BIO 150 LAB SYLLABUS 8-Week BIO 150 – FALL 2017 4-Credit Introductory Microbiology COURSE INFORMATION Laboratory: BIO 150 – 1A1A Location: AA 0493 INSTRUCTOR INFORMATION Instructor: Dr. Ireen Cleaton-Jones icleatonjones@nvcc.edu ATTENDANCE Regular attendance to all labs and full participation in each lab are mandatory requirements to pass. Please be on time. Students arriving more than 10 minutes late will not be permitted in the laboratory. Attendance will be recorded each lab period. You are responsible for knowing any material covered in the lab whether you were in attendance or not. Only one laboratory session may be missed without a grade penalty. Any additional absences should be discussed with the instructor to determine acceptability. Additional unexcused absences will result in a 5% grade reduction (per missed lab) on the corresponding lab quiz, report, or bacterial unknown summary. If the college is unexpectedly closed for any reason and is then scheduled to reopen at a time when at least 45 minutes of class time remain, you are expected to attend class. MATERIALS Microbiology Laboratory By McGraw-Hill Education: Edition [Customized for Northern Virginia Community College – Alexandria] (lab) ISBN: 9781307043822 – BOOKSTORE Microbiology: An Introduction by Tortora, Funke, and Case, 12th Edition (lecture) ISBN: 9780321733603 – BOOKSTORE To access the Alexandria Campus Bookstore, please refer to the following link: http://www.nvcc.edu/bookstore/ You are required to furnish yourself with all materials necessary for the completion of the lab material. These items include, but are not limited to the following: lab manual, recommended material, goggles (chemical and impact resistant)*, gloves (non-latex)*, hand soap*, permanent marker*, and microscope slides*. *These items are required for the laboratory. Goggles (chemical and impact resistant), gloves (non-latex), and microscope slides can be purchased in the bookstore. COMMUNICATION Each student is expected to immediately activate his/her official NOVA email account if he/she hasn’t done so already. Students must use their NOVA email account, not their personal email account, when communicating with instructors and college personnel. Please refer to the following link for more information: . BLACKBOARD and READING ASSIGNMENTS Lecture notes, class assignments and important announcements will be available on Blackboard (Bb). It is the student’s responsibility to check the Bb course site on a regular basis and print out applicable handouts. These documents are beneficial and should be brought to class. Please refer to the following link for more information: .html. CLOSINGS AND EMERGENCIES Closings and emergencies will be announced on NOVA’s homepage. You can also receive notification by cell phone or email if you register for NOVA Alert at https://www.getrave.com/login/nvcc/. Students should also

review the college policies regarding emergency closings and late openings at http://www.nvcc.edu/emergency/closing/index.html. If a lab is canceled due to inclement weather or an unforeseen emergency, students should check the Bb course site as soon as possible for important announcements, instructions, and assignments. LAB EVALUATION The laboratory grade is 30% of the course grade. Lab quizzes, reports, a bacterial unknown report, and student presentation and report are used to evaluate your progress. A passing grade ( 60) must be received in the laboratory in order to pass the course. Grading (Lab): Best 7 lab evaluations 140 points Unknown bacteria lab preliminary report 20 points Unknown bacteria lab final report 20 points The Enterobacteriaceae lab report 20 points Student Power Point Presentations 40 points 240 points (30% of Course Grade) Issues pertaining to grades and academic performance will not be discussed via telephone or email. For the student’s privacy, these matters will be discussed in person. LAB GRADING SCALE A 90%-100% B 80% - 89.9% C 70% - 79.9% D 60% - 69.9% F 59% and below LAB EVALUATIONS (QUIZZES / REPORTS) Seven best evaluations will be given throughout the session and will total 140 points. Each evaluation will be worth 20 points and may be a quiz, report, or combination of both. Your lowest evaluation score will be dropped at the end of the session. Make-up quizzes or reports will only be permitted if the student attended the lab and performed the scheduled lab exercise(s) associated with that evaluation. During lab quizzes, all electronic devices should be turned off and put away. If the college is closed on the day a quiz or report is scheduled or due, the evaluation will be given or turned in during the next lab period. LAB ASSIGNMENTS More details will be provided later. BACTERIAL UNKNOWN IDENTIFICATION Each student is expected to identify a bacterial unknown and submit a typed preliminary report worth 20 points and final report worth 20 points for a total of 40 points. More detailed information regarding the procedure and summary will be provided at a later date. GROUP PRESENTATIONS Page 2

