Please refer to OCMproduct catalogs and related instructions. If you haveany questions, please contact us.2. Warning for handling chains and sprocketsWhen connecting or disconnecting chain,a) Wear safety glasses, gloves, safety shoes andprotective clothing suitable for the job.b) Support the chain to prevent the uncontrolledmovment of chain and parts.c) Use proper tools in good condition suitable forconnecting and disconnecting chain.,d) Don t insert or remove pins without knowing theircorrect direction.e) Not only a person being at work but also a personnearby should follow the above instructions.3. Lock out power switchWhen installing, dismounting or maintenanceservicing like lubricating chain, always lock out powerswitch to avoid an accident.4. Prevent secondary accidentAlways clear around the working area in order toprevent secondary accident.9. Washing,When washing chain, don t use any acid, alkali, gasoline and high vaporized solvent. Dip it intokerosine and after that, lubricate it well.10. Aligning shaft and sprocketsTo operate the chain normally, sprockets must make astraight line and shafts must be installed and alignedhorizontally.11. Build and install chain1) Refer to the item above #1 to 10.2) Connecting linkA. Connecting platea) Loose fit type : It is easy to set theconnecting plate into pins.b) Semi-press fit type : Drive connecting plateinto pins by hammer.B. Spring clipa) Insert well in right direction.C. Cottered pina) Do not use the cotter pins on the market. Useonly the supplied cotters.b) Install as shown below.running directionT pin5. To replace parts of chain is dangerous60 degreesWhen replacing worn chain or sprocket, do notattempt to rebuild chains by using parts of disassembled chains. Replace all of them with new ones.6. Reprocessing chain is dangerousDo not try to reprocess chain. Almost all parts of chainare hardened by heat treatment.1) Plating or some surface treatment of heat treatedparts may result in the destruction of chain.2) Do not weld heat treated chain, sprockets and theirparts. It may lead to crack them and decrease theirstrength by heat influence.3) Do not anneal heat treated chain, sprockets andtheir parts.7. Remove any object interfering with chain and sprocketAny object interfering with driving chain and sprocketis not only dangerous but make their life span short.Always check and remove the interfering object.8. LubricationConstant lubrication prolongs the life of almost allchain. If the chain that need lubrication has been keptlong time unlubricated, the life of chain is shorter thanexpected.430 degreesS pin30 degrees3) Do not alter link hole and pin diameter to makethem easier fit into chain.4) Do not use any used parts, such as spring clip, cotter pin, connecting plate and so on.5) Check before drivingA. Connecting link is connected well and properly.B. Chain engages with teeth of sprockets.C. There is no object interfering and scatteringaround device.D. Safety cover has been installed.E. There is no object interfering with the chain orthe safety cover.F. There is nothing unusual on the connecting link.G. There is no unusual noise.12. Life span of chain and sprocketDue to the difference of operating enviroment, condition, teeth of sprocket, status of lubricating andso on, the life span of chains is different even if thechains are the same type and same size. If new chainis used with old sprocket with worn teeth, or if newsprocket is used with old chain that has already beenelongated, the life of chain and sprocket gets shorter.

FEATURES OF OCM ROLLER CHAINFEATURES OF OCM ROLLER CHAINFEATURES OF OCM ROLLER CHAIN1. Re-Punched Link HolesOCM's repunching process removes the taperof hole. Both sides of the hole are parallel, betterbearing between pins and holes. This process increases fatigue strength.2. Shot-PeeningRollers and link plates are shot peened toincrease fatigue strength.3. Oil Port oriented Solid BushThese holes, located on the inner side of the bushings away from bearing area, function as a reservoirfor extra lubricant. This feature reduces chain wear and extend the chain’s operating life.Oil portOriented4. Cylindrical roundness of Solid BushThe advantage of solid bush, cylindrical roundness, making a large bearing area and oil port as an oilreservoir, improves the chain wear resistance and minimize an initial chain elongation.5. PreloadingOCM roller chain is preloaded automatically afterassembly to minimize initial elongation.6

ROLLER CHAINCONSTRUCTION OF ROLLER CHAINRoller chain is made up of roller links and pin links.Roller link consists of two bushings press-fitted into roller link plates with two free rotating rollers over thebushings. Pin link consists of two pin link plates into which two pins are press-fitted.There are two types of pins. Rivet and cotter types.ROLLER CHAIN CONNECTIONCONNECTING LINKS1) Spring clip typeThis is standard for allsingle and multiple strandANSI standard chain, 80and below and Britishstandard chain, 16B andbelow.3) Offset LinkAn offset link is a combination of a roller link and apin link. This link is usedwhere the chain length isan odd number of pitches. It is recommended notto use an offset linkwhenever possible.2) Cotter typeThis is standard for allsingle and multiple strandANSI 100 and above, andBritish standard 20B andabove.4) Two Pitch Offset LinkThe unit consists of oneoffset and one roller link.Pins are press fitted intothe link plates and theunit is more suitable forheavy impact load andhigh speed driving thanone pitch offset link.7FEATURES OF OCM ROLLER CHAINFEATURES OF OCM ROLLER CHAIN

SELECTION OF OCM ROLLER CHAINSELECTION OF OCM ROLLER CHAINEASY CHAIN SELECTIONTable 1Easy selection chartHow to Use Chart1. The selection of OCM chain can be made byseeking the intersection of RPM of small sprocket(Horizontal line) and design horsepower (Verticalline).Example:The rpm of small sprocket is 200, and the designhorsepower is 2HP. OCM 50 is obtained and thenumber of teeth in small sprocket is 13T to 16T.Example:The RPM of small sprocket is 600 with designhorsepower of 8HP. In this case, OCM 50 andOCM 60 are sought. In case of OCM 50, the8number of teeth is 20T. In the event of OCM 60,the number of teeth is 13T.After having made a tentative selection based onthe chart, refer to the horsepower rating of thetentatively selected chain.2. If the speed of chain is less than 50M/min., it issometimes better to use a slow speed selectionshown on page 10.

