Coldwater Lake State Park Update the park. According to the State, the park serves as an important recreational resource for Branch County as it is the only public land open to hunting in the county. In 2015, the PRD approved a 20 year General Management Plan that provides specific guidance on the management of the property. The planning team that prepared the plan also discussed the possibility of expanding the park’s boundary to the west and south and concluded that if any land immediately adjacent to the park becomes available, the DNR will consider purchasing it to expand the park boundary. So, good news! Coldwater Lake residents and boaters will continue to enjoy the beautiful trees and undisturbed shoreline for many years to come. If you’d like to know more about the statewide surplus land auctions, you can visit www.michigan.gov/landforsale. Over the past few years, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has begun selling parcels of surplus public land across the state ranging in size from an acre to 40 acre lots. Land that is offered in the annual auction is typically either isolated from other DNR-managed property or offers limited public recreation benefit. In 2020, 255 parcels were listed for auction in 15 counties, mainly in the central and northern parts of the state. “The nation behaves well if it treats the natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased, and not impaired, in value.” Theodore Roosevelt The Coldwater Lake Association reached out to the DNR in Lansing to find out what the future holds for the state-owned land on Coldwater Lake. Coldwater Lake State Park is 400 acres of largely undeveloped park land with 6,600 feet of lake frontage on the southern shore of the lake. It was purchased by the state in 1988, and has been determined to be a ‘significant’ holding by the Park and Recreation Department (PRD) due to the hunting, undeveloped lakeshore, and wetland habitat offered by 4 CLA Partners with Community Foundation The Community Foundation has been working with Coldwater Lake Association since 2019 processing the 500 CLA memberships and donations. This partnership allows the Community Foundation to provide back office services, allowing the CLA Board Members to do what they do best – help members, protect the water, and enjoy the lake! The Branch County Community Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) dedicated to improving the quality of life in the communities of Branch County and Colon, Michigan. The Community Foundation offers professional services and a place to begin for those who want to work together to create strong, prosperous communities, and understands that the lake and recreational communities are an important economic engine to Branch County. Duane Rufenacht: A Legacy on Coldwater Lake Duane Rufenacht spent 90 years enjoying Coldwater Lake and enjoy it he did. Duane received an early introduction to Coldwater Lake. He was born January 23, 1929 to Frieda and Jake Rufenacht and by the summer of 1930, his parents rented a house on the east side of Coldwater Lake on Crystal Beach. The next year, they rented a cottage on Pearl Beach. Soon, Frieda’s sister Virgie Short, husband John, and son, Dean joined the group. After a few years, they all rented a house further north on Pearl Beach owned by the Jackson family. Within a few years, the families grew to include four Rufenachts and six Shorts. Around 1945, the two families together bought a lot on Pearl Beach for the princely sum of 500. After clearing the lot and hauling in gravel they purchased a basic log home kit. The home was completed in 1946 with the interior designed by Frieda. Thus began an era of many weekends at the Lake swimming and fishing. Not long after Duane bought a boat. He recounted many times the fact that he bought a boat before a car. He traded boats and motors many times working his way to a 1949 25 hp Mercury on a Wolverine Wagemaker that gave him, what he believed, was the fastest boat on the lake at the time. He also took up waterskiing and taught many people to ski. On one particular day, Duane wanted to ski, but his friend Morris was not interested in learning to drive the boat. ColdwaterLakeAssociation.com In an effort to force the issue, Duane started the boat and jumped out but the plan went awry when Morris followed him out of the boat. The two lads let the boat go in circles until it ran out of gas. His boat also played a key role in finding the least amount of time it would take to get from the north end of Marble Lake to Pearl Beach. Another tradition evolved from Duane, his brother Roger, and his cousins going to the Indy 500. They rented scaffolding and erected it at the racetrack to better watch the action. This led to the idea of putting scaffolding out into the lake on the edge of the drop-off, attaching a diving board and having a high dive. This continued for many years until the scaffolding was destroyed in the Palm Sunday tornado. Later, when Duane was in the Navy, he signed up for electronics school, at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Chicago, not because he was interested in electronics