STATIONARY ENERGY STORAGEThe use of advanced technologies for energy storage provide a vital component for the implementation of aconsistent energy revolution. Lithium ion batteries are now increasingly used here due to their high energydensity and cycle stability and a fall in cost. The regulatory requirements of theUN 38.3 and the harmonised standardsfor EMC and electrical safety are aprerequisite for market admission. However, they do not guarantee theprevention of unacceptable risks in energystorage systems. On the contrary:there is a safety loophole. How is this possible? After all, manystandards regulate the safety requirements for lithium ion cells, accumulatorsand systems. There are also standardsfor stationary storage systems such asthe IEC 62485 “Safety requirementsfor secondary batteries and batteryinstallations“, but essentially these werewritten for lead acid and nickel-cadmiumor nickel-metal hydride batteries. Specificregulations for the safety of lithium iontechnology in the network-specificapplications are currently missing. Thesestandards are in the process of beinggenerated. They are still in the proposalor draft stage. The standardisationprocess also means finding consensusand therefore requires time.SGS experts help you close the safetygap today. Our professional expertsare involved with the working groups. This know-how benefits you during theenergy storage qualification.SGS is a member of the BVES(German Energy Storage Association)WE OFFER THE FOLLOWING SERVICES FORSTATIONARY ENERGY STORAGE CE-relevant safety tests EMC testing Assistance during the riskassessment Evaluation acc. to safety guidelines forLi-ion home battery storage systems Testing on the basis of the VDEapplication regulations UN 38.3-Transport test Electrical characterisation Calendaric/cyclic ageing(electrical, thermal, combined) Performance and qualityrequirement verification Development-accompanying tests Standards research Evaluation of new battery chemicalsCOVERED NORMS/STANDARDSWe test according to recognisedstandards such as: UN 38.3-Transport test IEC 61427, IEC 62619, IEC 62620, IEC 62281, IEC 62485 UL 1973 KBIA 10104 BATSO 02 VDE-AR-E 2510-50 Safety guidelines for Li-ion homebattery storage systems

BATTERIES FOR CONSUMER PRODUCTSLithium ion batteries are part of our daily lives, whether present in a mobile phone, notebook or power tool. Theyare also increasingly used in many other areas such as medical devices or e-bikes.Compared to other battery technologies, lithium ion batteries offer advantagessuch as higher energy density or cyclestability. This is offset by a higher riskof fire in the event of a short circuit. An electronic protection circuit is alsorequired to prevent overcharging ordepth discharge. To minimise these risks, lithium ionbatteries must comply with several testprocedures. The SGS Battery Test House in Munichhas more than 15 years of experience inthe testing of lithium ion batteries forconsumer products. We can carry out, e.g.,the important UN 38.3-Transport test forlithium batteries using our accreditationaccording to DIN/EN/ISO/IEC 17025.We also offer the CB certificationaccording to IEC 62133.WE OFFER THE FOLLOWING SERVICES FORLITHIUM BATTERIES Safety tests/misuse tests Short circuit, overload Thermal stability Nail penetration Crush UN 38.3-Transport test Electrical characterisation Calendar/cyclic ageing(electrical, thermal, combined) Environmental simulation(e.g. IP protection system) CB certification according toIEC 62133 KC mark for KoreaCOVERED NORMS/STANDARDSWe test according to recognisedstandards such as: UN 38.3-Transport test IEC 62133, IEC 60086, IEC 61960, IEC 62281 UL 62133, UL 1642, UL 2054 BATSO 01 KC 62133SGS Germany GmbHHofmannstr. 50, D-81379 München, t 49 89 787475 - 101, f 49 89 1250406 - 4100, cqe@sgs.com, www.sgs.com/batterytestingSGS is the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company.

Safety Issues for Lithium-Ion Batteries Lithium-ion batteries are widely used as a power source in portable electrical and electronic products. While the rate of failures associated with their use is small, several well-publicized incidents related to lithium-ion batteries in actual use have raised concerns about their overall safety.

Let's briefly review the benefits of using lithium-ion batteries for UPS applications. First, we must consider the reasons lithium-ion batteries are a natural fit for next generation data centers where IT system operation, availability and space constraints must be balanced with cost. In general, lithium-ion batteries have a higher energy .