DRIVE SELECTION PROCEDUREProcedure for selecting roller chain for transmissionGENERAL SELECTION(1) The following information is required forchain selection:1. Source of power2. Power to be transmitted3. Driven Equipment4. Revolution of drive and driven shaft per minute, and the diameter of the shaft5. Center distance of the shafts(2) Determination of service factorSelect a service factor from Table 4 to compensatefor the loads imposed on the chain by the typeof input power and the type of equipment to bedriven.(3) Establish design horsepowerMultiply the power to be transmitted by the factorobtained from (2)Single strand:(A) Design horsepower The power to be transmitted service factorMultiple stand:(B) Design horsepower The power to be transmitted service factorMultiple strand factor(4) Determination of number of teeth in smallsprocket and roller chainAccording to the number of revolutions anddesigning horsepower of a high speed shaft (incase of low speed, it is a drive shaft. In the eventof overdrive, it is a driven shaft), refer to Table 1Easy Selection Chart and horse power ratingsand select an appropriate chain and the numberof teeth of small sprocket. When you determinethe number of teeth for small sprocket, check thebore capacity of the sprocket selected, makingsure it will accommodate the driving shaft.(5) Determination of number of teeth in the largesprocketMultiply the drive ratio by the number of teeth insmall sprocket.Selection Example (1)Q1. A centrifugal compressor with 3HP is driven byan 1800 rpm electric motor. How to select chainand sprockets.A1. Seek the service factor, 1.3, from Table 4.Power to be transmitted Service factor Design Horsepower3HP 1.3 3.9HP2. Refer to Table 1. Easy selection chart for1800rpm 3.9HP, and OCM 35 chain withsprocket 16T to 20T is obtained.3. Check horsepower ratings for chain 35, andas you see, the horsepower ratings of 35 17Twith speed of 1800rpm is 3.93HP, which issatisfactory.4. The following are selected: Chain No 35Small sprocket 35 17TSelection Example (2)Q1. The number of revolutions for drive is 500rpmand the power to be transmitted is 10HP. Therpm is reduced to 125 (1/4). The center distanceshould be 270mm with a space limitation of480mm, and a uniform load. How to selectchain and sprocket for this application.A1. Design horsepower is computed as follows:Design horsepower: 10HP 1.0 10HP2. Select chain and the number of teeth forsprocket by referring to Table 1, Easy selectionChart and horsepower ratings.OCM 60 18T has been selected.125rpm3. Speed reduction ratio is 0.25 500rpmTherefore, the number of teeth in the large18Tsprocket is 72T 0.254. The outside diameter of the 18T is 119mm andthe 72T is 447mm.The space required for these arrangements is119 447 270 553mm which can not be2contained in the 480mm.5. Multiple strand chain is selected.OCM 50 - 2 16T to 20T is selected using Table 1,Easy Selection Chart. The design horsepoweris obtained from the formula (B)10HP 1.0 5.88HP1.7(1.7 is multiple strand factor)Refer to horsepower ratings. OCM 50 - 2, 18T isobtained. Its outside diameter is 99mm. Thelarge sprocket is 72T 18T outside diameter0.25373mm. However, this selection can not be contained in the space.6. Triple strand chain is selected in the samemanner as above. OCM 50 - 3, 13T and 52T areobtained. The outside diameter of sprockets is73mm, and 271 mm respectively.73 271 270 442mm can be contained in2the space required. The chain and sprockets selected are OCM 50 - 3,13T and 52T.9SELECTION OF OCM ROLLER CHAINSELECTION OF OCM ROLLER CHAIN

SELECTION OF OCM ROLLER CHAINSELECTION OF OCM ROLLER CHAINSELECTION ON SPECIAL APPLICATIONSIf an application requires the speed of roller chain at less than 50m/min., it is necessary to take intoaccount not wear elongation but fatigue strength. It is, therefore, economical to use a low speed selectionmethod rather than the general selection procedure. For operations under special conditions, a differentselection method is required from the general selection procedure. If not satisfactory to meet the requirements, please change the chain and sprocket andreview.(1) Operation at low speedsThe formula below is used if the speed of chainis less than 50M/min. with infrequent starts andstops.Allowable load Note:When operation conditions are frequent startsand stops and reversals of drive rotation, increase the service factors to compensate forthe conditions or consult OCM.Service SpeedMax load factorimposed on chain factorSelection procedure is as follows:1. Select slightly smaller roller chain and sprocketfrom a prime mover HP and RPM on Table 1Easy Selection Chart.2. Multiply the rpm of sprocket obtained by Table2, the value of chain speed per one rpm of thesprocket to obtain the speed of chain, m/min.3. To determine the max load imposed on chain.4. Service factor from Table 4.5. Speed factor is obtained from Table 3, speedfactor.(2) Operations under abnormal atmosphereconditionsIf the atmosphere condition of operation isworse than ordinary, consult OCM. If operationatmosphere is high temperature or corrossive,it is recommended to use stainless steel rollerchain.Table 3 Speed FactorSpeed of Roller chain (m/min) Speed Factor1.0Less than 106.
