VOLUME 1 ISSUE 1MAY 2014DAVES CREEK CHRONICLEDAVES CREEK ELEMENTARYCUMMING, GEORGIADramatic DolphinsBy: Kristine Yin, NitikaKumaresan, Komal NambiarHave you ever beento a play? When yousit down and enjoythe performance doyou ever think aboutall the time that isrequired to memorizethe lines, design costumes, and buildprops? The DavesCreek Drama clubworks hard all yearunder the directionof Mrs. Lyons andMs. Ingrassi, preparing for their end ofthe year shows. Thisyear they will perform Peter Pan,Hamlet, and Alice inWonderland.Memorizing yourlines for an entireplay and knowingwhen to speak takesa lot of dedication.Keaton Costello, who is Captain Hookin Peter Pan, hassome good tips forlearning your lines.“You should spendsome time alonereading your lines. Then ask a familymember to read theline right before yourline. This will helpyou know when it isyour time to speak. The students who areperforming in Hamlet have an even bigger challenge whenlearning their lines.Hamlet is a famousplay written byShakespeare. Thelanguage is hard tounderstand. AverySvehla, who playsPolonies in Hamletwas up for the challenge. Last yearAvery was in Charlieand the ChocolateFactory so this yearshe wanted to tryShakespeare. “Atfirst the languagewas hard to get usedto but we play fungames to help uslearn our lines, saidAvery. “My favoritegame that we playwith Ms. Ingrassi iswhen we have to sayour lines as fast aswe can without looking at our scripts. Ifsomeone makes amistake then wehave to start all overagain. It is a lot offun and we have tomade it to the endwithout any mistakesa few times,” explained Avery. Not only do actorshave to learn theirlines but they alsohave to memorizewhere to stand andmove when on stage.RJ Gay, who plays aLost Boy in PeterPan, has a swordfighting scene withthe pirates. “This ismy favorite part,”said RJ, Ms. Ingrassihelps us practice sothat it will look realistic.”Another importantpart of a play is thecostumes. They helpbring the charactersof a play to life. TheFORSYTH COUNTY SCHOOLSDaves Creek theaterclub members maketheir own costumes.Mrs. Lyons explained, “The students make their owncostume but theyhave a costumescheme.” EmmaO’Connor, who is acaterpillar in Alice inWonderland, was soexcited to receive hercostume scheme.Mrs. Lyons gave hera general idea ofwhat it had to looklike but there were nolimits on how creative she could be. “Iam using tubes formy arms and glovesfor my hands,” saidEmma. Yonnie Daniel, who is a Queen ofHearts soldier, madea huge Queen ofHearts card out ofpaper and cardboard. The Daves CreekDrama Club has beenhad at work sinceSeptember workingon their performances.
