If they like to sing and dance, then consider a Performing Arts program. If they enjoy reading and writing, then a Communications program would be a great fit. 2. Research all of the magnet themes Wichita Public Schools has to offer by reading through this document or visiting our website at usd259.org/magnet Other options to better understand a particular program include: Visiting our virtual Showcase of Choices and Opportunities on January 7, 2020 Speaking with someone directly in the magnet office Once you have found a program, or even a couple of programs that you think would be a good fit for your student, it is time to start the application process. 3. Complete and submit an application! Applications are web-based and can be found on the magnet website at usd259.org/magnet. The online format is compatible with phones, tablets, and computers. To be considered for selection, it is critical that the application is turned in by the annually specified deadline. 1

N eigh borho od Magnet vs. Pure Magnet WPS categorizes magnet schools into two different categories: Neighborhood and Pure. NEIGHBORHOOD A neighborhood magnet is a magnet school that automatically accepts all students who live within the school’s attendance boundaries. If a student would like to attend a neighborhood magnet, and lives within the boundary, he/she would not even need to apply. Students from outside the attendance boundary can apply to attend the magnet, and will be placed in the lottery, which will fill any vacancies left after all of the neighborhood students are accounted for. PURE A pure magnet has no attendance boundaries. Admission to these schools is purely lottery based and all prospective students must submit an application, regardless of proximity between residence and school. Magnet scho o l faq’s Q: WHAT IS A MAGNET SCHOOL? A: Magnet Schools offer a curriculum designed around a specific theme. From this theme being “screamed” in the halls to being woven into all subjects, students are exposed to these unique concepts throughout all aspects of their academic experience. Q: WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY? A: All students, grades Kindergarten-12, are eligible to apply for magnet schools. Students must be five (5) years old on or before August 31st of any given year to apply for a Kindergarten magnet program. Children attending a Pre-K program at a magnet school are required to submit a magnet application and be lottery selected in order to continue at the magnet school where they are attending Pre-K. Q: WHEN DO I APPLY FOR MAGNET SCHOOLS? A: Applications for the following school year are available the first Monday in October. Applicants who apply by the deadline will be included in the lottery. Late applications will not be included in the lottery. For late applicants, placement may occur as seats are available. Please refer to usd259.org/magnet for current deadlines. Q: HOW DO I APPLY? A: Applications are web-based and can be found on the magnet website at usd259.org/magnet. The online format is compatible with phones, tablets, and computers. If you do not have access to the internet, you can use the computers in the Magnet Office at 903 S Edgemoor. Q: ARE OUT-OF-DISTRICT (NON-RESIDENT) STUDENTS ALLOWED TO ATTEND MAGNET SCHOOLS? A: Out-of-district students are allowed to apply for magnet school programs (BOE Policy - P5506) but will not be offered a placement until all of the Wichita based students who have applied for that particular magnet school have been accepted and there is no longer a pool of applicants. Out-of-district students accepted to a magnet school will be required to provide their own transportation. Out-of-district students must be accepted and attending a magnet school prior to September 20th. NOTE: Out-of-district (non-resident) elementary siblings applying for the magnet school their sibling currently attends are eligible for sibling priority placement. Out of district students who have a parent or legal guardian on staff at a magnet school are eligible for priority placement if space is available. Q: DO PARENTS/LEGAL GUARDIANS RECEIVE PRIORITY PLACEMENT FOR THEIR CHILDREN IF THEY ARE USD 259 STAFF? A: Yes. Students are given priority placement if a parent or legal guardian is employed with Wichita Public Schools. Priority placement does not apply to extended family members, i.e., grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. Q: ARE SIBLINGS GIVEN SPECIAL CONSIDERATION FOR PLACEMENT? A: Siblings are given preferential placement provided their application is received by the deadline and space is available. They must apply as a 1st Choice for the same school that their sibling attends. Siblings who apply after the deadline will be placed on the waiting list, date order received, behind all the on time applications and will not qualify for sibling priority placement. Q: HOW ARE STUDENTS SELECTED FOR MAGNET SCHOOLS? A: After the deadline, the Magnet Office finalizes the processing of all applications that have been submitted on time. Magnet school principals make their request for the number of seats they need filled for their projected July enrollment. A computerized random selection process (lottery) is used to select students from the pool of applicants who applied on time. All those who were not selected are placed in a pool for all schools that they applied for. Q: IS TESTING CONDUCTED FOR ADMISSION TO A MAGNET SCHOOL? A: No. There is no testing done to get into a magnet school. The only method for admission into a magnet school is by magnet application and random selection process conducted by the Magnet Office. The only caveat to this is if a student is applying to get into Horace Mann Dual Language Magnet after kindergarten. Then, a test will be given to ascertain the student’s grasp of Spanish and English in order to make sure they will be successful in that program. 3

