Suggestions for Readingsfrom Holy Scripturesfor Funerals inThe Episcopal ChurchThe liturgy for the dead is an Easter liturgy. It finds all its meaning in the resurrection. BecauseJesus was raised from the dead, we, too, shall be raised. The liturgy, therefore, is characterized by joy, in the certainty that “neither death, nor life, norangels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, noranything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.’’This joy, however, does not make human grief unchristian. The very love we have for each other inChrist brings deep sorrow when we are parted by death. Jesus himself wept at the grave of his friend. So, while we rejoice that one we love has entered into the nearer presence of our Lord, we sorrow insympathy with those who mourn.-1-

Hebrew ScriptureOption A –- Proverbs 31 (verses may be selected)In praise of a good womanA Reading from the Book of Proverbs.10A capable wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels. The heart of her husband trusts in her, and he will have no lack of gain.12She does him good, and not harm, all the days of her life.13She seeks wool and flax, and works with willing hands.14She is like the ships of the merchant, she brings her food from far away.15She rises while it is still night and provides food for her household and tasks for herservant-girls.16She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.17She girds herself with strength, and makes her arms strong.18She perceives that her merchandise is profitable. Her lamp does not go out at night.19She puts her hands to the distaff, and her hands hold the spindle.20She opens her hand to the poor, and reaches out her hands to the needy.21She is not afraid for her household when it snows, for all her household are clothed incrimson.22She makes herself coverings; her clothing is fine linen and purple.23Her husband is known in the city gates, taking his seat among the elders of the land.24She makes linen garments and sells them; she supplies the merchant with sashes.25Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.26She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.27She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.28Her children rise up and call her happy; her husband too, and he praises her:29“Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.”30Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to bepraised.31Give her a share in the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the citygates.11The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.-2-

Hebrew ScriptureOption B –- Isaiah 25:6-9He will swallow up death foreverA Reading from the Prophet Isaiah.6On this mountainthe LORD of hosts will make for all peoplesa feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wines,of rich food filled with marrow, of well-aged wines strained clear.7And he will destroy on this mountainthe shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations;he will swallow up death forever.8Then the Lord GODwill wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his peoplehe will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken.9It will be said on that day,“Lo, this is our God;we have waited for him, so that he might save us.This is the LORD for whom we have waited;let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.”The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.-3-

Hebrew ScriptureOption C –- Isaiah 40:28-31The Lord is an everlasting GodA Reading from the Prophet Isaiah.28Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God,the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understandingis unsearchable. 29He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the powerless. 30 Evenyouths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; 31but those who waitfor the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, theyshall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.-4-

Hebrew ScriptureOption E –- Lamentations 3:22-26, 31-33The LORD is good to those who wait for himA Reading from the Book of Lamentations.22The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end;23they are new every morning;great is your faithfulness.24“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul,“therefore I will hope in him.”25The LORD is good to those who wait for him,to the soul that seeks him.26It is good that one should wait quietlyfor the salvation of the LORD .31For the LORD will not reject forever.Although he causes grief, he will have compassionaccording to the abundance of his steadfast love;33for he does not willingly afflict or grieve anyone.32The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.-6-

Hebrew ScriptureOption F –- Wisdom 3:1-5, 9The souls of the righteous are in the hands of GodA Reading from the Book of the Wisdom of Solomon.1The souls of the righteous are in the hands of God,and no torment will ever touch them.2In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster,3and their going from us to be their destruction;but they are at peace.4For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality.5Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested themand found them worthy of himself;9Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because mercy and grace are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.-7-

Hebrew ScriptureOption G –- Wisdom 4:7-9, 13-15Age is not length of timeA Reading from the Book of the Wisdom of Solomon.7But the righteous, though they die early, will be at rest. 8 For old age is nothonored for length of time, or measured by number of years; 9 but understanding isgray hair for anyone, and a blameless life is ripe old age.13Being perfected in a short time, they fulfilled long years; 14 for their soulswere pleasing to the Lord, therefore he took them quickly from the midst of15wickedness.Yet peoples saw and did not understand, or take such a thingto heart, that God’s grace and mercy are with his elect, and that he watches overhis holy ones. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.-8-

Hebrew ScriptureOption H –- Job 19:21-27aI know that my Redeemer livesA Reading from the Book of Job.21Have pity on me, have pity on me, O you my friends, for the hand of God has touched me!22Why do you, like God, pursue me,never satisfied with my flesh?23O that my words were written down!O that they were inscribed in a book!24O that with an iron pen and with leadthey were engraved on a rock forever!25For I know that my Redeemer lives, and that at the last he will stand upon the earth;26and after my skin has been thus destroyed, then in my flesh I shall see God,27whom I shall see on my side, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.-9-

