27-09-2021 2.1 Kriya yoga is defined as Tapas (will power), Svadhyaya (guided self-reflection/mantra japa) and Isvara Pranidhana (letting go of expectations). 2.2 Kriya yoga should be practice for bringing about Samadhi and minimizing the Kleshas. 2.3– 2.9 Describe the 5 Kleshas (that which results in suffering/discomfort): Avidya (wrong knowledge), Asmita (I feeling), Raga (desire), Dvesa (dislike) and Abhinivesa (fear). Patterns/ states of the Kleshas. 2.10 – 2.14 Relation between Kleshas – Karma (the consequences of Kleshas - unhappiness/dukha). 2.15 The yogi sees the seed of suffering through discrimination (unhappiness is built in happiness - 3 gunas - change). 2.16– 2.28 Explain the primary cause of suffering: identification of the Seer (that which perceives) with the Seen (the objects of perception). Description of the 3 gunas (qualities): Sattva (clarity), Rajas (activity) and Tamas (heaviness) and the nature of their effects. Developing clarity is a gradual process! 2.29 The means to attaining yoga (Samadhi) are the 8 limbs of yoga: Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. 2.30 – 2.45 Describe the Yamas (non-harmfulness, truth, abstention from stealing, restrain, non-greediness) and Niyamas (cleanliness, contentment, tapas, Svadhyaya and Isvara Pranidhana) and the result of practicing them. 2.46 – 2.48 Describe the qualities of Asana: Sthira (firm/steady) and Sukha (pleasant/comfortable). Note the importance of balancing effort and relaxation!
