IntroductionThe Collins English Dictionary definesaffirmation as: “A statement of the truth ofsomething; assertion.”Affirmations are a powerful ingredient inpositive thinking. They are not statementsthat you wish to be true; they arestatements that you must believe are true.Affirmationsarepositivestatementsdescribing a desired condition in your life. That condition may not yet exist, but theaffirmation is spoken as though it does. Asimple example might be: “I am at peacewith my life.” This is repeated several timeson a daily basis, out loud or mentally, theaim being to program the subconsciousmind into producing the desired outcome. They must be sincerely felt, and spoken in

the present tense with conviction andenthusiasm. We carry out such mental programmingevery day whether we know it or not; thetrickistomakethisprogrammingconscious and positive. The alternative isto be unaware that we are issuing negativeaffirmations to ourselves. If you have evermade a mistake and muttered “I am suchan idiot”, you have given yourself anegative affirmation. The problem is thatany negative affirmation you give entersyour subconscious mind and has a harmfuleffect – it creates your reality.Positive thinking as a popular psychologycan be traced back to 1937, with NapoleonHill’s bestselling Think and Grow Rich. Thisbook remains important today, although

there have been countless similar guideswritten in the years since on the subject ofpositive thinking for personal success. Many books on positive thinking, like Thinkand Grow Rich, focus mainly on thefinancial benefits to be gained from alteringyour thoughts. The reason for this isobvious: it taps into the desire of so manypeople to become wealthy.Whilst this may be geared to capturing thepublic imagination, it may also givedoubtersandnewcomersthewrongimpression. People buy these booksexpecting some incredible revelation, anddo not expect to be told that all they haveto do is start thinking positively. The answer is so simple it is easy todismiss it, but simple does not always

mean easy. Reprogramming a mind thathassufferednegativethoughtsandaffirmations for years can be tough.Despite the plethora of Think and GrowRich-typebooks,positivethinkingisinfinitely more than trying to make yourselfrich. The people most likely to get rich offsuch financially-oriented books on positivethinking are the authors. The rest of us canbe left feeling a little cheated, and thereforedisillusioned with the whole notion. This is a great shame, because positivethinking has the power to transform yourlife, and affirmations are the cornerstone ofbeginning and maintaining this successfultransformation.

Why Make an Affirmation?Personal GoalsPositive affirmations are made becauseyou want to achieve something. That maybe more money, a new car, a bigger house,a better job, more success, or, on a morepersonal level, love, health, happiness orpeace. We all have such desires – wewould be strange if we didn’t. But theseoutcomes can sometimes seem so farbeyond our grasp that we do not really dareto think that they could be ours for theasking. Instead, we focus on how far awayfrom our desired outcomes we are, andnegative affirmations become our mantra. We desire to be wealthy, so we think:I’m never going to be rich.

We want that promotion, so we think:It’s bound to go to someone else. We want love in our life, so we think:No one’s going to love me.We are thinking about the things we want, but from a negative perspective. If this istrue, then there should be no doubt as towhy it is a good idea to flip the coin andstart talking positively. It is not as thoughwe are being forced to start doingsomething we aren’t doing already, or thatis in any way laborious. How much effortdoes it take to say one sentence toyourself? And wouldn’t it be nice to speakto yourself in positive terms for a change?Be Careful What You Wish For

You will doubtless have heard this sayingin the past. In full, it says: “Be careful whatyou wish for; you may just get it.”This may appear an odd saying, becausewho in their right mind would wish fornegative things to happen? Unfortunately, too many of us are thinking negativethoughts every day. Look at the examplesabove – how it is so easy to have a positivedesire that is expressed in a negative way.Take the example of your desire for apromotion. Instead of repeating to yourself:“The promotion is mine”, you think: It’sbound to go to someone else. Perhaps thisis a means of protecting yourself fromdisappointment, but what you are actuallydoing is repeating a negative affirmation.Yoursubconsciousisreceivingthemessage that you will not be promoted, and

it interprets this as an order. You may thinkthat your subconscious cannot affect thedecision made by your boss, but yournegativity comes through loud and clear.Your boss may be looking at you and feelreluctant to promote you because theysense you are not the positive person theywant in a position of increased power. So you fail to win the promotion largelybecause you have been thinking you won’t,and your boss has picked up on somethingnegative that they don’t like. Although youdidn’t actually wish that you would fail, youhelped make it happen because failure wasthe dominant thought in your mind. Theabove saying may speak of wishes, but itmore correctly refers to thoughts that areuppermost in your mind for the majority of