a rts Arts magnets offer numerous programs designed to expose students to the fine and performing arts. Students in these schools often incorporate their love of the arts through plays, musicals, dance, and the study of cultural arts. Creating these connections through hands-on, kinesthetic learning, has been found to generate a well-rounded education while giving the students a sense of pride in their work. Fine Arts programs can include visual arts such as drawing, painting, ceramics, and photography while performing arts can include band, orchestra, choir, guitar, dance, and theater. Through our visual and performing arts, our students are free to find and express themselves differently than they would in a traditional school setting. comm unication Communication magnet schools offer students a variety of opportunities to refine their speaking, listening, and writing skills. Our magnet schools in this cluster utilize a variety of formats to incorporate the components of effective communication. Some of our buildings are equipped with state of the art broadcast studios. Communications magnets also use other digital media to communicate via movie making, computer animation, photography, or podcasting. If the digital aspect isn’t your speed, Horace Mann is our Dual Language Magnet, which spans grades from kindergarten to eighth, and completely immerses students in 50/50 Spanish/English instruction, enabling students to read, write, and speak both languages by the end of their time in the program. 7

leaders hip Leadership magnet schools provide students with leadership opportunities in varying capacities. Being able to take initiative, see a project to completion, and be a productive member of the community are critical skills that can’t always be easily acquired in a traditional classroom. Students in Leadership schools may participate in a fundraiser for a local or national charity, work with community leaders on projects that are mutually beneficial to the school and community, or even be part of a specific curriculum that focuses on fostering leadership skills. stem Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) have become highly lucrative skills in the 21st century workforce. STEM magnet schools not only incorporate these concepts throughout their curriculum, but often provide stand-alone opportunities such as a STEM lab, robotics club, coding class, or a myriad of other activities based on real-world technical applications. Students in STEM schools use laptops, Chromebooks, iPads, and other technology to engage in project-based learning, fostering critical 21st century skills such as collaboration, communication, and creativity. TRADITIONA L Our Traditional schools offer a back-to-basics focus on reading, writing, and arithmetic. The common mission for these schools is to prepare students for success in a safe, disciplined, supportive, and challenging environment. Traditional magnets maintain high academic and behavioral expectations in a very structured learning environment. There are four elementary Traditional magnets, with attendance based on address, and one Traditional middle school. 8

The partnership between parents and staff has definitely made excellence in academics a reality at Bostic. What We Offer A traditional magnet program will: Emphasize rigorous academic and behavior expectations Foster ethical, responsible, and caring students Build strong family/school partnerships Points of Pride Citizenship, patriotism, and heritage are stressed. Parents are expected to support their child in a partnership with the school. They are asked to sign a contract detailing this support. Discipline is stressed, self-discipline is preferred. E L E M EN TA RY MAG N E T O PTIO NS BUCKNER PERFORMING ARTS AND SCIENCE MAGNET Who We Are Buckner Performing Arts & Science Magnet Elementary School believes an individual’s abilities are activated and strengthened through involvement in and exposure to the arts and the integration of science disciplines. Buckner provides studentcentered programs that integrate core academics with arts & science integration education. What We Offer When you walk into a classroom at Buckner, you will see students actively engaged in learning - dissecting cow eyes, holding Madagascar Hissing Roaches, building bridges and towers, playing instruments, acting as characters from a story, or having a discussion with an Alaskan Park Ranger about killer whales via IDL technology. DODGE LITERACY MAGNET Literacy is the heart of Dodge Literacy Magnet. Students are taught a love of reading and writing as they explore their full potential in all other curricular areas. Our literacy theme creates an environment where reading and writing are the foundations of lifelong learning. What We Offer In addition to our focus on literacy, our students have clubs once a week and get to choose what club to be involved in. Some of their club choices have included: Drama, Art; Community Service; Character Club and Battle of the Books. Fourth and fifth graders also have the opportunity to join Honor Choir and Guitar Club, which both meet during lunchtime. It is our goal to have well-rounded students at Dodge! Points of Pride Partnership with Watermark Books - they provide wonderful children’s authors Monthly Family Literacy Nights to provide fun activities parents and kids can do together Each month, Pre-K-5th Grade hear our Book of the Month and participate in a writing contest that goes with the text Monthly assemblies to recognize writing, great behavior and positive strides in academics E L E M EN TA RY MAG N E T O PTIO NS Who We Are EARHART ENVIRONMENTAL MAGNET Who We Are Earhart is a neighborhood magnet school that provides a student-centered learning environment and integrates district academic standards with environmental education. Ecosystems including oceans, deserts, and grasslands are taught in great depth to students and are woven into reading, math and writing instruction. Outdoor experiences such as environmental lab studies, field trips, camp days and overnight camping trips enhance the program because the classrooms are “taken outdoors.” Earhart “grows” neat kids! What We Offer Given our unique location