FOUNDATION UPDATE Foundation Updates & News Greetings, Alumni! The 2013-2014 school year is nearing a close; it’s been an exciting time for the D219 Education Foundation. This year marked the fourth annual Pizza Wars fundraiser. It was held in the Main Gym at Niles West High School, and the additional space allowed us to make room for more tables, entertainment, and fun. The mayors of Niles Township agreed to our pizza-eating contest. It was a tie between Mayor Dan DiMaria of Morton Grove and Mayor George Van Dusen of Skokie. Thanks also to Mayor Jerry Turry of Lincolwood and Mayor Andrew Przybylo of Niles. This year’s fundraiser brought in 8,000 to benefit D219 students in need. See page 3 for details. This spring semester, we were able to provide funding to students for the annual one-day trip to visit area universities - covering their expenses for transportation, a tour and lunch. See Page 3 for more. Additionally, we were able to grant student requests for music instruction assistance, a healthcare course at a local college, a foreign language club trip, several debate institute programs at universities, a 3-day summer workshop to help incoming seniors with various aspects of the college application process, and more. Thanks to an annual grant from the Niles Township Government, we have purchased more than 5,000 worth of breakfast bars for the Student Services Departments at our schools to help fight hunger before the school day. Beyond our yearly efforts, many foundation members spent time meeting with alumni at local and community events. Our members had an active presence at Skokie & Morton Grove’s 4th of July Parades, Skokie’s Backlot Bash, and at various reunions. 2 2014 Foundation Scholarship Recipients Thank you to FEAR CITY, for its creative approach to fundraising. Proceeds from several Haunted House Happenings during the month of October at “Chicago’s Scariest Haunted House” were donated to the Foundation. There was even a D219 room in which zombies wore Niles North and Niles West uniforms. In the photo, Chuck Grendys, Jim Lichon and Mark Matz present a check for 2,467 to director Alyse Burman. As always, it is with great pride that we can offer to assist District 219 students. We continue to provide students in need with graphing calculators, computers, and assist with AP test fees and other grants. It is gratifying to help make a difference in the lives of our students. It is my pleasure to invite you to our public meetings, which generally take place at 7 p.m. on the 2nd Tuesday of every month. We are always looking for people who would like to contribute to the rich tradition of D219, so that new generations of students can reap the benefits that helped us get to where we are today. If you would like to support our work by making a donation to help students in need, please call 847-626-3957 or visit http://www.219foundation.org. Thanks for your support! Niles West to Unveil Athletic Hall of Fame on September 12 Niles West High School will induct the first honorees into its Athletic Hall of Fame on September 12. After years of planning, the school will dedicate a permanent section of the main athletics hall to honor the school’s most distinguished athletes, coaches and teams. In addition to the Hall of Fame members, the display will also recognize athletes who are named to the Central Suburban League’s All-Conference teams. The first-ever inductees will include several of West’s coaches who were instrumental in establishing the school’s proud history of athletic excellence, several of its most accomplished athletes and one of its bestperforming teams. The ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. The honorees will also be recognized during the halftime ceremony of that evening’s Homecoming Game, when the Wolves will play Maine East. Thank you for your support. All gifts are tax-deductible, as allowed by the law. The District 219 Education Foundation for Excellence is a 501(c)(3) organization. Four years ago, the foundation brought together dueling pizzerias to determine the best pizza in Niles Township. Pizza Wars has since become one of the foundation’s most highly anticipated fundraisers. Pizza Wars 4 crowned Village Inn Pizzeria as the winner for the second year in a row. More than 800 people attended the event which raised 8,000 to support D219 students. This family-friendly event was held in the Niles West Contest Gym. New this year was a pizza-eating showdown between the mayors of Skokie, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove and Niles. Mayor George Van Dusen of Skokie and Mayor Dan DiMaria of Morton Grove were declared co-winners of this first, and hopefully, annual occurrence. Thanks to Mayor Jerry Turry of Lincolnwood and Mayor Andrew Przybylo of Niles for their valiant efforts. Watch the video at d219foundation.org. Foundation Supports “First-Gen” Student College Trip In February, 100 students and their chaperones boarded buses to Elmhurst College and Northern Illinois University. Most of these students are “first generation,” those who are the first in their family to attend college. At Elmhurst College, students attended an admissions presentation, toured the campus, met with multicultural student leaders at the school, and enjoyed lunch. The buses then traveled on to NIU, where students had a campus tour and an admissions presentation with a student panel. Niles North and Niles West students enjoyed the trip and had a valuable experience that will assist them with their college search. “My thanks to the guidance teams at both schools.and especially to the D219 Foundation for its financial support, which provided the coach buses and the lunch at Elmhurst College,” said Jerry Pope, National College Adviser at D219. Pope, who has been on all of the bus trips said, “I can’t emphasize enough that the support from the District 219 Education Foundation is making a difference in the lives of our students.” 3 District 219 Education Foundation www.219foundation.org Spring 2014 3
