Modern pain treatments are effective By Piper Glen’s Dr. Ammar Alamarie, Southern Pain & Spine Specialists “Spine, knee and complex pain syndromes are some of the most common problems that come into our practice,” says Dr. Ammar Alamarie. The Piper Glen resident shared with us how untreated pain can affect every aspect of a person’s life. Consider how you feel when you first awake in the morning. As you rise from your bed, you feel a twinge in your lower back. Or you realize that same knee is aching and your day is just beginning. Maybe it’s a migraine headache. The entire day gets off to a bad start and may not get any better. You long for hours to be able to go right back to bed and try to sleep, maybe finding a brief respite from the same pain that will greet you when the alarm goes off. Most people suffering from physical pain will go the route of, first, visiting their family doctor. He may prescribe certain generic pain drugs. Yet, often those do not work. So the patient takes the next step of visiting an orthopedist. Or a chiropractor. Or a holistic practitioner. Or the person their relative recommends to them. Any of these may be just what is needed. Of course, working through all those appointments can take weeks and weeks. And what about the times when all the normal paths lead to no actual healing of the pain on a long term basis? Once the patient visits an actual pain specialist, they often wonder why they didn’t begin there in the first place. “Other common pain problems we see with our patients include trigger finger complex with people who regularly enjoying the firing range. Or tennis elbow among the many players living in the region. People need to understand that tingling in arm or neck, with or without pain, can be a warning sign of something serious. Our nervous system controls every single function of our body. It’s probably the most important system inside us and we need to keep it healthy,” said Dr. Alamarie. “There have been great strides in the area of regenerative medicine as well, such as platelet rich plasma. This is still new to most people but we’ve seen wonderful results using it, especially where the cartilage in a joint has worn away. There are also the modern MLS laser treatments (class IV laser) and spinal cord stimulation that can greatly help tendon and nerve pain,” he explained. meet with multiple agencies in New York and Los Angeles and eventually signed with an agent in LA. Our family agreed to spend three months in LA for pilot season when the majority of the auditions took place. Shortly after we arrived, Tammy had assembled a team to help us manage the Hollywood jungle and we had an agent, manager, and acting coach immersing the kids in workshops and classes. That eventually paid off and the kids started booking roles. Soon, Olivia landed a Netflix series and Chandler was getting offers. So we decided to take the leap and move to Burbank, CA, to let the kids chase their dreams. We sold our house in Piper Glen, loaded up the wagon, and headed west. Tell us about both children. What roles did they get in what films that we might have seen or heard about? Olivia landed the first major part in the Netflix series You, season 2. She played the younger version of the female lead who was a bit psychotic as a young girl. I won’t spoil the show for anyone who hasn’t seen it, but she was able to show her acting ability in a variety of ways. After that, she landed a main role in a short film coming out called Healer. She did a few commercials as well. His family was moving to Los Angeles so that their children could pursue acting careers. Matt and Tammy with their children, Olivia and Chandler, loved Piper Glen and this surely was a BIG step. So we wished them the best and said goodbye. Move ahead to a few weeks ago. I was driving through the neighborhood hoping to spot folks out with their pets. So I stopped in front of a home where I saw a man playing with a colorful Goldendoodle. I asked to get a photo of his fine pet and was surprised to realize that it was Matt! So I asked, “What happened in Hollywood? Are you living here again?” As he filled me in, I knew this was a really terrific story that everyone needed to hear. So here’s my fascinating interview with Matt DeBoer. 