Hebrew ScriptureOption I –- Ecclesiastes 3:1-8For everything there is a seasonA Reading from Ecclesiastes.1For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:2a time to be born, and a time to die;a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;3a time to kill, and a time to heal;a time to break down, and a time to build up;4a time to weep, and a time to laugh;a time to mourn, and a time to dance;5a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;6a time to seek, and a time to lose;a time to keep, and a time to throw away;7a time to tear, and a time to sew;a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;8a time to love, and a time to hate;a time for war, and a time for peace. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.- 10 -

And I was held spellbound.44Then I asked an angel, “Who are these, my lord?” 45 He answered and said tome, “These are they who have put off mortal clothing and have put on theimmortal, and have confessed the name of God. Now they are being crowned, and receive palms.” 46 Then I said to the angel, “Who is that young man who isplacing crowns on them and putting palms in their hands?” 47 He answered andsaid to me, “He is the Son of God, whom they confessed in the world.” So Ibegan to praise the name of the Lord. 48 Then the angel said to me, “Go, tell mypeople how great and how many are the wonders of the Lord God that you haveseen.”The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.- 11 -

Christian LettersOption A –- Romans 6:3-4, 8-9Dead to sin but alive in ChristA Reading from Paul’s Letter to the Church in Rome.3Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptizedinto his death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just asChrist was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness oflife.8But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. 9We knowthat Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion overhim. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.- 12 -

Christian LettersOption B –- Romans 8:14-19, 34-35, 37-39The glory that shall be revealedA Reading from Paul’s Letter to the Church in Rome.14All who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15 For you did not receive aspirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry,“Abba! Father!” 16 it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children ofGod, 17 and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ — if, in fact, wesuffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.18I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the gloryabout to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of thechildren of God.34Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the righthand of God, who indeed intercedes for us.35Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution,or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.38For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will beable to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.- 13 -

Christian LettersOption C –- 1 Corinthians 13Faith, hope and love remainA Reading from Paul’s First Letter to the Church in Corinth.1If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, Iam a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. 2 And if I have prophetic powers, andunderstand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to removemountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. 3If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gainnothing.4Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant 5or rude. Itdoes not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; 6it does not rejoice inwrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. 7It bears all things, believes all things, hopesall things, endures all things.8Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as fortongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. 9For we knowonly in part, and we prophesy only in part; 10but when the complete comes, thepartial will come to an end. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought likea child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childishways. 12For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now Iknow only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. 13 Andnow faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.- 14 -

Christian LettersOption D –- 1 Corinthians 15:12-19The assurance of a resurrectionA Reading from Paul’s First Letter to the Church in Corinth.12Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some ofyou say there is no resurrection of the dead? 13If there is no resurrection of thedead, then Christ has not been raised; 14 and if Christ has not been raised, then ourproclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. 15 We are evenfound to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raisedChrist—whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16For if thedead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. 17If Christ has not beenraised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18Then those also whohave died in Christ have perished. 19If for this life only we have hoped in Christ,we are of all people most to be pitied. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.- 15 -

Christian LettersOption E –- 1 Corinthians 15:20-26, 35-38, 42-44, 53-58The imperishable bodyA Reading from Paul’s First Letter to the Church in Corinth.20In fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have died. 21 Forsince death came through a human being, the resurrection of the dead has also come through ahuman being; 22 for as all die in Adam, so all will be made alive in Christ. 23 But each in his ownorder: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. 24 Then comes theend, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, after he has destroyed every ruler andevery authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.26The last enemy to be destroyed is death.35But someone will ask, “How are the dead raised? With what kind of body do theycome?” 36 Fool! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies. 37 And as for what yousow, you do not sow the body that is to be, but a bare seed, perhaps of wheat or of some othergrain. 38 But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body.42So it is with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable, what is raised isimperishable. 43 It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised inpower. 44 It is sown a physical body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual body.53For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortal body must put onimmortality. 54 When this perishable body puts on imperishability, and this mortal body putson immortality, then the saying that is written will be fulfilled: “Death has been swallowed upin victory.” 55 “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” 56 The sting ofdeath is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victorythrough our Lord Jesus Christ.58Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.- 16 -

Christian LettersOption F –- 1 Corinthians 15:51-58Our resurrectionA Reading from Paul’s First Letter to the Church in Corinth.51Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all bechanged, 52in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For thetrumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will bechanged. 53For this perishable body must put on imperishability, and this mortalbody must put on immortality. 54When this perishable body puts onimperishability, and this mortal body puts on immortality, then the saying that iswritten will be fulfilled: ‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.’ 55‘Where, Odeath, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?’ 56The sting of death is sin,and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victorythrough our Lord Jesus Christ.58Therefore, my beloved, be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in thework of the Lord, because you know that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.- 17 -

