185 Canyon Road, Chagrin Falls, OH 44022 May29, 1996 Mrs. Darlene Hunter Assistant Corrections Genealogist N. S.D. A. R. 1776 D Street, Washington D.C. 20006-5392 Dear Mrs. Hunter, Thank you for your 23 May 1996 letter. advising that Thomas Atkinson was credited with Patriotic Service because he paid the supply tax in 1781 in Washington Co., PA. In September 1995 I published our family's genealogy in a book entitled Atkinson Ancestors and Allied Families in which I stated that from a careful study of all known records it was impossible to say for certain that "our" Thomas Atkinson matched up with any National Archives records. of military service for people with names close to the same spelling. /' . For this reason it was reassuring to get your letter confirming that the two "leading candidates" for such a match up were definitely not "our" Thomas. It may be that some of your DAR members would be unhappy with such news, but their acceptance was long ago, apparently before proofs became more stringent. The best evidence I could fmd about Thomas Atkinson's military service was as a part of the Westmoreland Co., PA militia. That seemed both consistent and believable based on his age at the time. His son, also named Thomas, was with the ill-fated Lochry expedition in 1781, but survived that as well as 2 -3 years of indian captivity. H g should be in the DAR's Patriot Index! lam enclosing a promotional sheet describing my book (from the standpoint of potential purchasers with strong Virginia backgrounds). The Atkinson family narrative ( one of 18 separate narratives in the book) is the major family documented and consists of 59 of the 263pp. Obviously, I'd be especially pleased if the DAR Library chose to order a copy. Thank you again for your thoughtfulness in writing to me. ' Robert W. Atkinson

Atkinson 185 Canyon Road Chagren Falls OH 44022 DearMr. Atkinson, While working on a supplemental using Thomas Atkinson as a Patriot Ancestor, I reviewed your letter on the service and birth date of this man.· We agree that the military service with the 1st Virginia State Regiment was not correct. The man with this unit was with Capt. Charles Ewell. Capt. Ewell's Company was raised in Prince William County VA. This Thomas Atkinson (with 1st VA) enlisted March 1, 1777, and served to mid-1780. The man with the 3rd and 7th Virginia Regiment died June 28, 1778. The above two histories were found in the Revolutionary War Service Records available at the National Archives or here on microfilm. We have credited this man with Patriotic Service because he paid the supply tax in 1781 in Amwell Township, Washington Co. PA. (Pennsylvania Archives, Series 3, Volume 22, page 701) We have changed his birth date to circa 1728. Besides Thomas Atkinson on the tax list above are. George Atkinson, Charles Crecraft, William Elliott as payers and a Thomas Atkinson and William Atkinson as single men. We are assuming the older boys were born in the 1750's and thus the circa 1728 birth date. Quite frankly, we don't have any proofthat the. first two children were born 1744 and 1748. Thank you for your interest in correcting our records. Sincerely, (Mrs) Darlene Hunter Assistant Corrections Genealogist
