New safety advicePowdered infant formula is not sterile1. It maycontain bacteria that can cause serious illnessin infants. By preparing and storing powderedinfant formula correctly, you can reduce the riskof illness. This leaflet contains new informationto help you prepare bottle feeds from powderedinfant formula as safely as possible.Breast is bestThe World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that infants areexclusively breastfed for the first six months of life. Babies who areexclusively breastfed will get the best start for growth, developmentand health. Infants who are not breast fed need a suitable breast-milksubstitute, for example, infant formula.1FAO/WHO. 2007. 2Cleaning, sterilizing& storingIt is very important that all the equipment used to feed and to preparefeeds for infants (for example, bottles, teats, lids) has been thoroughlycleaned and sterilized before use. Cleaning and sterilizing equipmentremoves harmful bacteria that could grow in the feed and make infants ill.CleaningStep 1Wash your hands with soap and waterand dry using a clean cloth.Step 2Wash all feeding and preparationequipment thoroughly in hot soapy water.Use a clean bottle and teat brush to scrubthe inside and outside of bottles and teatsto make sure that all remaining feed isremoved from the hard-to-reach places.Step 3Rinse thoroughly in safe water.

SterilizingCleaned equipment can be sterilized using a commercial sterilizer(follow manufacturer's instructions), or a pan and boiling water:Step 1Fill a large pan with water.Step 2Place the cleaned feeding and preparationequipment into the water. Make sure that theequipment is completely covered with waterand that no air bubbles are trapped.Step 3Cover the pan with a lid and bring to a rollingboil, making sure the pan does not boil dry.Keep the pan covered until the feedingequipment is needed.StoringWash and dry your hands before handling sterilized equipment. It is recommendedthat you use sterilized forceps for handling sterilized equipment. If you removefeeding and preparation equipment from the sterilizer before you need it, keep itcovered in a clean place. Fully assemble feeding bottles if you remove them fromthe sterilizer before you need them. This prevents the inside of the bottle, and theinside and outside of the teat becoming contaminated again.Cleaning Sterilizing StoringStep 4

How to prepare abottle feedStep 1Clean and disinfect a surface on which to preparethe feed.Step 2Wash your hands with soap and water, and dry with a cleanor disposable cloth.Step 3Boil some safe water. If using an automatic kettle, wait untilthe kettle switches off. If using a pan to boil water, makesure the water comes to a rolling boil.Step 4Read the instructions on the formula's packaging to findout how much water and how much powder you need.Adding more or less formula than instructed couldmake infants ill.Step 5Taking care to avoid scalds, pour the correct amount ofboiled water into a cleaned and sterilized feeding bottle. The water should be no cooler than 70ºC, so do notleave it for more than 30 minutes after boiling.Step 6Add the exact amount of formula to the waterin the bottle.

Step 7Mix thoroughly by gently shaking or swirling the bottle.Step 8Immediately cool to feeding temperature by holdingthe bottle under cold running tap water, or by placingin a container of cold or iced water. So that you do notcontaminate the feed, make sure that the level of thecooling water is below the lid of the bottle.Dry the outside of the bottle with a clean ordisposable cloth.Step 10Check the temperature of the feed by dripping a littleonto the inside of your wrist. It should feel lukewarm, not hot. If it still feels hot, cool some more beforefeeding.Step 11Feed infant.Step 12Throw away any feed that has not been consumedwithin two hours.Warning: Never use a microwave to prepare or warm-up feeds. Microwavesheat unevenly and may cause ‘hot spots’ that could scald the infant’s mouth.Bottle feeding - How to prepare a bottle feedStep 9

Can I store bottlefeeds to use later? It is safest to prepare a fresh feed each time one is needed, and to consumeimmediately. This is because prepared feeds provide ideal conditions forbacteria to grow - especially when kept at room temperature. If you need toprepare feeds in advance for use later, they should be prepared in individualbottles, cooled quickly and placed in the refrigerator (no higher than 5ºC).Throw away any refrigerated feed that has not been used within 24 hours.Warning: If you do not have a refrigerator it is notsafe to prepare feeds in advance - always prepare afresh feed as it is needed. How do I re-warmrefrigerated bottlefeeds? Remove a bottle of feed from the refrigerator just before it is needed. Re-warm for no more than 15 minutes. Feeds can be re-warmed byplacing in a container of warm water, making sure the level of the wateris below the top of the cup. Occasionally shake or swirl the bottle tomake sure that it heats evenly. Check the temperature of the feed by dripping a little onto the insideof your wrist. It should feel lukewarm, not hot. Throw away any re-warmed feed that has not been consumed withintwo hours.Warning: Never use a microwave oven to re-warmfeeds. Microwave ovens heat unevenly, and maycause 'hot spots' that can scald the infant's mouth.

Can I bring preprepared feedswith me when Iam travelling?Yes - but make sure the feed is cold before it is transported, and iskept cold during transport. This will slow down or stop the growth ofharmful bacteria. Prepare feeds as normal, cool quickly and place in the refrigerator(no warmer than 5ºC). Immediately before you leave home, remove the cold feeds fromthe refrigerator and place in a cool bag with ice packs. If your trip is longer than two hours, you may not be able to keep thepre-prepared feeds cold. In this case, you should prepare feeds as youneed them. Bring individual portions of powdered formula with you ina cleaned and sterilized container, and prepare feeds as normal usingboiled water that has been cooled to no less than 70ºC.Storing/Re-warming/Travelling You can then place the feeds in a refrigerator at your destination,or re-warm a feed when you need one.

What if I do nothave access toboiling water? The safest way to prepare a feed is using water that has been boiledand cooled to no less than 70ºC. If you do not have access to boiling water, you may wish to use sterileliquid infant formula. Alternatively, you can prepare feeds using fresh, safe water at roomtemperature and consume immediately. Feeds prepared with water cooler than 70ºC should not be storedfor use later. Throw away any left-over feed after two hours.More advice on preparing powdered infantformula:rePrepaHow to d InfanterePowdla inFormu ttingsSeCarenewtainseklet conpreparp youThis booto helforationmulainformant fornged inf-feedipowderand cupdingfeele.bottlepossibely assafasrePrepaHow to forlaFormu edingeCup-F emat Ho

A Note about Array formulas (not for Excel 365 / Excel 2021) Sometimes, you will need to enter a formula as array formula. In Excel 365/Excel 2021, all formulas are treated as Array formula, hence you need not enter any formula as Array formula. Only for older versions of Excel, you might need to enter a formula as Array formula.