the time. In other words: “Be careful whatyou think of; you may just get it.”The results that are manifested in your lifecan be directly affected by the thoughts inyour head, and the affirmations you give toyourself. The PMA/NMA CoinAnother good reason to create positiveaffirmations for yourself is because it is sosimple to do. As already mentioned, thatdoes not mean it is necessarily an easyprocess to carry out – which will be dealtwith in the next chapter – but it is certainlya simple process to understand. In positive thinking, your mental attitude isoften referred to as a coin. It’s an aptdescription. You have two forms of mental

attitude: a positive mental attitude (PMA),and a negative mental attitude (NMA). Justlike the heads and tails of a coin. And justlike a coin, it can be flipped very easily andit will never come to rest on its edge. Thismeans there is no third option of a neutralmental attitude. It is either positive or it isnegative. When something is so easy to understand, there is very little reason to simply stare atyour coin and leave it lying there with itsNMA side upwards. Whenever you noticethat you are feeling negative, or you catchyourself making a negative comment toyourself, make a conscious effort to flip thecoin to its PMA side, and counter thenegative thought with a positive affirmation. As wonderfully complex as your mind is, itdoes not have the capability to focus on

more than one thought at any one time. Ifyou are thinking a negative thought, youcan instantly dismiss it by bringing apositive thought to mind.ControllingandUnderstandingtheSubconscious MindThis is a useful life-skill, and affirmationscan help forge closer links between yourconscious mind and your subconsciousmind.Once you start making your positiveaffirmations and you begin to see that theyare working, you have proven your abilityto control a part of yourself that remains outof reach to so many other people. Yoursubconscious mind is like the registry ofyour computer. A computer’s registry is itsdatabase that stores configuration settings

and options. Most people have a vagueidea it’s there, some may realize what itdoes, but very few will be able to open it upand start deleting or adjusting any of itskeys or values because they won’t knowwhat anything in there means. You need to understand that it is possibleto adjust your subconscious mind, andpositive affirmations are the way to do this.It is how you can clear out all the redundantand harmful data your subconsciousstores, and allow you to know exactly whyyou may be behaving in a certain way in acertain situation. When a computer is behaving oddly orsluggishly, it is often a muddled andmessed up registry that’s responsible.Even when you delete a program, there will

usually be remnants of it remaining in theregistry. Your aim with positive affirmationsis to reprogram your subconscious, and tocontinue to clear out any negative tracesthat remain from your previous way ofthinking.Positive affirmations help you becomemore in tune with how your subconsciousoperates, and why you may respond poorlyin certain circumstances. The more youprogram your mind positively, the moreeasily you will recognize negative activityand be able to jump on it and delete it.Equally, you will find that you are far ftenyourbringanswers to difficult dilemmas in your life.Overcoming Bad Habits

Depending on how they are phrased, affirmations can create good or bad habits. You may start out with affirmations thatrelate to some grand goals, such as abetter career, or a more peaceful life, butdon’t forget that affirmations can be appliedto any area of your life. They can be usedto help control your weight, to quit smoking,to cut back on the booze, so stop bitingyour fingernails. You name the habit, and apositive affirmation can be phrased to dealwith it.Increased ConfidencePositive affirmations have a knock-oneffect beyond the result named in theaffirmation. As your life gradually improves, you will feel a sense of growing confidence, whether or not you have ever phrased an

affirmation regarding a boost in yourconfidence levels. This is the naturalconsequence of personal achievement.Your outlook on life changes and your selfimage is transformed. You create avirtuous circle where a vicious one mayhave existed before.Better Physical HealthAgain, this will be a side-effect of positiveaffirmations even when you have notphrased one that relates directly to yourhealth. Negative emotions are draining onthe psyche, and this can have a ity causes you to feel lethargic, andcan cause genuine physical illness. Wherepositive affirmations can make you feel atease, negative thoughts and habits cause

you dis-ease. This is why people developpsychosomatic illnesses.Psychosomatic means mind (psyche) andbody (soma), and an illness of this sorttherefore involves both the mind and thebody. You will have heard the phrase “sickwith worry”. It is entirely possible to makeyourself ill through stressful thoughts. Some physical diseases are thought to beparticularly affected by mental factors suchas stress and anxiety. Psoriasis, eczema, stomach ulcers, IBS, high blood pressure, and heart disease, for example, are allaggravated by negative thoughts. In fact, there is a mental aspect to every physicaldisease in how we react to it and cope withit.

Positive affirmations can improve yourhealth in three ways: Firstly, your mindsetis healthier overall with a positive mentalattitude, thus your immune system isstronger; secondly, a specific affirmationcan be phrased to augment your health andcounter illness appearing; thirdly, they canbe used to speed recovery if you do get ill.Happier ionships, as other people instinctivelyrespond better to positive vibes andsuccess. This can affect every type ofrelationship in your life – with your ds,strangers, workcolleagues, and your boss.

