He moves to the podium for Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony, last performed by the TSO to mark the one-year anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

January 13 & 14, 2017 March 17 & 18, 2017 Organ, Orchestra, and Xanadu Heidi Grant Murphy and Mahler Lio Kuokman, conductor Paul Jacobs, organ Stefan Sanderling, conductor Heidi Grant Murphy, soprano Griffes – The Pleasure Dome of Kubla Khan* Daugherty – ORGAN CONCERTO “ONCE UPON A CASTLE”* Bartók – Concerto for Orchestra Wagner – Prelude to Tristan and Isolde Schoenberg – Variations for Orchestra, Op. 31* Mahler – Symphony No. 4 Two artists who made huge impressions in their Toledo debuts return in a program that explores the intersection of symphony and concerto. Paul Jacobs is the featured soloist in Once Upon a Castle, an organ concerto by Ann Arbor-based composer Michael Daugherty that takes inspiration from the Hearst Castle – itself the inspiration for the estate Xanadu in the film “Citizen Kane.” TSO musicians take the spotlight in Bartók’s highly-virtuosic Concerto for Orchestra. February 3 & 4, 2017 West Side Story Giordano Bellincampi, conductor Sarah Chang, violin STRAVINSKY – PULCINELLA SUITE VITALI – CHACONNE* GERSHWIN – AN AMERICAN IN PARIS BERNSTEIN – WEST SIDE STORY SUITE* World-renowned violinist Sarah Chang returns to the Peristyle in a suite from Bernstein’s “West Side Story,” in concert with one of her – and Toledo’s – favorite conductors: Giordano Bellincampi. February 24 & 25, 2017 Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, featuring star soprano Heidi Grant Murphy, is unique among his symphonies – gentle, intimate, transcendent. Stefan Sanderling joins this work with music by Wagner and Schoenberg. April 7 & 8, 2017 Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Alain Trudel, conductor Augustin Hadelich, violin Boulanger, L. – D’un matin de printemps* Dvořák – Violin Concerto* Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 4 Described as a “throwback to a golden age,” violinist Augustin Hadelich brings unique elegance to Dvořák’s underappreciated violin concerto. By contrast, Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony, with its wistful second movement and triumphant finale, has long been an audience favorite. May 5 & 6, 2017 Sanderling: A Perfect Cadence Heavenly Preludes Stefan Sanderling, conductor Martina Filjak, piano Karina Canellakis, conductor Beethoven – Coriolan Overture Mozart – Piano Concerto in C Major K. 415 Brahms – Symphony NO. 3 Berlioz – Overture to Beatrice and Benedict Liszt – Les Préludes Debussy – PrElude TO THE AFTERNOON OF A FAUN Strauss – Death and Transfiguration One of the most dynamic young conductors in the country, Karina Canellakis returns to Toledo with a program of four symphonic showpieces from the 19th and 20th centuries. * TSO premiere Stefan Sanderling concludes his tenure as the Toledo Symphony’s Principal Conductor with works from the heart of the Viennese symphonic tradition. subscribe BY MAY 29 TO GUARANTEE YOUR SEATS AND SAVE M A R TI N A FI L J A K

A TRIBUTE TO THE MUSIC OF THE CARPENTERS From Grammy-nominated musician and producer Jim Brickman comes one of the most anticipated shows of the season. With breathtaking songs that began their life with Karen and Richard Carpenter, “Yesterday Once More” takes audiences back in time, recapturing the music an entire generation fell in love with, and fell in love to.“Yesterday Once More” is enhanced with behind-the-scenes stories of pop culture of the 1970s, along with lush arrangements by Jim Brickman of songs like “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Rainy Days and Mondays,” and “Close To You!” MARCH 11, 2017 Pat Benatar & Neil Giraldo Theirs is a rock ‘n’ roll love affair: fourtime Grammy winner Pat Benatar, acknowledged as the leading female rock vocalist of the 1980s, and Neil Giraldo, a musician, producer, arranger, and songwriter, are a husband-wife team that remains an entertainment powerhouse that, for more than three decades, continues to thrill music lovers.
