Welcome to the AASHE 2015Conference & ExpoThe Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE)is pleased to celebrate its tenth anniversary in Minneapolis with more than 2,000campus sustainability leaders at the AASHE 2015 Conference & Expo. This multi-day event is designed to empower you and the rest of the highereducation community to be a foundation for a thriving, equitable and ecologicallyhealthy world. Hear from inspirational keynote speakers, attend the plenary sessionof most interest to you, meet other sustainability leaders to exchange ideas atworkshops, tours, case studies, panel discussions and more - all while we examinethis year’s theme, Transforming Sustainability Education. With more than 400 sessions available for AASHE attendees to expand theirknowledge and confer with peers, Minneapolis was an obvious choice for this year’sconference thanks to the environmental initiatives at the Minneapolis ConventionCenter and the city’s focus on sustainability advancements. City actions includeengaging the community with its energy challenge and a recently introducedclimate action plan. Additionally, Minneapolis has many green buildings includingthe Minneapolis Public Library where low-growing prairie plants reduce stormrunoff and the Minnesota Twins Ballpark (Target Field) that includes more than 300bicycle parking spaces near the entrance. We invite you to explore the city throughone of the bike paths or other public transportation options during your downtimeat the conference. As the conference concludes, we are confident you will walk away with new ideasand inspiration on how you can transform sustainability education at your campusor organization!Sincerely,Meghan Fay ZahniserAASHE Executive Director

ADVERTISEMENTDear Colleagues,Iowa’s public universities – the University of Northern Iowa, Iowa State University, and the University of Iowa – extend a warm welcome to the 2015 AASHE Conferenceand Expo. Our universities are proud to come together to serve as joint institutionalhosts for this exciting event.Steven LeathPresidentIowa State UniversityJean E. Robillard, MDInterim PresidentVice President for Medical AffairsThe University of IowaIowa was the first state to have all four-year public universities earn a STARS Goldrating. Our Iowa Regents’ universities have embraced our responsibility to futuregenerations, recognizing that all of our actions today have ramifications for how ourgrandchildren’s grandchildren will live. The moral imperative of working towardssustainable practices is fortunately mirrored in an economic imperative, for oureconomy will be successful only if we embrace a new way of doing business. In addition to preparing our students to be responsible citizens through innovativecurriculum and the use of our campuses as living laboratories, we also model bestpractices with our facilities through energy conservation, waste reduction, carbonefficient transportation, and use of renewable energies. We have made tremendousstrides but we can, and we must, do more. Our students remind us of this constantly. As sustainability leaders, they challenge usto come up with innovative ways of engaging difficult issues. They care deeply aboutimproving the quality of life for all and working for a just and compassionate society. While you are here, I hope you take a moment to learn about the sustainabilityinitiatives at each of our schools. I wish you a successful conference and once again, welcome!Bill RuudPresidentUniversity of Northern Iowa

Our Duluth campus issteeped in the natural resources surrounding it, from its Great Lake tonortheast Minnesota’s woods and rivers. The Morris campus shines as asocially conscious beacon on the prairie, a liberal arts college fully engagedwith the land and renewable energy, and we are proud that Chancellor JacquieJohnson served as AASHE’s former chair. University of MinnesotaRochester is building a new institution from the ground up, with an emphasison health care but with a do-things-differently attitude. Finally, the TwinCities campus is Minnesota's flagship research university—and one of thenation’s most comprehensive—located in the heart of the vibrant cultural andeconomic metropolitan area of Minneapolis and St. Paul.On these campuses and at more than 30 research and outreach centersthroughout the state, we live our commitment to sustainability.
