During this time themaintenance crew of the facility informed our servicepersonnel about other LTC issues on different units.The customer was having difficulty with one type ofLTC in their fleet that required frequent maintenanceresulting in downtime and loss of revenue. ABBaccepted the task of overcoming the customer’sspecial operational requirements which involvedreviewing the design capabilities of the unit. Afterreviewing mechanical strengths and electricalclearances, ABB developed a design for a completeLTC replacement that would increase reliability andreduce the maintenance frequency. Included in theproject were a detailed set of drawings and a bill ofmaterials.New LTC throat is entering the facility through the wall openingThis process reduced the cutting and welding workand also kept active parts from being exposed tothe atmosphere, thus minimizing the chance ofcontamination. The increase in size of the newLTC and the limited work environment made theexecution of the project challenging. A wall openingwas created in order to get the LTC close to thetransformer and allow for easy access to the parts.The customer had a very critical production schedulewhich required ABB to develop design templates. Thisallowed ABB to pre-fit all components to verify theaccuracy of the parts and if any improvements wereneeded to reduce the total execution time. The retrofitwas completed successfully within the given outageperiod with no production loss to the customer.
