The Runes received a Pacemaker Award at the Annual NSPAconference in Chicago. NSPA cited the continuity of Runes from issue to issue as “probably the nicest inthe country. The Runes also received the Gold Crown Award, one of the two in the nation given to highschool magazines by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Runes also received the NCTE SuperiorAchievement Award, as well as the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Award, which qualifies it forthe Gold Crown. These trends continue and Runes is considered one of the five premium studentmagazines in the nation.The school newspaper, The BARB, has seen many of its staff members pursue media related careersafter high school. It has won numerous Utah Journalism Education Association Awards for journalisticwriting, editing, photography, and layout, and has been consistently ranked in the top five of largeschool newspapers in state competitions. In addition, the BARB received a Columbia Scholastic PressAssociation Certificate, which recognizes the 3 percent of all college and high school newspapers in thecountry.

Brighton received the Excellence in Education Award from the United States Department of Education in1982-83, and was one of only two schools in the state so recognized that year. In 1993-94 school year,Brighton High School received status as a Utah Centennial School.ATHLETICS:Brighton offers athletic teams at the sophomore, junior varsity, and varsity levels. They include: football,basketball, baseball, volleyball, softball, tennis, soccer, track, cross country, golf, hockey, Acadian DrillTeam, cheerleading, and wrestling. Brighton High has been the State All Sports Champion on manyoccasions since 1980, annually winning state championships in many athletic areas.MUSICAL, DRAMA, DANCE PRODUCTIONS:Brighton presents a variety of dance, dramatic, choral, and instrumental productions during the schoolyear. Dance productions are composed of several modern dance concerts with seasonal themes, whichinclude a women’s tribute performance, state showcases, and a year-end performance concert, inaddition to ballroom showcases. Dramatic productions include a Broadway musical, a school play, aproduction company, plays, competitive one-acts, scenes and monologues, as well as a spring musicalreview. The music department presents multiple choral, band, and orchestra concerts seasonally, alsocompetition in several vocal solo/ensemble and instrumental festivals on regional, state, and nationallevels.The Brighton High Performing Arts Department has also been awarded a number of regional, state, andnational honors throughout the history of the school. Recent dance accolades include 1 st and 2nd placewins in the Shakespearean Dance Competition and a featured showcase in the National Dance FestivalCompetition in Philadelphia. Recent honors for the Drama Department include 1 st place wins in the UtahShakespeare Competition for the past four years. The Music Department’s awards comprise superiorratings in both regional and state choral competitions and gold medals at national choir festivals overthe past five years. Additionally, both the orchestra and band have received excellent ratings in regionaland state instrumental competitions and silver medals at the National Heritage Music Festival.ADVANCED PLACEMENT DISTINCTION:Brighton is among the top five high schools in the nation and in Utah relative to the percentage ofstudents passing Advanced Placement Examinations. In 2009, students passed 454 examinations with ascore of 3 or higher.COMPREHENSIVE GUIDANCE PROGRAM:The Comprehensive Counseling and Guidance Program is organized around the development ofstudents. The program contains sequential activities that are planned and implemented by certifiedschool counselors with the support of teachers, administrators, students, parents, para-professionals,and persons in the community.LATE START/PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMITTEES:During the 2009-2010 school year, the Brighton High faculty, staff, and community voted to start schoolat 7:50 a.m., thus giving teachers 50 minutes each morning to meet one-on-one with students needingassistance, have departmental meetings, or collaborate in professional learning committees.
