Learning ThroughHoliday TraditionsRIENAMANDA O’BSr. AVP of Corporate andManaged Center OperationsThe holiday season is upon us and most of us have some sort of traditions for differentoccasions each year. Traditions link us into our family trees, and bond us with the families thatare still being created. They can be as simple as going shopping the day after Thanksgiving todecorating the tree while The Polar Express is on with hot cocoa and bagels to elaborate familygatherings that include a 5-course meal. Traditions are always evolving and adapting as familydynamics change. The best part about traditions is there are no rules and they are unique to yourown family so even if you don’t have any now, you can start them at any time! Here are some fun ideas you canstart this year with your little onesthat also incorporate learning:1. A holiday countdown that reinforceslearning the days of the week, how to countbackwards and be patient.2. Having a holiday cookie baking nightteaches our little ones how to followinstructions, measurements, simple mathand teamwork.3. Acts of Kindness reinforce philanthropy andbeing a kind, good citizen. The holidays area great time to teach selflessness.4. Read a seasonal book like Frosty TheSnowman. As your little ones learn to readthey can help read and act out the book.5. Play the “Grateful Game” by creating ahomemade book which is passed aroundfor everyone to fill in. The kiddos will needsome help with this. This teaches childrenthe concept of gratitude. What are some of your favoritefavoriteure to shareholiday traditions? Ways to Nurture PhilanthropyLessons at HomeIt’s never too early for children to learn lessons aboutsharing and giving, a belief we hold strongly to at TheLearning Experience . In today’s fast-paced, mediadriven world, it can be overwhelming to pinpoint where tostart or how to extend philanthropic lessons beyond theclassroom and into the home. However, with a few simpleideas, it can be an enjoyable experience for the entirefamily.Get Everyone Involved.A simple way to reinforce charitable values at home isto have frequent discussions about giving back as afamily. Share with each other what you are grateful for,and explain that not everyone has the ability to enjoyall of those things. Find out what each family memberis passionate about, do research together on which charities fit best with those passions, and work together to createawareness and give to those causes. Also, encourage everyone – even extended family – to give in some way, whether inthe form of volunteering time and effort or monetary donations.Make It Fun!Get creative in developing philanthropic activities beyond the classroom, especially through kid-friendly activities. Trydecorating a donation box or jar with your child at home, and encourage everyone to give a little every day. No amount is toosmall. Also, if you decide to participate in a charity event as a family, make t-shirts as a group to show that you all are a teamin support of a great cause.Shop with a Conscience.Families shop for food and clothing the most. During each grocery store trip, consider allowing your child to pick out fivenon-perishable food items, and at the end of each month, make a trip to the homeless shelter to make a donation. Anotherway to “shop with a conscience” is to swap one lightly worn item out of each family member’s closet for every new item theypurchase while shopping. Since children grow out of their clothes at such a rapid pace, make it a once a season event toclear out their drawers with them, and take gently used clothing to a local organization that provides to those in need suchas Goodwill or The Salvation Army.Remember, one of the most important philanthropic lessons you can teach at home is:It doesn’t matter howPage 20BUBBLES’ BUGLEBIG or small you are, it’s the size of your HEART that matters.Fall/Winter 2015
