaves campus during the school day must sign out in the office. When he or she returns to school during the day, a stop in the office to sign back in is a necessity. Lost or Damaged School Property Textbooks and many instructional materials are school-provided. Students are responsible for the correct use of these books and materials, as well as library materials and school facilities. Students are reminded to place textbooks, lunch boxes, and other items in their lockers during the day rather than to leave them in the corridor. A replacement cost for lost and/or damaged books, equipment, and facilities will be collected. No report cards or transcripts will be provided until all financial obligations have been met. Food, Drinks and Gum at School Food should not be eaten in the classrooms without prior teacher approval. Gum is not permitted on campus. CIS is a beautiful school with new facilities. Keeping the rooms and campus clean from gum and litter is a responsibility of all members of the community. Homework Homework is assigned from Grades 1-5 so students can expand on the skills and concepts taught in class and gain a more thorough understanding from additional independent study. Students in Grades 1-5 are issued a homework journal. A parent is expected to sign his/her initials when homework has been completed. Should a student lose a homework journal, a replacement fee will be charged. Please refer to the homework policy for additional information. Labeling of Clothing and Items It is good practice to label all items that one wears and brings to school. It is much easier to identify the owner of a lost item when a PTA events are held throughout the year! 13

Cayman International School Elementary School Handbook 2009/10 and to provide the school with an emergency contact. In the event that a student needs urgent medical attention and the school is unable to contact the parents/guardians immediately, the Vice-Principal or Director will arrange for the student to be taken to a doctor or hospital. The school does not retain a school nurse, but does have a visiting nurse. Lunch and Snack There is a catered lunch program contracted by the school. Restaurants and other cater ing services who are not contracted by the school may not sell or distribute food on the school campus. Students may also bring a lunch from home. Due to the increasing enrollment and efforts to consolidate the number of supervised areas, all students are asked to eat in the designated lunch area. During rainy days, students may need to return to their homerooms to eat lunch. Students are asked to be respectful of designated lunch and or snack areas and to keep them free from litter. Students are encouraged to bring a nutritious snack from home for their mid-morning break. There are drinking fountains available at school. Students are encouraged to bring their own water bottles which can be refilled at the fountain. The office must be informed if a child is on medication or has any special health problems that require regular attention. If a parent requires that a student be given medication during the school day, then written permission must be given to the school office and all medication kept in the office. The parent should pick up the medicine at the end of the school day. Students are not allowed to administer medicine on campus. A student should not be sent to school if he/she has: Insurance The school carries a basic legal liability policy. Students are not covered for personal accidents. The school cannot accept liability for students on or off the school premises. Parents are required to take out their own insurance policies. If students are traveling on an extended field trip, parents are expected to make insurance provisions for personal insurance. An earache or severe headache Fever An acute cold Communicable disease Drainage or inflammation of an eye Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea Untreated head lice The parent of a student with a communicable disease must notify the school office. Parent Absences If it is necessary for parents to travel and to leave the student in Grand Cayman, the school office should be informed in writing in advance. The following information should be given: 1. Dates the parents will be gone. 2. Name and phone number of an Englishspeaking adult who is responsible for the student’s welfare in the absence of both parents. 3. Name and phone number of a second contact in case of emergency or illness at school. Medical/Health Concerns The school considers the health and safety of its students to be of prime importance. Accordingly the school maintains a first-aid station in the school’s Reception area to assist students who become ill during the day. If a student becomes ill at school, the secretary or administrator will determine whether the student should remain in school or be sent home. Should the student need to be sent home or for further medical treatment, the parents will be notified. It is important for parents to keep phone contacts current 14

Cayman International School Elementary School Handbook 2009/10 Safety and Security Procedures Parents are always welcome at CIS. With the exception of arrival and dismissal times, we ask that all parents and visitors to the campus sign the security book and wear a visitor’s tag provided for you. Parents are asked to stop in the office and not to go directly to their child’s classroom during the day. If it is necessary to take your child off campus during the day, note that he/she must be signed off campus and this will require a stop in the office. Visitors on the Campus When visiting our campus to volunteer, assist with activities, or other purposes, parents/guardians should stop by the office to check in and pick up a parent visitor’s tag. Should you wish to contact your child during the day, we request that you stop in the office first, rather than to go directly to the classroom, which can be disruptive to classroom instruction. Faculty and staff are encouraged to seek the identity of anyone in the school not recognized and not wearing a visitor’s tag. The school maintains appropriate emergency procedures to ensure speedy evacuation of the premises in the event of fire, earthquake, or lockdown. Regular practice drills are held at intervals during the school year to ensure all studen
