Rationale: The mission of the Mahwah Schools is to provide every student with the opportunity to maximize his/her educational and career potential. Historically, to educate a child in our school district, students have reported to a school building for face-to-face instruction. In light of the current public health-related situation and in the event of a school closure, it is imperative that we provide our students with an educational experience that will maintain continuity of these learning experiences. Mahwah continues to build its instructional practices, especially as it pertains to delivering digital learning experiences at the PreK-12 level. With that in mind, the district has been charged with employing online collaborative problem-based learning experiences in order to afford our students with continuous educational opportunities that maintain learning over a period of time. Please refer to the information found throughout this document, along with the active hyperlinks made available to you, as well. All updated information can be found on our “Health-Related School Closure Preparedness Plan” tab, from our district homepage. New Jersey Department of Education Guidance: NJDOE Requirements Requirements to Implement a Public Health-Related School Closure, New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) guidance identifies school closure as a potential strategy to limit transmission within a community. In the event a board of education is provided a written directive by either the NJDOH or the health officer of the jurisdiction to institute a public health-related closure, the board of education may utilize home instruction to provide instructional services to enrolled students. The provision of home instruction services should be guided by N.J.A.C. 6A:16-10.1 and may include direct services, online instruction, services provided through contract with another district board of education, or any other means developed by the district to meet the needs of its students. Any day in which students impacted by a public health-related closure have access to home instruction services provided consistent with the guidance in this memo will count as a day in which the board of education has provided public school facilities toward its compliance with the 180-day requirement in accordance with N.J.S.A. 18A:7F-9. Access All students and families have been able to access school-issued Google accounts. Google Classrooms and all work connected to Google Classrooms are secured on a protected district system. Any difficulties with access to technology have been addressed on an individualized need by the school’s Director of Technology, Director of Curriculum and Technology, and Supervisor of Technology Integration. Student Attendance The district continues to maintain adherence to our Board of Education Policy 5200 – Attendance and Home Instruction Policy 2412. The expectation for capturing student attendance continues, through students’ completion of a Google Form, which will update students’ daily attendance via Realtime, our student management platform. Through this method, students will be able to be recorded “as present” for applicable instructional days. Additionally, staff members confirm daily attendance. Internal documentation is used to record reasons for absences, and outreach takes place to “check in” on students from teachers, counselors, and case managers. In some cases, there is follow-up communication by building administration. Attendance will continue to be logged daily, tracking student attendance regularly. In the event a student misses any academic session, follow-up communication will be made to families by the teacher, school counselor, case manager, and/or building administration. Families who communicate that they are experiencing a hardship are also given additional supports. Our Student Resource Officer, if the district is unsuccessful with all matters of contact, makes a wellness-visit to the student’s home. 4 Page

Expectations for Students Identify a comfortable and quiet space to study/learn. Dedicate appropriate time to learning, as guided by your teachers. Check appropriate platforms (e.g., Mahwah website) Google Classrooms and school emails for information on courses, assignments, and resources, on a daily basis. Attend and participate in remote/virtual school check-in times offered by each of your teachers. If you are having any technical difficulties, please contact the Mahwah Technology Department. mahwahtech@mahwah.k12.nj.us Engage in the virtual school platform with honesty, as per our Academic Integrity policies. Submit all assignments in accordance with provided timelines and/or due dates. Find opportunities to be mindful, physically active, get outside, and know that we are here if you need us. Expectations for Parents Support your child in their learning process by: Monitoring Mahwah Public School updates via the district website, and checking in with your child daily about their online or alternative learning experiences. Encouraging adherence and attendance in the virtual school check-in times offered by each of your children’s teachers. Designating a place where your child will work independently on his/her assigned tasks. Asking your child to provide a brief summary of the learning he/she is engaging in for each class to ensure their understanding of the content and of the process they are being asked to engage in to demonstrate their learning. Asking your child about their deadline calendar and supporting them, as needed, in submitting assignments in accordance with the established deadlines. Reminding your child to email his/her teachers if they have any questions. Creating opportunities for normalcy. Preparing students for a successful return to school, upon completion of our emergency closure. Expectations for Teachers Develop plans that align to material that has been covered (the goal is to maintain the learning that has taken place though, reinforcement, remediation, and extension) Clearly post online learning plans for all of their classes on Mahwah Website or agreed upon platform, i.e Google Classroom. Adhere to the schedule per grade level bans that is posted within this document detailing the online maintenance of connectivity with students. While online it is expected that teachers are interacting with students in a meaningful way, posing questions, providing feedback and assessing the learning that is taking place. This is also a time that teachers can “checkin” with students who are in need of assistance, both academically and socially. During the time allocated for professional responsibilities, the teachers are asked to: preparation, office hours, lesson plans, grading, consult with parents/students, e-mail correspondence Participate in IEP meetings, as requested. This is also time to connect as teams and departments. Update student attendance 5 Page
