5FOREWORDDear Parents and Students,While it has always been the aim of the school to provide students with an environment in whichthey can learn effectively and enthusiastically, we also encourage them to challenge themselves sothat they can cope with a suitable amount of pressure and competitiveness. Our Year 8 students are now approaching the end of their Key Stage 3 education. To prepare fortheir Key stage 4, students have to embark on a two-year course known as the International GeneralCertificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE), at the end of which they will sit a series of examinations.Throughout the next two years, they also have to complete a number of coursework components. To be successful in this course, they have to work consistently hard throughout. We adopt Cambridge Assessment International Education as our examination board, which is thelargest and the most established IGCSE provider in the world. In addition, the IGCSE is a subjectspecific curriculum. This means that students have to choose a number of subjects to study in depthfor the next two years. The types and number of subjects offered are based on the rationale thatstudents should follow a fairly wide and balanced curriculum. This philosophy also ties in with theDiploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate, which students will follow after thecompletion of their IGCSE course. This booklet serves to outline the subjects offered by the school and provide an overview of theexamination requirements. We hope that you will find this booklet informative and, if you have anyqueries, please contact our subject teachers or the school administrators.Dr LAU Siu-LingHead PrincipalPo Leung Kuk Choi Kai Yau SchoolIGCSE Options 2018

6INTRODUCTIONEach student’s IGCSE selection will comprise a number of compulsory subjects, and a range ofelectives (Optional subjects). There is also an “Extra Option” available in English Literature, however, this will only be offered to those pupils who have shown outstanding ability in the subject and apassion for reading.Chinese, English, International Mathematics and Global Perspectives will be offered as part of a coreprogramme and are not optional. However, pupils will be entered for either First Language orSecond Language English and Chinese based on their level of language proficiency. In addition, pupilsmust choose a minimum of at least one Science subject and one from the Individuals & Societiesfaculty.Optional SubjectsIn addition to English, Chinese, Maths and Global Perspectives, which must be taken by all pupils, students must indicate their preferred optional subjects in each block of subject choices. Whenchoosing options students are reminded to observe the following rules:1. Where possible, students will be entered for the 6 subjects they choose on the reply slip. If asubject proves to be unavailable then the student will automatically be entered for theirback-up option.2. Students must choose at least one Science from Biology, Chemistry and Physics.3. Students must choose at least one subject from Business Studies, Economics, Geographyand History.4. Pupils should not choose both Business Studies and Economics5. For linguistically able students, they may be offered English Literature. Students cannotchoose to take this options; however, they should indicate whether they would accept it if itwere offered.6. Parents and students should note that the final choice of the subjects has to meet with theapproval of the school. Where possible, students should achieve at least an M grade in theiroverall academic achievement in each subject they have chosen. When making the finaldecision, the school will take into consideration the student’s ability and attitude.7. Subjects may not run if they only attract a small number of students, in which case we willtake the students’ back-up choice.Compulsory Subjects:Optional Subjects:At least one from:At least one from:ChineseGlobal ss StudiesGeographyArt DesignArt TextileDesign & TechnologyFood & NutritionMusicChemistryExtra Option:English LiteratureIGCSE Options 2018EconomicsHistoryAdditional MathematicsPhysical EducationDramaICT

7Changing SubjectsIt is normal for students to be unsure about some subjects, particularly those they have not studiedbefore. As such, it is possible to request a change to your subject choices after the form has beensubmitted. Any request must take the form of a letter outlining the reasons for the proposed changesigned by the parent/guardian. This should be handed to the IGCSE Coordinator as soon as possible. However, please bear in mind that some subjects may become full, and changing into a class maynot be possible. After the end of September students will no longer be able to change into a subject, however, if a student is really struggling with a subject there will be opportunities to drop subjectslater in the course.Examination FeesThe total cost of a student’s IGCSE examinations will vary depending on the number of subjects theytake and the exchange rate at the time of payment.IGCSE Options 2018

Students will also beexpected to take part in classroom discussions, as they can only develop theirideas by discussing them with the class and having them questioned by others. This will enable students to formulate their ideas and become more certain ofwhat they think. It will also help them in the English oral component. Is Literature hard? No. If you can think for yourself and have an opinion about what you have read then it will not behard. It will, however, be time consuming. There is a lot of writing to be completed to practice forthe coursework and the examinations, but with time it will get easier!!If you have been selected but are not sure about whether you should take the Literature course findsomeone from the English Department and we will do our best to answer your questions.“If you love reading you will love Literature!!!!!”IGCSE Options 2018
