BCom Honoursin FinancialPlanningThe primary purpose of the BComHonours (Financial Planning)programme is to strengthenthe student’s knowledge andcomprehension in the disciplines offinancial planning. The programme iscomprised of a broad-based curriculumto prepare the post-graduate studentfor a wide range of financial planningspecialities. The curriculum includesseven topic areas ranging from taxplanning, insurance and risk, retirementplanning to estate planning. Theprogramme emphasises application,analysis and evaluation within eachtopic area as well as the applicationof integrity and ethics in aprofessional environment.Rules of accessApplicants in possession of (a) a BCom(Finance) at UJ or BCom (FinancialPlanning) qualification OR any relatedqualification with a programmespecific minimum revised NQF level 7competency with Financial Planning asa major subject or (b) any Bachelor’sdegree together with the appropriatebridging programme results or relevantexperience in the financial planningindustry. Applicants will be requiredto write a skills-assessment duringNovember and all applications aresubjected to a selection process.An applicant that completed theBridging Programme in Financeand that would like to apply for theBCom Honours (Financial Planning)programme must obtain an averageof 65% for all nine modules, with nomodule with a result of below 55%, inorder to qualify to apply. Applicantsthat completed the BridgingProgramme in Finance MUST alsowrite the skills-assessment.Applicants that do not meet theminimum admission requirements maynot register for the BCom Honours(Financial Planning) programme even ifthey are provisionally accepted basedon the selection process. This is anacademic rule as per the UJ AcademicRegulations (available on the UJwebsite).Meeting the minimum admissionrequirements does not ensureacceptance into the programme asall applicants will be subjected to aselection process as determined by theDepartment of Finance and InvestmentManagement.2

Skills-assessmentopportunityAs part of the selection process foracceptance into the BCom Honours(Financial Planning) programme askills-assessment opportunity hasbeen scheduled for all applicantsthat apply. The skills-assessmentopportunity is one of the tools usedto select applicants for admissioninto the BCom Honours (FinancialPlanning) programme. Applicantsmust please note that the writing ofthe skills-assessment is compulsoryfor all applicants (there will be noexceptions).Applicants that do not write the skillsassessment will not be consideredfor the BCom Honours (FinancialPlanning) programme. Applicantswill NOT be granted a second orspecial opportunity to write the skillsassessment opportunity at a later date.Two dates have been scheduled towrite the skills-assessment opportunity.Applicants may select either date towrite, but may write only once.The skills-assessment opportunity willconsist of multiple choice questions atNQF 7 level, addressing the followingtopics, of relevance relating to theBCom Honours (Financial Planning): Regulatory environment (FAIS andFICA) financial calculations income tax retirement planning estate planning (including trusts,matrimonial property, law ofsuccession)23 investmentsinsurance and riskemployee benefitshealth carebusiness assuranceThe total assessment is 2 hours inlength; please ensure to be at thevenue before the starting time asindicated below.Applicants do NOT need to studyspecifically for the skills-assessmentopportunity as it will assessembedded knowledge of the abovetopics at an undergraduate level.If applicants would like to preparefor the assessment opportunity,they could revise the fundamentalaspects of the above topics coveredin the undergraduate syllabus. As theBCom Honours (Financial Planning)programme is only offered in English,the skills-assessment opportunity canonly be written in English.Applicants must write the skillsassessment for both their first andsecond choice in case they are notsuccessful in either one application.Applicants should bring proof ofidentity (ID or student card), writingmaterials (pencil, sharpener anderaser) and a financial calculator to theassessment opportunity. Applicantsmust know their student number, asonly your student number and surnamewill be written on the answer sheet.Paper will be provided. The details ofthe skills-assessment opportunity areas follows:

Theselection process includes the skillsassessment opportunity which willtake place during November (datesstated above) and is compulsoryfor all applicants. The details of theskills-assessment will be confirmedwith applicants via the e-mail addressprovided on their application (Pleaseensure that you provide the correctemail address when submitting yourapplication). All applicants who wish to applyfor the BCom Honours (FinancialPlanning) programme are required tosubmit, along with their applicationforms, a short written motivation (notlonger than one page) as to why theyplan to enrol for the BCom Honours(Financial Planning) programme, andwhy they should be selected.Applicants that are not successfulin their application for the BComHonours (Financial Planning)programme will be routed to theBridging Programme in Finance.Please consult the informationdocument regarding the BridgingProgramme in Finance.Registration and feesRegistration details for the BComHonours (Financial Planning)programme will be communicatedto successful applicants. Pleasedo not contact the departmentregarding your application statusas the department does not dealwith administration of applicationsand registrations. Application andregistration admin is dealt with by theFaculty of Economic and Financial25Sciences at A Ring 2. CurriculumThe BCom Honours (Financial Planning)programme is presented on a full-timebasis over one year and on a parttime basis over two years. All modulesoffered in the evenings for both fulltime and part-time students. Upon completion of the BCom Honours (FinancialPlanning) the student will be eligible to write the Professional CompetenceExamination (PCE). Once the exam has been passed along with the relevant workexperience the student will qualify to become a Certified Financial Planner (CFP )and become a member of the Financial Planning Institute of Southern Africa (FPI).26

