You’ll see stencils in home décor, packaging, jewelry, graphic design, clothing, accessories, and more. Mixed-media andgraffiti artists are taking stenciling to the level of fine art, and we have the graffiti industry tothank for innovative pressurized paint products, custom spray caps, and trendy stencils. Butyou can also create your own stencils, and one of the many advantages of cutting your own isbeing able to reproduce your favorite motifs and original designs in any size you want(see “Cutting Stencils”).stencil art making: 3 free stenciling tutorials how to make stencils F W Media, Inc.clothpaperscissors.com1

Figure 3m at e r i a l s Protected work surface Project substrate (Various papersfrom poster board to fine watercolorpaper, decorative papers, sturdybook pages, fabrics, and canvas.Consider walls, tabletops, windowsand doors as surfaces.)Figure 2Currently my preference in stencilingis for bold silhouettes and large-scalemotifs. This graphic contemporary stylecomes to life on solid backgrounds, or itcan serve as a strong focal point againstthose gorgeous, layered backgroundsso essential to mixed-media artists.Using sprays, you can achieve a soft,watercolor-like edge, making eachstenciled image unique. Innovative resisttechniques using sprays such as gessoand clear acrylic also ensure that no twodesigns are identical that is, unless youwant them to be.With the help of some fun and whimsicalChinese lanterns, I have demonstratedthree basic techniques here: stenciling, masking, and layering.the basicsstencilingIn its simplest form, stenciling refers toapplying color inside a cut-out shape, the shape being the outline of an image. The stencil is taped (with removeabletape) or held in place, and paint isapplied within the cutout. Stencilsenable you to duplicate a design, overand over. In Figure 1, I repeated thelantern shape, applying black spray paintthrough the stencil to create a pleasingcomposition, and added the tassels witha black marker.maskingUsing a mask is quite simple. Shapesare arranged on top of the backgroundstencil art making: 3 free stenciling tutorials how to make stencils F W Media, Inc. Stencil(s), including the inside shape Double-sided removable tape Colorants (spray paint, spray mists, acrylic paints)paper or fabric, taped in place withremoveable tape, and paint is sprayedlightly over each shape, leaving some ofthe surrounding backgroundpaper/fabric unpainted. The subtleshading around the lanterns inFigure 2 was created by holding thespray can about 10" above the surface. Iused a foil marker to draw the lines fromthe lanterns to the top of the page.layeringLayering is just as the word implies.More than one stencil is used to createan image. One stencil is taped inposition and paint is applied throughthe opening. Next, a smaller stencil istaped to the back of the original stencil, the stencil is placed back in its originalposition, and paint is applied again, oftenclothpaperscissors.com2

using a different and/or contrastingcolor. In Figure 3, I used spray mists forthe layers and added details with a blackmarker. With just this one stencil you haveshapes within shapes to design with. Cutyour own stencil and mask now, usingthe template provided below.going further Try each part separately or in variouscombinations. The paisley motif is timeless andcurrently grabs our attention on textiles, wallpaper, clothing, and accessories.Design possibilities abound, and thisshape is perfect for adding details andsurface texture, whether you’re workingwith fabric or paper (or both). Figure 1Figure 2iam a big fan of the local farmers’ market, and images of gorgeous fruits andvegetables often find their way into my art. When I wander the stalls I’m notonly thinking of dinner, I’m also wondering if that plump pear or juicy tomato mightpause and pose for me before finding its way into the sauce or salad.Last year I was asked by the manager ofour local farmers’ market to be a judgeat the fall pumpkin-carving festival. Iwanted to have a topical t-shirt to wearso I carved up an E-Z Cut block andused acetate to create a stencil for colorblocking, and a fun farmers’ marketseries was born. You can use carved stamp blocks to printon all kinds of surfaces. I’ve printed onwood, paper for cards, fabric-paper, andI’ve printed on fabric to make banners, flags, and t-shirts.directionspreparing thestamps and stencilsnote: The basic steps are the same nomatter what substrate you use.1.2.Place the E-Z Cut on a piece of paperand trace around the block with apencil. Draw your image within thetraced shape. When you have thedesign you want, draw it directlyonto the carving block with pencil ortransfer the design to the block withtransfer paper. (Figure 1)Carve the block with the lino-cuttingtool, remembering that what you carveaway will be white and the areas youleave will print. choosingpaints U se acrylic paint for wood. You canuse regular acrylic paint for stencilareas, but when rolling paint ontoa stamp, use open acrylics to allowtime to roll on the paint and printbefore the paint dries. Alternatively, you can put a drying retardant intoregular acrylics to slow the dryingtime. F or paper projects, use acrylicpaints or printmaking ink. Stamppads work well for printing smallimages, too. F or fabric, use acrylic paint if youaren’t going to wash the item, oruse fabric paints and heat-set theitem according to the manufacturer’sinstructions before washing.create the background color-blockstencil, which will also be used as aguide for the stamp. (Figure 3)tip: Carve away a little at a timeand then do a preview print onto paper tosee what you have. You can always carveaway more, but you can’t put it back.6.3.Print the completed block ontopaper and use the printed imageto determine what you want yourstencil to look like.4.Place the printed image under theglass plate, put the sheet of acetateon top of the glass, and cut thecentral image out of the acetate withthe heat pen or craft knife. iused to think of myself as a watercolorist. I had the idea that you weresupposed to specialize in a certain technique and label yourself accordingly.m at e r i a l s Hardboard panel, flat or cradledwith sides (I use Ampersand Gessobord ; Masonite sealed withgesso is another option.)But after working for a large collaborative art studio that produced a varietyof decorative art for furniture stores, department stores, and interior designers,I quickly let go of my self-imposed label. Provided with all of the materials, supplies, and studio space I needed and a task to be as innovative as I could, Idid a lot of experimenting and began thinking of myself as simply an artist. Fromthat point on, I have enjoyed taking traditional techniques in new directions. My most recent paintings incorporate arichly textured surface, many layers ofpaint, simple shapes, and colored pencilhighlights. The shapes can be abstractor realistic, but they should besilhouettes without a lot of detail.3.preparingthe surfaceI make my textured paintings onhardboard panels like Masonite orGessobord. The hard surface holds upwell to the texture I apply.I like to use Gessobord because it isalready primed. If you use an unprimedsurface, such as Masonite, it will benecessary to seal it with a few coats ofgesso before beginning your painting. If you are using a cradled Gessobord (aboard with sides), cover the sides withpainter’s masking tape to protect themand keep them clean.applyingtexture1.2.Completely cover the paintingsurface with strips of 3" maskingtape, each strip touching the next sothat the entire surface is covered.Using a piece of tracing paper thesame size as your surface, make4.5.6.Turn the drawing over and trace overthe lines on the back with a graphitestick.
