(See PM Plus Teachers’ Guide,Magenta) Transition from Starters Two to PM Story Books is easedby the overlapping high frequency words and sentencestructures. The familiar Here is a I am Herecomes Look at said the reappear. The differenceis that these constructions are no longer repeated on everypage. PM Story Books cannot be ‘read’ from oral memory, but demand close attention to print. Throughout the PMs the meaningful illustrations supportthe text, and help children interpret each story. Several families and animal characters are introduced atLevel 3 and will recur at later levels: Sam and her dogBingo; Jack and Billy; Kate, James and Nick (Nicola); KittyCat; Little Chimp; Ben. The 18 Story Books at Level 3 use the same pool of 20 highfrequency words. For PM Software for Red Level see page 2518Key to the PMs

Because of this children candiscuss each story and make predictions. PM Story Booksare stories with satisfying endings. When a book is selected for Guided Reading childrenshould already be able to read it with 90% accuracy. After alittle practice they should be able to read with fullunderstanding, and 95–100% accuracy. The baby owlsPM Story Books Each PM Story Book uses one or two interest words, triggered by the illustrations. Many belong to one bookonly: sausage, owls, daisy, lamb, tower, puppy. The wordsthat matter are the high frequency words which arerepeated many times in book after book.Practice with selected PM Starters and PM Readalongs (seepage 21) will help children master the words needed forsuccessful reading at this level. Helpful links with the PM Alphabet Starters and Blends arelisted, too. By the end of Green Level, every letter anddigraph and almost every blend will have been met inchildren’s reading and made familiar by practice in context. For PM Software for Red Level see page 2520Key to the PMs

Some, likeBaby Bear, are found in both PM Plus and the PM StoryBooks. Bingo’s Ice Cream is the fourth story about Sam andher dog Bingo. For a complete list of characters and thestories where they appear, see page 93. About 50 high frequency words should be known by theend of Red Level. Intense and enjoyable repetition in thePM Readalongs (listed on page 11) will help children readthem with confidence. These same high frequency wordsare repeated again and again in the 18 Story Books atLevel 5, allowing children to master them. Prediction skills should be fostered in Guided Reading, e.g.‘In Bingo’s Ice Cream Sam has lost her ice cream (page 9) what do you think will happen to it? Will Sam getanother one?’ Because all PM Story Books have traditional story structurethey have the built-in tension that allows children to actthem out e.g. A home for Little Teddy. The re-readingthat follows dramatisation is full of insights. For PM Software for Red Level see page 2522Key to the PMs

They are child-centred books, towhich children can relate. For PM Software for Yellow Level see page 3328Key to the PMs Warmth and emotional sensitivity are built in to the PMStory Books. Children are never laughed at or ‘put down’,but treated as people who find ways to solve the problemsthey meet in their lives. Sam Goes to School shows a childovercoming fear. A Crocodile and a Whale shows conflictresolution. Mother’s Day shows effort rewarded. Children who self-correct demonstrate that they knowreading should make sense, and that grapho-phonic cuesshould match. Self-correction is a sign of getting it alltogether. The ability to monitor one’s own reading and selfcorrect can flourish only if texts carry meaning. Meaningtherefore shapes every story, every page and every line ofthe PM Story Books. The language structures are thosethat children can control and understand, and this, too, helps self-correction. Verse is meant to be spoken aloud. In Guided Readingteachers should model verse, helping children to enjoy therhythm. Hermit Crab includes a four-line verse. All PMAlphabet Starters and Blends include alliterative rhymes foraural enjoyment. Toys and Play and The Sun, the Wind andthe Rain are verse books matched to children’s early-readingskills. The PM Readalongs are verses and songs for sharing.

The strong plotsinclude chains of cause and effect and so encourageprediction. Because the pages are linked to each other bylogic, children are able to use reasoning skills, and selfcorrection is more likely to develop. Grapho-phonic cluesand meaning can be checked against each other. New high frequency words are introduced slowly andsteadily, and then recur in many books. Children meetthem often enough to achieve mastery. For example, make(and all of its forms) introduced in Magpie’s baking day andSally’s friends appears 37 times at Blue Level. And childrenwho enjoy the PM Readalongs will have absorbed manyother ‘new’ words before they begin Blue Level, e.g. whofrom Punchinello. Nature books in the PMs are accurate. Books abouthedgehogs, owls, lizards, kingfishers, hippos, seagulls, chimpanzees, dinosaurs, hermit crabs, sparrows and nowthe shelduck (paradise duck) in The duck with a brokenwing can help awaken children’s interest in the naturalworld. Even fantasy links with fact; baby bears do climbtrees and ducklings do eat bugs for breakfast! For PM Software for Blue Level see page 4134Key to the PMs