in north Wichita and large amount of wooded property, students at Earhart have the opportunity to interact with the environment on a regular basis. Whether it’s through one of our campouts, integration into a regular lesson, team exploration, or something they’re doing in their science class, students at Earhart are continuously exposed to nature. E L E M EN TA RY MAG N E T O PTIO NS ENDERS COMMUNITY SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP MAGNET Who We Are Enders differs from other elementary schools by the extra activities that support our unique philosophy. These include: creating a sense of community, service learning, community service, inquiry learning and projects, and community responsibility. We believe all of these support the development of our future citizens. What We Offer Enders has a student government in which leaders are elected every year into the Enders House of Representatives. These representatives have responsibilities throughout the year and participate in leadership lessons. All students at Enders participate in a grade level community service project, where they learn how to be independent and responsible citizens. Points of Pride Five festivals each year where students have the opportunity to learn in multi-age settings. HYDE LEADERSHIP AND INTERNATIONAL EXPLORATIONS MAGNET Who We Are Hyde strives to create well rounded leaders who have a knowledgeable background of the world. As a “Leader in Me” school, we focus on teaching students the seven habits of great leaders. Our building focuses on creating rigorous academic setting where students learn through the incorporation of the leadership and international studies theme. What We Offer Through Hyde’s Leader in Me curriculum, students focus on the seven habits: being proactive, beginning with the end in mind, putting first things first, thinking win-win, seeking first to understand, then to be understood, synergizing and sharpening the saw. We strive to have our parents, teachers, and community members actively involved in our student’s learning. What We Offer L’Ouverture has a focus on careers and technology that is interwoven with the district-wide curriculum. Each grade level has a particular career theme that they emphasize. Although each grade level has a career theme, we are not tied to only those careers. Teachers work to ensure that the district curriculum is linked to relevant careers. Students are engaged in conversations about different career paths with building staff, community partners, and through Interactive Distance Learning Programs. MCLEAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY MAGNET E L E M EN TA RY MAG N E T O PTIO NS Who We Are McLean Science/Technology Magnet Elementary School is a place where children of all ability levels, regular and special education, are challenged. Our program is especially geared toward children who have a love for science and technology. The McLean faculty believes that children who are most likely to benefit from our discovery approach program are those who are motivated and willingly cooperate, demonstrating initiative for a hands-on approach to learning. Respecting others and following instructions are very important values at McLean Magnet. What We Offer McLean teachers integrate science into all subject areas. Daily lessons are taught in the classrooms and extended during small group sessions in the science lab. Primary students explore science through discovery and hands-on activities. Intermediate students work cooperatively to investigate problems they have identified. Our well-equipped science lab is staffed by a full-time certified science teacher. Nearly all of our most important goals for education – greater reading comprehension, the ability to think critically and solve problems, even higher test scores – are a function of the depth and breadth of our knowledge. What We Offer The Core Knowledge curriculum is not offered as an alternative to the prescribed Wichita Public Schools curriculum, but rather as an addition to it. Students at Minneha receive all the instruction they would receive in any other classroom in the district, but are able to expand on their learning with the integration of Core Knowledge, which is an education reform movement that is inspiring educators across the country to make educational excellence and equity for all children a reality. Who We Are Mueller teaches 21st Century Learning Skills through aerospace and engineering. Mueller focuses on increasing student achievement through the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM). Students learn through project-based learning and inquiry during the module time two times a week. During this time students wear lab coats and complete science modules centered around aerospace, engineering and science themes. What We Offer In addition to a Lego Robotics competition team, a flight simulator, and a strong focus on Aerospace Engineering. Mueller offers the same exploratory options as other schools, such as PE, Art, Music and an addition of Technology. What We Offer Students create themed projects using written and visual modes of communication. RIVERSIDE LEADERSHIP MAGNET E L E M EN TA RY MAG N E T O PTIO NS Who We Are Developing a culture of leadership in our school is about helping children be leaders of their own lives, supporting them as they identify their own unique talents and abilities and encouraging them to make a positive difference in the world. We are instilling in our students by modeling and teaching the universal principles of success by providing opportunities for leadership to our students. What We Offer We use the resources “The Seven Habits of Happy Kids” and “Second Step” to help support our students in learning personal leadership and to build capacity in all of our students to lead in their own lives and affect those around them by making positive choices. We will be emphasizing skills that parents, teachers and business leaders want and that students need to be successful in an ever-changing society.
