Judges/Scorers/ReboundersJudges, scorers and rebounders will be selected by theFree Throw Championship chairman at the councillevel, by the district deputy at the district level, and bythe state deputy at the regional and state levels. Therecommended minimum is one judge, two scorers and arebounder at each basket. It is recommended thatvolunteer parents be utilized in age groups other thanthe group(s) in which their child (children) competes.The judge will ensure that each participant receives theproper warm-up tosses and will point out any foulshooting violations (see Scoring section). All questionswill be resolved by the judges and Free ThrowChampionship chairman. Scorers should refer to thescoring instructions included on the entry form/scoresheet. The rebounder will catch the ball and give to thenext contestant.ScoringNormal rules of basketball regarding free throws applyfor all levels of competition. Free Throw violationsinclude stepping on or over the line prior to the ballreaching the rim, or shots rebounding off the “out ofbounds” basket support and equipment. Scorers shouldrecord baskets made and missed on each attemptaccording to the instructions on the entry form/scoresheet. It is recommended that multiple scorers beassigned to each basket for scoring accuracy andcomparison. All scores should be verified before thenext contestant is allowed to shoot. The use ofvideotape recording of the competition is notrecommended to resolve questions on scoring totals.The judges and scorers and actual entry form/scoresheets should determine final scores.warm-up tosses are permitted for the tie-breaker rounds.Successive rounds of five free throws each continueuntil a winner emerges.International Level International champions aredetermined on the basis of best scores submitted fromthe state-level competitions in each age category.NOTE:In the event that a winner in anylevel cannot participate in thenext level of competition, thesecond- place winner shouldrepresent the area for that agegroupAUTHORITY The Knights of Columbus Free ThrowChampionship program will be under the authorityof the state deputy and state youth director. To break a tie, contestants take asecond round of five free throws. No warm-up tosses arepermitted for the tie-breaker rounds. Hereare steps to follow to ensure asuccessful Free ThrowChampionship.COUNCIL COMPETITION Free Throw Championshipsshould never be held on aschool day unless allparticipants are able to attend. This could be a goodmembership recruitmentopportunity. Some of the fathersattending your event are likelyto be practical Catholics whoare eligible to join a council.Have one of two Knights fromyour Membership Committeeset up a table for recruiting.Stock it with membershippamphlets and Form 100’s tohand out. To grab theirattention, use a poster such as#4355 E, “In Service To One, InService To All” (available fromin the supply catalog) or set upsome refreshments. Make sureyou get the phone number ofpotential recruits to performadequate follow-up procedures.The council Free ThrowChampionship chairman should: Always use the program’sofficial name: Knights ofColumbus Free ThrowChampionship. Order the Knights of ColumbusFree Throw Championship Kit(#FT-KIT) using the order formon page 5 of the Council ReportForms Booklet (#1436) onpage 9 of this booklet, or atwww.kofc.org/forms. Completeand submit the form to theDepartment of FraternalServices. Order as early aspossible.Page 4 Set a time and place. Contactparks, schools, communitycenters or youth centers andreserve a basketball court. Asklocal sports teams, colleges oruniversities to work with yourcouncil on the Free ThrowChampionship as part of theircommunity outreach program.While January is the month forconducting a councilcompetition, councils can beflexible and work around theschedules of such teams. Alllocal competitions should bescheduled so that the winnerscan participate in the districtcompetitions. Contact the schools in your areato explain the program. Seekpermission of theprincipals/athleticdirectors/superintendents toconduct the program as part oftheir physical education orintramural program, or ask for anendorsement encouragingstudents to participate in thiscommunity sports program. Highschool athletes should bereminded to check with theirstate high school athleticassociation about possibleeligibility conflicts. Contactofficials from the town recreationdepartment or local youthbasketball leagues to promote thecompetition among their players.Teams and schools can holdpreliminary competitions todetermine winners by age groupsto advance to the councilcompetition. Make sure thatentry forms/score sheets aredistributed in advance to theofficials of the leagues or coachesof the teams. Display program postersprominently to generateattention and participation. Askto display posters in schools,youth centers, church halls,libraries, Boys & Girls Clubs,skating rinks, shopping centers,YMCA and YWCA buildings andthe council home. On the posterindicate the name of the contactperson, the date, time andlocation of the competition, anda telephone number to call foradditional information on thecompetition. Supplement theseposters with newspaper ads,radio and TV spots and otherpublicity. Additional posters areavailable at no charge from theSupreme Council office.Preregister contestants wheneverpossible. Preregistration will boost thenumber of participants and savetime at the actual event bymaking the competition runquicker and smoother. Distributeentry forms/score sheets toaforementioned locations.Personally deliver entryforms/score sheets to physicaleducation teachers and coacheswhen possible. Try to collectCash or bonds mustnot be awarded at anylevel of competitionsince that maycompromise theamateur status of thecontestant.