Lectures and examinations will only bepresented in EnglishThe reading of financial books,magazines, daily and weeklynewspapers, e-reading and followingdaily news and business news andevents on television has proven tobe of great value in the past. Thecreation of a reading ethic outside ofthe BCom Honours (Financial Planning)curriculum is of critical importance inbeing a successful student and futureemployee.Lectures and programmesAssessmentLectures will be presented by fulltime academics and occasional guestlecturers. Accepted applicants areexpected to attend lectures regularlyand an attendance register may betaken at each class. The programmeis not suitable for distance learning orcorrespondence applicants.Students will complete a number ofassessments throughout the durationof each module. Assessments maytake the form of written assessmentopportunities (i.e. tests), as well asclass assessments, assignments and/orprojects. A last assessment opportunityin the form of an examination will becompleted at the end of each module.For detailed module outcomes pleaseconsult the Faculty of Economic andFinancial Science 2017 year book oncurricular programmes: fLanguage mediumIn addition to lectures, there might betutorial classes to assist students withthe material covered in the lecture.Details of the tutorial classes will becommunicated by the lecturer at thestart of each module.Prescribed materialThe prescribed textbook for eachmodule will be communicatedto successful applicants in theiracceptance letters. The prescribedtextbook is by no means sufficient topass each specific module. Varioussources of information will have to becombined to pass each module, i.e.formal lectures, class discussions, theInternet (including Ulink) and your ownresearch.27Composition of marksYour studies are your responsibility.Although the lecturers share thatresponsibility with you, you willdetermine how well or poorly youperform in each module and yourdegree. You have to ensure that youprepare for, and attend classes, makeuse of consulting hours and set upappointments to discuss subject matterthat is not clear, study andwrite assessments throughoutthe academic year.

Each module lecturer will publishtheir module mark calculation inthe module work programme at thecommencement of the module onuLink (https://ulink.uj.ac.za/index.html)and in the module work programme.Please note: You may be expected towrite unannounced class tests duringthe semester. Your final module markwill be calculated as follows: A module mark of at least 40%is required for admission to thelast assessment opportunity(examination) Students that do not obtain amodule mark of 40% and above,will not be allowed to write the lastassessment opportunity.Assessment activities such aswritten assessments (i.e. tests), classassessments, assignments, and/orprojects will constitute the modulemark, as outlined above.Application proceduresApplications for the 2017 academicyear will close on 31 October 2016. Theselection process will take place duringNovember and students will be advisedof the outcome during December.No late application will beconsidered. Each student needs tosubmit a completed application formvia the UJ online application portalavailable at:http://www.uj.ac.za/apply Module marks will count 50%towards the final mark The last assessment will carry aweighting of 50% towards the finalmodule mark A final mark for each module of 50%or above must be achieved to passa module A student passes a module withdistinction if he/she obtains a finalmark of at least 75%If a combined weighted average of75% is obtained for all modules in theBCom Honours (Financial Planning)programme, the degree will beawarded with distinction.28

Online applications are preferred,however manual applications willalso be considered. Certified copy of your Grade 12(matric) certificate; Certified copy of an officialacademic record and certificateof conduct issued by yourundergraduate university (if youare currently completing yourundergraduate studies, then yourmost recent academic record). Theacademic record and certificate ofconduct submitted MUST includeall courses taken by a prospectivestudent (i.e. not only a list of coursespassed). Failure to submit a full listof courses taken may disqualify aprospective student; Certified copy of your degreecertificate (if you have alreadycompleted your undergraduatedegree); A short written motivation as to whyyou think you should be selectedfor the BCom Honours (FinancialPlanning) programme;All prospective applicants that wishto enroll for the BCom Honours(Financial Planning) MUST submit thefollowing documents before the abovedeadlines: Certified copy of identity document(or passport if foreign student); SAQA evaluations certificate if yourhighest academic qualification wasnot obtained at a South Africanuniversity;29