Again, this is an area that will naturallyimprove as your affirmations take effect, even if they have not been targeted at yourrelationships. You are far more likely to besuccessful if you have created a moreattractive aura for yourself through positiveaffirmations.Because Everything Begins in MindThis is the truth that underpins positiveaffirmations, andpositivethinkinggenerally. This is the concept that must beaccepted if you are to truly embrace thepossibility that positive affirmations canimprove your life and bring success. The easiest way to verify this statement isto simply look around you right now. Apartfrom Nature, everything you can seestarted life as a thought in the mind of a

human being. The clothes you wear, thecar you drive, the street you drive along, the house you live in, the TV you watch, thebooks you read, the computer you work at,the chair you sit in, the company you workfor, everything started out as an idea inmind. That should make you think. The power ofyour mind to invent and achieve ispractically limitless.

How to Make AffirmationsRemember that affirmations program themind as you would program your computer. In the computing world there is anacronym: GIGO. It stands for: Garbage In,Garbage Out. This means that yourcomputer can and will only respond to whatis input into its system. If your machine isrunning cleanly, then you download andinstall a program and your computercrashes, it’s likely that the program had avirus. If you put garbage into a computer, you can expect to get garbage out.Be Genuinely PositiveIt is the same with the human mind. Youcannot consistently program your mindwith negativity and expect that good thingswill be the result. When you approach the

affirmations process, you must makecertain that you do so with a positive frameof mind. Making successful affirmations isfar more than speaking a few words in a setorder. You may speak ten differentaffirmations each morning and evening, butif you don’t really believe that the wholeaffirmation process can work, you will mostlikely follow each one with a negativethought or comment that screws up all yourgood work. For example:You affirm: “I am a happy and successfulperson.”You think: Yeah, buddy, in your dreams. You affirm: “I am a wealthy individual.”You think: Sure, once I win the lottery.

You affirm: “My mind is at peace with theworld.”You think: When I’m half-cut perhaps.Yougettheidea.Makingpositiveaffirmations is not enough. You mustbelieve them to be true to the exclusion ofany and all counterproductive thoughts orfeelings. Cynicism is a sure fire way tonegate positive affirmations.Use Positive WordingAlthough it may seem silly even , this is an essential part of framinga positive affirmation and refers to thespecific words you choose. For example, toquit smoking, you should not say: “I don’twant to smoke anymore.” Instead, you

could try: “I am free from smoking”, or “I liveasmoke-free,healthylife.”Youraffirmations should be about what youdesire to happen, not about what you don’twant to happen.Use the Present TenseWe live our lives in the present moment. Itmay not seem that way when you areworrying about the future or regretting thepast, but there is really nothing more thanwhat is happening now. We hear peoplesay that you have to live in the moment, and we understand the sense in doing so,but it remains a notoriously difficult practiceto master. However, in positive thinking and inpositive affirmations especially, the presenttense is paramount; if not your ability to

actually live in the moment, certainly yourwillingness to accept its importance inreprogramming your mind.Your mind works in the present tense. Itknows no other way to think. We create apast for ourselves in our memories and theemotions attached to them.We build a future for ourselves with ourhopes and desires, or fears and sorrows. But our mind lives in the now. This meansthat any negative thoughts about your pastthat you carry with you at this momentcreate your present. You are perpetuating your past. You knowhow this works. If you recall a very sadsituation, even from many years ago, it canmake you cry. Your mind is interpreting thismemory as happening now, and creates an

appropriateresponse.Itcannotdifferentiate between what happened tenyears ago and what happened ten secondsago; it can only react to what is in your mindright now.The upshot for your positive affirmations isthat they must be phrased so that the mindcan act upon them at this moment in time, therefore you must use the present tense.Let’s take the obvious example, andassume you want to be rich. You havethree options as to how this is phrased:1. The past tense – In this case you mightsay: “I always wanted to be rich.” Your mindtakes this to mean that you did want to berich but not anymore, therefore it does nottake the required actions to bring it about.

2. The future tense – In this case, youmight say: “I will be a rich person.” Thismight seem the obvious choice becauseyou are planning for your future, but this isalso the wrong way to phrase youraffirmations. Your mind interprets this asmeaning that you will be rich in the future, but not now, so fails to take any action.3. The present tense – In this scenario, you might say: “I am a rich person.” Don’tworry, your mind is not going to take issuewith you on this because you may notactually have very much money; rather itwill respond by attempting to create thecircumstances to match the affirmation. You have, in effect, given your mind anorder that must be acted upon now.

