Career PathwaysCURRICULUM PHILOSOPHYMahwah High School provides a comprehensive educational program offering a wide variety oflearning experiences for all students. The curriculum is the means to attain the establishededucational goals of the Mahwah Township Public School district. More specifically, the curriculum isdesigned to provide students with the knowledge and skills required for: ensuring success in college/university level studies, in the military, or in the workplacemeeting the challenges of the global economypracticing responsible citizenship and family lifebecoming life-long learnerscompleting the NJ State Assessment requirements successfullyFull-year and half-year courses are offered in eleven content areas. Some courses are required tomeet district and NJ State Department of Education mandates, while others provide students withelectives to fulfill individual interests and needs. Courses are aligned with the NJ Student LearningStandards and most incorporate technological components. It is expected that college-bound studentswill experience college-level work by 12th grade through advanced placement courses, collegeenrichment courses, dual enrollment courses, virtual courses, or partial early-college enrollment.Career Pathways are opportunities for students to design an educational program aligned withpossible post-secondary college or career interests. Elective course clusters are sequenced forstudents to follow a career path. Students can select their rigorous required courses and electives tocreate a concentration of courses that will be helpful as they pursue post-secondary opportunities.Please note that students may opt to choose a variety of elective courses to explore potentialopportunities.The career pathways are suggested courses based on career interest. Students are not locked into onepathway and may select any course as long as they have met all requirements and prerequisites.

Option-Two ProgramsOption-Two Programs are designed to give juniors and seniors the opportunity to explore valuabletopics, careers, and experiences outside of the normal Mahwah High School Program of Study in realworld settings. Each option has its own requirements, and students should speak to their guidancecounselors about which option is best for their goals.BCC PrepStudents have the opportunity to enroll in courses atBergen Community College and earn up to 18college credits. Day or evening classes are available.Community ServiceStudents will be able to receive high school credit byparticipating in a project that is designed to enhanceand augment some aspect of the Mahwahcommunity. Educational experiences will take placeoutside the school building during and/or after theregular school day or as determined by therepresentative of the community that is responsiblefor overseeing the project.Teaching MentorshipThis is a program of study that includes supervisedpractical training in an educational setting. Studentsdevelop workplace-readiness skills, professionalism,and independence. Students will also have anopportunity through observation, interview, andstudy to develop an understanding of the teachingprofession.Structured Learning Experience (SLE)The school provides classroom training in developingbusiness knowledge, workplace skills, andoccupational information, while the businesscommunity provides the employment where thestudents practice these skills and acquire experiencethat can only be gained on the job.T3 Innovations and InventionsThe main goal of this course is to provide 11th and12th grade students with an opportunity for astudent-driven, teacher-guided, semi-structuredproject/problem-based learning experience.Honors Independent Research CapstoneThis course provides students with a rigorouslearning experience tailored to their individual needsand talents. Students in the honors independentstudy will present their project/results locally, or atregional/national conferences and competitions.Professional InternshipThis is a program of study that includes supervisedpractical training. Students develop workplacereadiness skills, professionalism, and independence.Students will also have an opportunity throughobservation, interview, and study to develop anunderstanding of specific occupations.Dual EnrollmentStudents in grades 11 and 12 studying variouscourses have the opportunity to participate in dualenrollment programs sponsored by Seton HallUniversity, Fairleigh Dickinson, and/or BergenCommunity College.Community Based Internship (CBI)This experience will develop skills to educatestudents and prepare them for the transition fromschool to the world of work. Students will developskills and strategies that promote personalresponsibility related to employment.