During semester, groups with 1-2 students each group will be expected to give one Power Point presentation regarding a specific microbial disease. Student presentations will total 40 points and will take place during the two laboratory periods Dec 3 and Dec 8. The PP presentation includes the following subtopics: 1. Name of students and the specific disease topic/you tube link to the disease (no point for this slide) 2. Characteristics of the microorganism 3. Name all diseases caused by that microorganism and a specific disease to be presented. 4. Pathogenesis 5. Symptoms of the specific disease 6. Diagnosis 7. Treatment 8. Transmission 9. Prevention 10. Epidemiology 11. Summary of the research article and the link to the paper. 1-3 slides are required for each subtopic. Presentation time: 12-15 minutes. Reference/citation is mandatory for each subtopic. You add reference in the NOTES section for each subtopic. Points will be taken off if there are no references. Figures, pictures and videos are strongly recommended for grading. Format of the presentation: The content of the presentation should be in bullet points. No narrative is allowed for PP presentation. Each subtopic is worth 4 points. The 4 points are based on the content, reference, figures/pictures, and the student presentation for each slide ACADEMIC INTEGRITY NOVA does not tolerate academic dishonesty. As outlined in The Student Handbook, academic dishonesty pertains to several things including cheating* on an exam or quiz and plagiarism**. Students who are not honest in their academic work will be subjected to disciplinary action along with an appropriate grade penalty. Procedures regarding disciplinary measures and appeals are outlined in the NOVA Student Handbook at http://www.nvcc.edu/students/handbook/index.html. *Cheating involves giving or receiving information that was to be done individually. Any student caught cheating or collaborating with another student on an exam, quiz, activity or assigned report will receive a “0”. A second offense will result in automatic failure of the course. **Plagiarism involves the use of a person’s work, ideas, opinions, or exact words without giving that person credit. Students caught plagiarizing will be subjected to disciplinary action. Please refer to the NOVA Student Handbook. SCIENCE RESOURCE CENTER (SRC) The Science Resource Center (SRC), located in room 415 Bisdorf, is an excellent resource for students to study for lab and lecture exams. The center has models and slides for student use. ACADEMIC SUCCESS CENTER (ASC) The Academic Success Center (ASC) is a student resource center that provides services such as math assistance, peer tutoring, support, and much more. DISABILITIES SUPPORT SERVICE It is NOVA’s policy to accommodate students with disabilities in accordance with federal and state laws. Students who have a disability and need accommodations to succeed in their academic studies should contact the campus Disability Support Services and provide appropriate documentation of the disability. Once accommodations are approved, it is the student’s responsibility to deliver the letter from the counselor to the instructor listing permitted accommodations and discuss how they will be implemented. If students with accommodations have difficulty accessing any part of the course materials or activities for the class, they should contact the instructor immediately. Accommodations for testing must be arranged by the student in advance of the date of the test. For more information, please refer to the following link: http://www.nvcc.edu/disabilityservices/index.html) CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF THE LABORATORY AND EQUIPMENT It is essential to keep all work areas, equipment, and supplies clean, neat, and in good condition. You are expected to clean up after each lab and to treat all equipment and supplies with care. This is especially important in the handling and maintaining of microscopes. The lab will be checked after each session, and if it is not cleaned appropriately, 10% will be deducted from the grade of every student in the class for that lab. APPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR Appropriate shoes are required at all times. Shoes that are unacceptable include open-toed, slippers, Crocs, spike heels, or shoes that do not provide full coverage of the foot. You will be required to leave the laboratory if you are wearing inappropriate shoes. No Exceptions. PERSONAL ITEMS During the lab, please use the back tables to store coats and books that are not used in class; these items must not be placed on the lab tabletops. Also, food and beverages are not permitted in the laboratory. LABORATORY CONDUCT Please turn off your cell phones and other electronic devices during the laboratory session. A report of abusive behavior on the part of any student in working with the personnel in the Science Lab may result in the student receiving an “F” for the course. You will be required to leave the lab for any of the following reasons: -If you are wearing sandals, opened-toed, or otherwise inappropriate shoes -If you are not wearing goggles when directed to do so -If your behavior is inappropriate or endangers others There are no exceptions to these regulations. If you are asked to leave the lab, it will count as an absence. Page 4
