Health WalksMore Active, More OftenWe’ve launched the Wakefield Year of Walking to encourage everyone tobecome healthier and more active by walking. Walking is one of the easiestways to get more active, lose weight and become fit. It’s simple, free and idealfor all ages and abilities. Why not simply walk to school, the shops, to work, or step outside and explore thewonderful parks and greenspace the district has to offer or take the family to oneof our story trails at Pugneys Country Park, Anglers Country Park or NewmillerdamCountry Park.To find out more about the different walks and events happening throughout theyear or find places to walk near you, check out:www.wakefield.gov.uk/yearofwalkingYou can filter the list of activities based on location, difficulty and distance, whetherthey are suitable for all the family, whether the route is suitable for people withdisabilities or whether there is a cost for hiring equipment such as a running buggy. You don’t need to join one of our organised walks to get going - there are plenty ofplaces you can begin your Year of Walking!Download our app and begin your 500 mile challengeAs part of our Year of Walking you can now download our FREE Aspire Health appand join our 500 miles walking challenge. The Aspire Health app is available in theApp Store and Google Play store.By downloading the Aspire Health app, you can sign up to the ‘500 miles challenge’and track your steps against other people on the leader board. There’s monthly prizes, a calendar of events, hints and tips, new challenges andevents will also be added throughout the year.We should all be aiming to build up to 150 minutes of moderate physical activity perweek. Moderate activities include anything that makes you breathe more heavily andfeel slightly warmer than normal. Most importantly you should still be able to talk. Health walks are a great way of helpingyou to achieve this goal and become more active more often. What are Health Walks?Wakefield Health Walks are regular, short walks that last between 20 minutes to 2 hoursand are aimed at people of all abilities and fitness levels. Each walk is led by at leastone trained walk leader as part of the National Walking for Health Scheme.Health walks are FREE and there is no need to book. All walks are non-smoking andplease check before bringing along dogs. You don’t need any fancy walking gear, justsensible footwear and clothing suited to the weather conditions.
