The basicunit consists of a fan, heating and/orcooling coils, filters, and dampers. The unit may also include a widevariety of other modules. Seeproduct catalog CLCH-PRC003-ENfor a list of available modules. Each M-Series module is providedwith a module nameplate/label (seeFigure 1), which identifies the type ofmodule, the module’s positionwithin the unit, customer tagginginformation, the module serialnumber, and the service modelnumber. Refer to the modulenameplate to ensure properplacement of the modules duringassembly.Protecting theEnvironmentWorld environmental scientists haveconcluded, based on the bestcurrently available evidence, thatozone in our upper atmosphere isbeing reduced due to the release ofCFC (chlorofluorocarbon) fullyhalogenated compounds.and hydrogen) refrigerants to theatmosphere resulting frominstallation, operation, routinemaintenance, or major service onthis equipment. Always act in aresponsible manner to conserverefrigerants for continued use evenwhen acceptable alternatives areavailable.Refrigerant used in any type of airconditioning or refrigeratingequipment should be recovered forreuse, recovered and/or recycled forreuse, reprocessed (reclaimed), orproperly destroyed, whenever it isremoved from equipment. Neverrelease it to the atmosphere!Trane urges that all HVAC servicersworking on Trane equipment, or anymanufacturer’s products, makeevery effort to eliminate, if possible,or vigorously reduce the emission ofCFC, HCFC (halocarbon that containsfluorine, chlorine, carbon, andhydrogen), and HFC (halocarbonthat contains only fluorine, carbon,Figure 1. GeneralInformationOperatingEnvironmentWhen considering the placement ofthe M-Series air handler, it isimportant to consider the operatingenvironment. The acceptableambient temperature range for unitoperation is -40ºF to 140ºF (-40ºC to60ºC).For heating applications, a specialmotor may be required to withstandthe higher temperatures. Motorswith Class B insulation areacceptable for ambienttemperatures up to 104º F, whilemotors with Class F insulation canwithstand ambient temperatures to 140º F (60º C).Note: The customer should provideadequate freeze protection for thecoils. See the “Coil Winterization”section on page 63 for moreinformation.ControlsWiring Sizes andConnectionsThere are no penetrations into theM-Series air handler for any fieldprovided wiring or device. Beforeinstallation, consider overall unitserviceability and accessibilitybefore mounting, running wires(power), making cabinetpenetrations, or mounting anycomponents to the module cabinet.CLCH-SVX03C-ENWiring to M-Series units must beprovided by the installer and mustcomply with all national and localelectrical codes. The fan motornameplate includes a wiringdiagram. If there are any questionsconcerning the wiring of the motor,be sure to write down theinformation from the motornameplate and contact your localfan motor manufacturerrepresentative for assistance. For a more in-depth understandingof controls, refer to the followingmanuals:Factory-Mounted Controls For factory-configured AH540/AH541 controllers,CNT-SVX05B-EN For programmable MP580controllers, CNT-SVP01A-EN For hardware installation,CNT-SVN01A-EN For Danfoss VFD,TR1-SVX10A-EN For universal programmablecontrol modules (UPCMs):Small items that cannot be factorymounted will ship inside the controlenclosures. Larger items may shipinside the fan module.Note: All control valves ship directlyto the “ship-to address” from thevendor unless another address isgiven on the Trane sales order. All factory-mounted control systems(controls that are factory-wired to aunit controller or termination strip)ordered without starters or variablefrequency drives (VFDs) areprovided with line to 24 Vac controltransformers mounted and wired inthe auxiliary control panel. Thecustomer must provide 120 Vaccontrol power, 50/60 Hz, typically3 amps for unit sizes 3 to 57 and5 amps for unit sizes 66 to 120. Adedicated 15-amp circuit isrecommended.Factory-mounted control systemsordered with factory-mountedstarters or VFDs are supplied withline to 24 Vac control transformers. No additional power wiring isrequired.–EMTX-PG-5–EMTX-IN-22ACustom OptionsFor inquiries about our standardcustom options, contact your localTrane sales engineer, or refer to thefollowing manuals: Gas heat - CLCH-SVX04B-EN Energy wheels CLCH-SVX02C-EN LJ Wing Coils - installationmanuals available fromwww.ljwing.com –IOM-VIFB-3–IOM-IFB-2RHumidifiers - installation manualavailable fromwww.armstrong-intl.com–Armstrong Bulletin No. 560-G5

General InformationUltraviolet (UV)GermicidalIrradiation Lights(optional)The United States EnvironmentalProtection Agency (EPA) believesthat molds and bacteria insidebuildings have the potential to causehealth problems in sensitiveindividuals. If specified, Traneprovides ultraviolet lights (UV-C) asa factory-engineered and installedoption in select commercial airhandling products for the purpose ofreducing microbiological growth(mold and bacteria) within theequipment. When factory provided, polymer materials that aresusceptible to deterioration by theUV-C light will be substituted orshielded from direct exposure to thelight. In addition, UV-C radiation candamage human tissue, namely eyesand skin. To reduce the potential forinadvertent exposure to the lights byoperating and maintenancepersonnel, electrical interlocks thatautomatically disconnect power tothe lights are provided at all unitentry points to equipment wherelights are located.6 WARNINGEquipment Damage FromUltraviolet (UV) Lights!Trane does not recommend fieldinstallation of ultraviolet lights in itsair handling equipment for theintended purpose of improvingindoor air quality. High intensity Cband ultraviolet light is known toseverely damage polymer (plastic)materials and poses a personalsafety risk to anyone exposed to thelight without proper personalprotective equipment (could causedamage to eyes and skin). Polymermaterials commonly found in HVACequipment that may be susceptibleinclude insulation on electricalwiring, fan belts, thermal insulation, various fasteners and bushings.Degradation of these materials canresult in serious damage to theequipment.Trane accepts no responsibility forthe performance or operation of ourair handling equipment in whichultraviolet devices were installedoutside of the Trane factory.CLCH-SVX03C-EN

Pre-InstallationChecklistsM-Series Climate Changer airhandlers can ship as individualmodules, module subassemblies, ora complete air handler. Unit sizes3 to 57 may have a base rail (alsocalled an external support kit). Unitsizes 66 to 120 ship on an integralbase rail. Modules shipped without abase rail are securely fastened to awooden skid using 4-inch mountinglegs for ease of handling. No skid isprovided on units with base rails.Trane recommends leaving unitsand accessories, such as filter boxesand control devices, in theirshipping packages/skids forprotection and ease of handling untilinstallation.M-Series air handler sizes 3 to 57ship in subassemblies if the totallength of the unit exceeds 98 inches,or if the total weight exceeds thelimits as calculated using Table 2 onpage 10, Table 3 on page 11, andTable 5 on page 12. If an optionalfactory base rail and standardfactory shipping splits were ordered, each subassembly will ship on itsown base rail as standard. If anoptional factory base rail andminimum factory shipping splitswere ordered, the base rail will shipseparate from each subassembly.M-Series air handler sizes 66 to 120ship in subassemblies if the totallength of the unit exceeds102 inches, or if the total weightexceeds 4,300 pounds.