Conduct the competition by therules covered in this booklet.Plan to open the doors an hourbefore the actual event to allowfor the registration of walk-inparticipants. If space allows, letearly visitors take warm-upshots if they wish to do so.Organize entry forms/scoresheets by age and gender. Makea final check of equipment andsee that the regulation-sizebasketballs are available andtemporary foul lines are clearlymarked with non-residue tape.Verify that judges and scorershave been properly advised oftheir duties and responsibilities.Use the entry form/score sheetto record each participant’sscore. This form, and proof ofage, must accompany eachchampion as he or sheprogresses through the higherlevels of competition.All council-level participantsshould shoot their free throwsduring the scheduled hours ofthe competition and under thesame conditions as all othercompetitors. No participantsshould be allowed to attempttheir free throws at a specialtime, and will be disqualifiedif allowed to do so. Present participation certificates(#1597) to all participants, andcouncil champion certificates(#1809) to the winners at theend of the competition. TheFree Throw Championship Kitcontains 75 certificates forcompetitors. TwelveChampions’ certificates are alsoincluded. The Supreme Council SupplyDepartment has availableplaques suitable for councilchampions. These plaquesinclude an engraving plateidentifying the “Knights ofColumbus Free ThrowChampionship” and space forthe winner’s name to beengraved. Plaques should beordered from the Department byusing the order coupon locatedon page 9 of this guide. Sew-on patches (#FT-P) bearingthe phrase “Knights of ColumbusFree Throw Championship” areavailable from the SupremeCouncil Supply Department.Patches can be ordered inpackages of 25 at a cost of 29 byusing a Requisition Form (#1) orthe coupon on page 9. Thesepatches may be presented toparticipants and/or champions. Personalize the sample pressrelease on page 6 by announcingthe council winners and sendcopies to local and diocesannewspapers and radio stations. Immediately following yourcouncil’s championship, the grandknight must complete and submitthe Free Throw ChampionshipParticipation Form (#FT-1) foundon page 7 of the Council ReportForms Booklet and included inthis guide as well as the FreeThrow Kit. This feedbackprovides valuable statistics forparticipation and an overallassessment of the program.Include the number ofparticipants in the council’scompetition as well as thenumber who participated in anypreliminary school or leaguecompetitions. Provide the entry forms/score sheetsand the proofs of age for the councilwinners to the district deputy forthe district competition. Make sureyour council number is filled in.Inform council competition winnersof the date, time and location of thedistrict competition and any otherlevels of competition to which theyadvance. Be sure that a council officialaccompanies council winners to allupcoming competitions as theyadvance. In the event that a winnerin any level cannot participate inthe next level of competition, thesecond-place winner shouldrepresent the area.Page 5
PUBLICIZING YOUR EVENTOne of the best ways to make sure your council’s free throw program is a success is to publicize it.The program must always be referred to as the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship.After reserving a basketball court and setting a date for the championship, use the sample press release onthis page to announce the event.Retype it, double spaced, on council letterhead, filling in the necessary information giving the who, what,when and where of your council’s scheduled Free Throw Championship. Make sure to include the nameand phone number of a contact person.Ask editors to publish a reminder closer to the date of the championship or to list it in the community orweekend calendars. Talk with assignment editors and suggest the championship as a great opportunity for afeature story. Make arrangements for a story about your winners. Personally deliver or send their names,ages and stories, along with clipart logos (available at www.kofc.org/clipart), to the editors of both localnews and sports sections of secular and diocesan newspapers. Contact local high schools and college athletic departments about the possibility of holding your FreeThrow Championship competition prior to a game and then presenting the awards to the champions duringhalftime. If there is a professional or semiprofessional franchise in your area contact its public relationsoffice to see if arrangements can be made to honor winners of your competition during halftime. Also,approach teams about the possibility of getting players to present awards to your champions. Local sportsteams, including sports other than basketball, may also be willing to donate uniforms, autographedbasketballs and other similar items as awards or prizes for your champions.Sample AnnouncementCOMPETITION CHAMPIONS ANNOUNCEMENTKnights of Columbus Crown Free Throw Champions(Number of winners) boys and girls from (town or towns), ages 9 to 14, were named localchampions of the (year) Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship and have earned theright to compete at the district level.
