Basic Concepts andTerminology

What are we going to talk about?General Database Terms Relational Databases One-to-Many Relationships Parent-Child Relationships Primary Keys Referential IntegrityEQuIS-specific Terms Data Tables Reference Tables Facilities Locations Location Groups Location GroupsAnalytesAnalyte GroupsAction LevelsCrosstab ReportsEnvironmental SamplingTerms CAS RNs Sample Types Matrices EDDs E-Data

General Database Terms

Relational DatabasesRelational databases stores their data in tables and canenforce restrictions on the data by a set of rules calledrelationships.

One-to-Many RelationshipsOne-to-many relationships are relationshipsin which a record in one table can be relatedto many records in another table. There can be manysampling points within asingle project site. For example, “Gas StationX” may contain 8 differentmonitoring wells.

Parent-Child RelationshipsParent-child relationships are rules that enforceorganization in a database by requiring a record in a childtable to have a corresponding record in a parent table. The structure allows repeating information using parentchild relationships: each parent can have many childrenbut each child only has one parent.

Primary KeysA Primary key is a field or a set of fields in a table thatconstitute a unique record within that table. One primary key field in this tableallows for each chemical to be listedonly once.A set of primary key fields this table allows forstorage of multiple coordinate systems persampling point.Primary keys must be:1) populated (not null)2) unique

Referential IntegrityReferential integrity is the collective set of rules thatensures consistent data within the database, including Primary Keys One-to-Many Relationships Parent-Child Relationships

EQuIS-specific Terms

Data TablesData tables contain information acquired from, derivedfrom, or describing some part of a specific project.Data tables are designated by the prefixDT SAMPLE.DT ,as in

Reference TablesReference tables contain lists of reference values, valid values orlook-up values.Reference tables are designated by the prefix RT , as in RT ANALYTE.rt analyte Cas rnChemical Name000056-55-3 Benz(a)anthracene000065-85-0 Benzoic Acid000067-64-1 Acetone000071-43-2 Benzene000074-83-9 Bromomethane000074-87-3Chloromethane000075-01-4 .Vinyl chloride

FacilitiesFacilities are the physical (site) or logical (project)extent of data that is made available for reporting ormodeling.Facility

LocationsLocations are uniquely designated sampling points, typicallyon the ground surface, that can be identified spatially by x,y, and z coordinates.Stored in EQuIS inDT LOCATIONas a “SYS LOC CODE”.X coordinateY coordinateTotal depthSurface elevationDrillerStart date others

Location GroupsLocation Groups are collection of locations for reporting andgraphing.

Analytes‘Analytes’ are defined as the substance you analyze orquantify by an analytical procedure. Many different names can be used to mean the same thing:analyte, chemical, compound, constituent, contaminant, determinant

Analyte GroupsAnalyte Groups are collections of analytes for reporting andgraphing.

Action LevelsAction levels are values against which results orparameter measurements are compared to. Action Levelsmay also be referred to as standards, comparison criteria,or other names.Action Level

Crosstab ReportsData as contained in a database:Cross Tabbed data:Crossed tabbed data is much easier to read andunderstand.

Environmental SamplingTerms

CAS RNsCAS RNs are abbreviations for Chemical Abstracts ServiceRegistry Numbers. The CAS RN, often referred to as “CASnumber,” is a unique numeric identifier which refers to achemical substance. For example, 58-08-2 is the CAS Registry Number forcaffeine.Compare to chemical name synonyms:661-97-2 1,2,3, 3-Hexafluoro-2,3-dichloropropaneCFC-216 vs. Freon 216To find CAS numbers, visit http://www.cas.org http://www.chemfinder.com

Sample Types“Sample types” refer to the classification of samplesbased on the sampling purpose and procedure.Sample types are stored in RT SAMPLE TYPE and mayinclude: NNormal Environmental Sample FBField Blank BSBlank Spike BDBlank Spike Duplicate TBTrip Blank RBMaterial Rinse Blank MSLab Matrix Spike .

MatricesMatrix describes the media from which the sample wastaken.Matrices are stored in Groundwater Soil Air Fish Tissue .RT MATRIXand may include:

EDDsEDDs, or Electronic Data Deliverables, are electronictabular formats for sharing, manipulating, and using data.An Access database, an Excelspreadsheet, a tab delimitedtext file, and even zipped filesare all examples of EDDs.EDDEFWEDD or4-FileFormat

E-DataE-Data refers to data that are available in a usableelectronic format.EDPChecksUnlike EDDs, E-Data is NOT directly checked by theEQuIS Data Processor

EQuIS Reports

The Purpose of EQuIS ReportsEQuIS Professional offers many different types of reports.Reports may be used to build simple queries or create highlyformatted output. There are several types of reportsavailable: Tabular Reports Crosstab Reports Time Series Charts XYZ Plots (Contours, Surface Plots)

TabularReports Query data frommultiple tableswith one report Easy to selectparameters andsave Pick Reportsfor future use Can filter datafurther and useother tools withintabular reports

CrosstabReports Build Crosstab Reportswith tabular queries tobetter understanddata Apply Microsoft Exceltemplates and publishdesigns to thedatabase Publish Crosstabdesigns to make themvisible to all users

query, and map the information found in an EQuIS databases. The EQuIS for ArcGIS interface is ideal for displaying and effectively communicating project information. IMPORTANT: The following fields must be populated in EQuIS Professional (e.g., the IDENTIFIER and COORD_TYPE_CODE and be populated) in order to use EQuIS for ArcGIS: DT .

Rapid Flow, Titration, Turbidimetry, Ultraviolet- Visible Spectroscopy (UV/VIS) Parameter/Analyte Water pH EPA 150.1 Turbidity EPA 180.1 Calcium EPA 200.7 Iron EPA 200.7 Magnesium EPA 200.7 Potassium EPA 200.7 Silica, Total EPA 200.7 Sodium EPA 200.7 Aluminum EPA 200.8 Antimony EPA 200.8 Arsenic EPA 200.8 .

Option 1: Plug a Tableau workbook directly into the EQuIS database. Issues: Requires a more expensive Tableau license More filtering has to be done, either in SQL or in Tableau Each workbook needs to be specifically set up. More Coding (SQL, T-SQL, Tableau functions) You lose all the extra functionality that EQuIS reports .
