The forthcomingOcean Conference,co-hosted by theGovernments ofKenya and Portugal, will come at a critical time as the worldis strengthening its efforts to mobilize, create and drive solutions to realize the17 Sustainable Development Goals by2030 in the context of an ongoing globalpandemic. How we respond to COVID19 beyond the immediate and necessaryrecovery of health and livelihoods willlikely determine not only whether wewill reach SDG 14, but also howsustainable the world of tomorrow willbe. The high-level United NationsConference to Support theImplementation of SustainableDevelopment Goal 14: Conserve andsustainably use the oceans, seas andmarine resources for sustainabledevelopment: The 2017 OceanConference co-hosted by Fiji andSweden paved the way for actionoriented, science based innovativesolutions aimed at reversing the declinein the health of our ocean for people, planet and prosperity. At the 2017 conference, approximately1,400 voluntary commitments (VC) forconcrete action to advanceimplementation of SDG 14 were made byMember States, the UN system, and anarray of stakeholders including civilsociety, the private sector andacademia.LMoearnTo date, over 1,600 VCs are registeredonline and the registry of voluntarycommitments remain open. Thesecommitments were one of the majoroutcomes of the conference and markeda global breakthrough on the path tosustainable management andconservation of our oceans, seas andmarine resources. To follow-up on the implementation ofthese voluntary commitments as well asto catalyse and generate new ones, theUN launched nine thematic multistakeholder Communities of OceanAction (COA) of which are closelyaligned with the targets of SDG14.Recently, an online survey on theimplementation of VCs published on theOcean Conference Registry was carriedout to get an update on theachievements and challenges as well asto receive suggestions on itsimplementation. The assessment of theimpact of these commitments based onthe survey and other availableinformation, concluded that the VCshave collectively furthered theattainment of SDG 14.Nevertheless, various challenges totheir implementation have beenreported such as, the lack of resources, funding, technical expertise, partnercooperation as well as politicalenvironment. Furthermore, theunprecedented COVID-19 pandemic thatbroke out last year has furtherexacerbated challenges in theimplementation of the VCs. Thiswebinar will take a look at the status ofimplementation of the VCs as well asthe impacts of the COVID- 19.re:.un.org/ecnerefnancohttps://oceommitments/c