14 Piper Glen Living September 2021 Almost three years ago, your family left Piper Glen to move to Los Angeles. What was that about? It all started when we went over spring break one year to visit Hollywood. Our children, Olivia and Chandler, wanted to see a live taping of a show and we ended up seated behind the winners on America’s Funniest Home Videos. So we were on TV most of that episode. The following day we were walking down Hollywood Blvd. The Jimmy Kimmel Show was interviewing kids on the sidewalk and they wanted to interview ours. A couple of days later, we received a phone call that both kids had made the cut and would be on that night. Once our kids saw themselves on TV, they were hooked and wanted to become actors. We agreed to support them if they first tried it locally to see if they really it. Long story short, they auditioned for Talent Inc., a showcase in Orlando, and had the opportunity to perform in front of talent agents from all over the world. In the end, they were invited to Chandler started off with the lead in a USC student film, Cold Embrace, and went on to play the lead in another short film, Piano Lesson. After that, he landed roles on S.W.A.T., PEN 15, a CNN documentary, Shameless, Just My Luck, and he was recently nominated for a young artists Academy Award for his role on Blackish. What brought you back to Piper Glen at this time? When the pandemic hit, Hollywood completely shut down and that is when we had to really decide if that was the place we wanted to be moving forward. While the kids had momentum, it just didn’t feel like the right place for us to raise them. We missed our friends, family, church, and neighborhood and made the difficult decision to pack up and head back. Actually, when we started to look at home prices it was a fairly simple decision since the cost of living is astronomical out there. Plus, Hollywood was changing and studios were no longer requiring actors to be in LA to do in-person auditions. That allowed the kids to continue acting and gave us the ability to move back to Piper Glen. If it hadn’t been for the Nee’s (Julie/Chris), we wouldn’t have found our house in Piper Glen. Houses at the time were flying off the market and Chris drove by and saw a sign going up so he Talented teen actress reached out to us. Our agent, Liza Caminiti, Face-Timed us while walking through the home with Julie Nee. We relied on them to give us an idea of what the home was like. The first time we physically laid eyes on the property was two days before closing, so that was an interesting process. Still, having lived in the neighborhood before, we were excited to be back. What upcoming roles should we watch to see your children in? Olivia has a movie coming out called Healer where she plays another psychotic character that attempts to kill her sister. I like the fact she seems to murder everyone she comes across in her roles – I’m hoping it scares the boys away for a few years. September 2021 Piper Glen Living 15

Chandler has a movie called Balloon that was originally an award-winning film in Germany. He was chosen to provide the English voice-over of the main character. It’s based on a true story about a family that attempts to fly a hot air balloon over the Berlin wall. We also just returned from three months in Toronto filming a movie for Warner Brothers, 8-Bit Christmas. It stars Neil Patrick Harris, Steve Zahn, and June Diane Raphael. Chandler plays one of the main characters. I compare his role to Biff in Back to the Future. He is not in every scene, but you know it is going to be something crazy when he comes on. It’s a hilarious role and he had the time of his life filming it. The story takes place in the ’80s, so I was able to relive some of my youth vicariously through him. It was a fantastic time, and we can’t wait for it to come out this November in theaters and on HBO Max. We understand that you wrote a book about this awesome experience. Want to share a bit about that and how we could get a copy? Originally, I wanted to just journal about a few events as memories for the kids. Then I shared the writing with my wife, my mom, my sister, and the kids and they encouraged me to turn it into a blog. From that point, it took on a life of its own and before you knew it I had a following. At the end of the original three months, I had over 100k words written and decided to turn it into a book. I put together some sample chapters and sent them out to different publishing companies. I eventually landed a deal with Glass Spider Publishing. That is when the real work began. I spent the majority of the three months in Toronto editing the manuscript. We developed a book cover, edited it one more time, and launched it on June 1 of this year under the title, Until Tomorrow Little People. If somehow in our lifetime humans achieve immortality, you may be able to see the brilliant light show that will appear in 4 billion years when our Milky Way Galaxy collides with Andromeda. Those previously dormant supermassive black holes at the center of our galaxies will slam into each other. Stars will be thrown out of their orbits, and the unexpected colliding of galactic hydrogen will start a small explosion of star birth. Now, you can watch the center of the new “Mandromeda” galaxy glow with its tornado of unfortunate matter heading towards the center of the new, even more supermassive black hole.