Christian LettersOption G –- 2 Corinthians 1:3-5Consolation in ChristA Reading from Paul’s Second Letter to the Church in Corinth.3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father ofmercies and the God of all consolation, 4who consoles us in all our affliction, sothat we may be able to console those who are in any affliction with theconsolation with which we ourselves are consoled by God. 5For just as thesufferings of Christ are abundant for us, so also our consolation is abundantthrough Christ. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.- 18 -

Christian LettersOption H –- 2 Corinthians 4:7-14Perplexed but not in despairA Reading from Paul’s Second Letter to the Church in Corinth.7But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear thatthis extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us.8We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not drivento despair; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;10always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may alsobe made visible in our bodies. 11For while we live, we are always being given up todeath for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortalflesh. 12 So death is at work in us, but life in you. 13But just as we have the samespirit of faith that is in accordance with scripture—‘I believed, and so I spoke’ —we also believe, and so we speak, 14because we know that the one who raised theLord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus, and will bring us with you into hispresence. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.- 19 -

Christian LettersOption I –- 2 Corinthians 4:16 - 5:9What cannot be seen is eternalA Reading from Paul’s Second Letter to the Church in Corinth.16We do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature isbeing renewed day by day. 17 For this slight momentary affliction is preparing us for an eternalweight of glory beyond all measure, 18 because we look not at what can be seen but at whatcannot be seen; for what can be seen is temporary, but what cannot be seen is eternal.5:1For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God,a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this tent we groan, longing to beclothed with our heavenly dwelling – 3 if indeed, when we have taken it off we will not be foundnaked. 4 For while we are still in this tent, we groan under our burden, because we wish not tobe unclothed but to be further clothed, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. 5He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.6So we are always confident; even though we know that while we are at home in the bodywe are away from the Lord – 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 Yes, we do have confidence, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So whether we areat home or away, we make it our aim to please him.The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.- 20 -

Christian LettersOption J –- Philippians 3:8-21Our citizenship is in heaven.A Reading from the Letter to the Church in Philippi.8I regard everything as loss because of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus myLord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things, and I regard them as rubbish, in orderthat I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comesfrom the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based onfaith. 10I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferingsby becoming like him in his death, 11if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the dead.12Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to makeit my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Beloved, I do not consider that I havemade it my own; but this one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward towhat lies ahead, 14I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in ChristJesus.15Let those of us then who are mature be of the same mind; and if you think differentlyabout anything, this too God will reveal to you. 16Only let us hold fast to what we haveattained.17Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those who live according to theexample you have in us. 18For many live as enemies of the cross of Christ; I have often told youof them, and now I tell you even with tears. 19 Their end is destruction; their god is the belly; andtheir glory is in their shame; their minds are set on earthly things. 20 But our citizenship is inheaven, and it is from there that we are expecting a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ. 21He willtransform the body of our humiliation that it may be conformed to the body of his glory, by thepower that also enables him to make all things subject to himself. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.- 21 -

Christian LettersOption K –- Philippians 3:20 — 4:1, 4-7Rejoice in the LordA Reading from the Letter to the Church in Philippi.20But our citizenship is in heaven, and it is from there that we are expecting aSavior, the Lord Jesus Christ. 21He will transform the body of our humiliation thatit may be conformed to the body of his glory, by the power that also enables himto make all things subject to himself.4:1Therefore, my brothers and sisters, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm in the Lord in this way, my beloved.4Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice. 5 Let your gentleness beknown to everyone. The Lord is near. 6 Do not worry about anything, but ineverything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests bemade known to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.- 22 -

Christian LettersOption L –- 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18Raised with JesusA Reading from the First Letter to the Church in Thessalonica.13But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who havedied, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 14For since we believe thatJesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died.15For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left untilthe coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died. 16For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, willdescend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive, who areleft, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so wewill be with the Lord forever. 18Therefore encourage one another with these words. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.- 23 -

Christian LettersOption M –- 1 Peter 1:3-9A living hopeA Reading from the First Letter of Peter.3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to ourGod forever and ever! Amen.13Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, “Who are these, robed in white, and wherehave they come from?”14I said to him, “Sir, you are the one that knows.”Then he said to me, “These are they who have come out of the great ordeal; they havewashed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.15For this reason they are before the throne of God,and worship him day and night within his temple, and the one who is seated on the throne will shelter them.16They will hunger no more, and thirst no more;the sun will not strike them, nor any scorching heat;17for the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.- 26 -