but because he would be close enough to come to the Lake on weekend leave. Duane married Vera Odum on September 13, 1959 and they began making their own family memories which eventually included four boys. This time included some more boats including a Catyak sailboat and a Hobie Cat 16 sailboat as his sons became involved in the Coldwater Lake Sailing Club. Later, the sons became involved in the Coldwater Lake Ski Bees and competition waterskiing and the family purchased an early Mastercraft skiboat. In 1984, Duane and Vera bought the Short family half portion. In 1986, Duane and Vera bought a year-around home on Tompkins Drive in Maple Knoll and sold the cottage to their sons, Joel and Peter. As time went on, Duane and Vera fished more, including ice fishing and snowmobiling. Duane last waterskied in 1998. Since then, he spent a lot of time fishing and boating with the grandchildren. Vera died in March 11, 2020 and Duane died in June 10, 2020. He was active to the end, taking a pontoon ride three weeks before he died and ordering trees be trimmed back so he could enjoy the view until the very end. Thank you to those who made memorial donations to the lake association in honor of Duane and the Rufenacht Family. A memorial donation is a great way to honor the legacy of those who are no longer with us. 5

Coldwater Lake Association helps Lakeland Fire Department Purchases New Truck The highpoint of 2020 for the Lakeland Fire Department was the purchase of a new rescue truck. The old rescue truck was a 1990 International with an ambulance style body that was bought used 15 years ago. The truck suited their needs at the time but as time passed, they slowly outgrew it. With years of planning, the department teamed up with Spencer Manufacturing of South Haven, Michigan to help design and build the truck. The department stayed with an International Chassis but went with a new design for the body. Spencer Manufacturing specializes in custom fabrication of fire apparatus and suggested making the body out of polypropylene, which is a strong plastic. The choice was made to go this route to avoid corrosion and rust. A good reason for going this route is that it has a lifetime warranty and was built in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. 6 Every compartment was strategically laid out for every piece of equipment we have. We were able to incorporate a permanent spot for our ice rescue sled which was not permanently on the old rescue. With the design finalized, it was just short of a year before the truck was built and delivered to the department. There are many new features that were incorporated into the new truck. One of the main features is a light tower that is located on top of the rescue body. The tower extends 6 feet high and turns 360 degrees with 64,000 lumens of LED lights. Every light on the truck is LED except for the headlights, which was not available. The body was designed with room for everything to have its own spot, so equipment is not stacked on top of each other. With donation money from the Coldwater Lake Association, we were able to buy two tool carousels to mount our Hurst Jaws of Life tools on. There are also many other items on the rescue that were purchased from the Lake Association money.

Did you know? With over 16,000 in donations in 2020, The Coldwater Lake Association is the Lakeland Fire Department’s biggest contributor—by far, The Lakeland Fire Department is one of the only privately owned fire departments in the state of Michigan. Our only source of income is from the contracts we have with Ovid and Kinderhook townships. Since they own themselves, they are not able to ask for millages to help fund the department. The money used to purchase the new truck came from years of budgeting and saving. The department is so grateful to the community and the Coldwater Lake Association for the generous donations which help fund and purchase new equipment for them “A great big thank you from the bottom of our hearts to the Coldwater Lake Association donors. It chokes me up just thinking about how generously you support us to ensure the safety of our community.” David Smith, Fire Chief To outfit one firefighter with gear costs 5,000 which does not include the air pack costing close to 10,000. 2020 by the Numbers 231 first responder and fire calls 3/4 of those were first responder 1 water rescue 5 house fires 4 barn fires The Lakeland Fire Department is very fortunate to have generous donors in the community. Michigan Gas Utilities has donated over 2,500 this year. The money was used to purchase two gas meters that detect propane and natural gas as well as four carbon monoxide detectors. A very generous couple from Ovid Township donated their stimulus money in the amount of 2,400. The money was used to purchase ice rescue equipment. Some of the equipment purchased was rope, two ice rescue suits and two safety helmets for the suits. Walter Otis is a retired farmer who lives in Ovid Township. Walter made a donation of 10,000 to be used for a grain bin rescue class. There are many other local lake associations that contribute to the fire department as well.
