POSTGRADUATE COURSEWORK PROGRAMSPublic Health ProgramMaster of Public HealthThe Master of Public Health (MPH)is widely recognised as essentialfor a career in population health. Itprovides preparation for education,research and service in all aspects ofpublic health. Many of our graduatesoccupy key positions in healthservices and universities in Australiaand other regions in the Asia-Pacific.The program includes study inepidemiology, statistics, quantitativeand qualitative research methods,health promotion, health policy andhealth services management, as wellas other topical public health issues.Within the MPH, a research projectcan be undertaken as a project, andif combined with a credit average willbe considered for entry into the PhDprogram. The Program Director forthe Public Health program is A/ProfGlenda Lawrence, Associate Dean ofPostgraduate Coursework.Specialisation in InfectiousDiseases Epidemiology andControlCore competencies includeunderstanding the different modesof disease transmission, principlesand practice of disease surveillance,outbreak investigation processes andmethods to control infectious diseases.Infectious Diseases Epidemiologyand Control is a key focus of researchand practice within public health anda key area of research and expertisewithin the School. The teachersin the course include national andinternational leaders in the field ofinfectious diseases control, includingProf Raina MacIntyre. The stream isled by Dr James Wood who is a leaderin mathematical modelling of infectiousdiseases, and an expert in vaccinepreventable diseases.Public Health Specialisations There is the option to enrolin a general Master of PublicHealth program or in one of fivespecialisation streams: InfectiousDiseasesEpidemiology and Control International HealthPromotion AboriginalInternational and global health is anincreasingly important component ofpublic health. This specialisation aimsto ensure that participants are familiarwith the global distribution of healthand disease, and know about thepublic health interventions availableto tackle them, and understand theirsocial and economic determinants.Students will learn about the data,the actors, the contexts and theprocesses through which globalhealth policies are formulated andpromoted, and the impact of globalHealth andWellbeing PrimarySpecialisation in InternationalHealthHealthHealth CareThese specialisations aredesigned to meet the needs ofspecific career tracks, and the areaof specialisation appears on thetestamur. They allow students tofocus their studies in areas wherethey seek a career.For those seeking to experienceresearch, a small elective researchproject can be undertaken aspart of any coursework Mastersprogram and is one of the prerequisites to enter a PhD program.

The learning and teachingmethods are designed to stimulatetransformational learning that willenhance the application of publichealth skills and principles to virtuallyany health or social discipline.This stream is targeted for publichealth students with an interest inAboriginal and Torres Strait Islanderhealth generally and for thoseseeking to enhance the capacityof the primary health care, publichealth, allied health, communitydevelopment and the broader sectorworkforce to cohesively address thephysical, psychosocial, cultural andenvironmental determinants of healthand wellbeing of Indigenous and nonIndigenous Australians. It is taught byleaders in Aboriginal and Torres StraitIslander health within the Murru MariIndigenous Health Unit, and led byProf Lisa Jackson Pulver.Specialisation in PrimaryHealth CarePrimary health care seeks to extendthe first level of health system fromsick care to the development ofhealth. This specialisation is offeredby the School in collaboration withthe Centre for Primary Health Careand Equity. It equips students to workas clinicians and managers and tocontribute and respond to currentdevelopments in primary healthcare services in Australia. Primaryhealth care is recognised as a criticalcomponent of any health service, withthe potential to improve the efficiencyand effectiveness of the wholehealth system. This specialisation issuitable for all those with an interestin primary health care includingprimary health care professionals,managers, project officers, plannersand policy makers. UNSW hosts oneof the largest groupings of academicprimary care practitioners in Australia,including Prof Mark Harris who leadsthis specialisation.

International Public HealthProgramThe Master of International PublicHealth (MIPH) equips students withthe knowledge and competenciesto contribute to disease control andhealth promotion across a range ofpopulations and countries. Theseextend from least developed andpost-conflict countries, still afflictedby infection and malnutrition;through middle income countries,experiencing increases incardiovascular disease, cancer andinjuries, in addition to the persistenceof a communicable and undernutrition disease burden; to moredeveloped countries where the majorchallenges are non-communicabledisease, although threats frominfectious disease persist.The Master of International PublicHealth is recognised as a soughtafter qualification in internationalhealth. Many graduates of the MIPHor similar programs have foundemployment with international aidorganisations. We attract bothdomestic and international students,and studying with a rich and diverseinternational student cohort, hasenhanced the experience of ourgraduates.This degree was established byProf Richard Taylor, who leads thisprogram using a highly successfulmodel he designed and establishedin Australia.Flexible Delivery Our postgraduate courseworkprograms can be taken eitherfull-time or part-time.