If this smacks of a little self-delusion, this isjust something you have to cope with. Youare programming your mind in the way itmust be programmed.Clearly, you have to exercise a little cautionhere. Telling your mind you are rich doesnot instantly put money in the bank. If yousee a Ferrari drive by, you can say: “ThatFerrari is my car”, but that does not meanyou should run to your bank and withdrawall your funds to put down a deposit at yourlocal Ferrari dealership. Such behaviourwill obviously provoke immense panic onyour part once you realize you now can’tbuy a tin of beans for dinner, and thus it willwork against your positive attitude.Talking in the present tense is not aboutdeluding yourself or ignoring your current

reality; it is about giving your mind orders inthe language it best understands.Be PassionateThis almost goes without saying, becauseif you have heartfelt desires you shouldautomatically be passionate about them. However, there may be times in your lifewhen the burdens of the world are weighingon you and your affirmations take a knock.Your mood drops and you cannot summonthe enthusiasm for even those people orthings closest to your heart. Just rememberthat this can become a vicious circle, andthe only way to break it is to replace yournegativity with positive thoughts. Makingthe effort to repeat your affirmationspassionately can help resurrect your moodin very little time.

Add Visualization and Other SensesThis may come naturally to some peoplewho think in visual images, but it issomething everyone should be practicingwhen they speak their positive affirmations. This is most effective when you have a littlequiet time for your affirmations, so you cansit down and close your eyes and back upyour words with your senses.Let’s stick with the Ferrari example.Owning a Ferrari might represent thepinnacle of achievement for some people. It may be the only affirmation they utter, because they know that they will only cometo own one through the attainment of richesgenerally. So here’s the affirmation: “I own a FerrariF430 Spider.” Naming the car makes it

specific and personal and allows for adeeper emotional involvement. But tomake this affirmation as powerful aspossible, you should know what one lookslike so you can visualize it and see yourselfsitting in it; you should know what onesounds like; you should be able to smell theleather interior; you should be able to feelthe vibrations from the engine.Your intention must be to convince yourmind that your affirmation is real in everydetail, and this means bringing as manysenses into play as possible.Be Patient and PersevereThere is a saying: “Good things come tothose who wait.” Affirmations do notproduce immediate results, so be preparedfor this. Unless you win the lottery, your

dreams of instant riches are unrealistic.Depending on the desired outcome of youraffirmation, you may be waiting days, weeks, months or years. Be patient andkeep up with your affirmations. As Often as PossibleYour affirmations need to be spokenregularly for them to be effective. This iswhere the analogy with computers ends. You program a computer once and it is allsetup.Notsowithaffirmations.Affirmations work with repetition. In thisrespect, it is more akin to training a puppy. You get it to obey the command to sit, butthe next time it is too interested in chewingyour shoe. It is only with repetition that thepenny finally drops and you achieve your

desired results. The mind needs to betrained in exactly the same manner.Your mind is prone to drifting and going itsown sweet way. This is why so manypeople are at the mercy of their emotionsand their thoughts; why their lives seem soout of control. The orders you give to yourmind need to be given regularly. Could youtrain a dog by telling it to “Sit!” once aweek?Equally, no matter how many times you toldit, could you train a dog by telling it “I alwayswanted you to sit!”, or “You will sittomorrow!”? The only way to do it is tospeak in the present tense and repeat theorder until the message gets through. Thisalso highlights the importance of keepingyour affirmations short and to the point.

This makes them easier to remember andpunchier. As for exactly how many times to repeatyour affirmations, the answer is as often aspossible. You should always strive to dothis in the morning and the evening outloud. These might be 5 to 10 minutesessions that really focus the mind. However, the time in the morning when youare still half-asleep in bed is also idealbecause your brainwaves are still in alpha, whichisconsideredtheoptimumbrainwave activity for connection with theuniverse. During the day, of course therewill be times when you are concentratingon other matters, but there will also benumerous opportunities when it is possible.

Whenever your mind is free, put it to workwith your affirmations. Even if you cannotspeak out loud or close your eyes andengageyoursenses, repeatyouraffirmations mentally to yourself. As far as possible, try to attain a relaxedmood during your affirmations. Stress andtension detract from your mind’s ability tofocus.

Useful AffirmationsHere are a few ideas for affirmations. For Love and Peace I am happy My mind is at peace I am calm and relaxed at all times My thoughts are under my control I am surrounded by love I radiate love and peace I have a loving relationship with mywife/husband I am at peace with the Universe I love and accept myself I am surrounded with loving people I am loving and accepting of others I trust the wisdom of my inner being

I am always connected with DivineLoveFor Prosperity and Success I am getting wealthier every day I study and learn fast I have the perfect job I am living in my dream house I am successful in whatever I do I always have enough money Everything is getting better every dayFor Health My body is healthy I have lots of energy and vitality I can control my health I can maintain my ideal weight

Obviously, you can tinker with these andcome up with your own to exactly suit yourpersonal goals and desires. Just rememberto keep them positive, present tense, andpassionate.

Cosmic AffirmationsYou should already understand very wellhow affirmations can be used to improvethe quality of your thoughts at a personallevel. It is not difficult to grasp how apositive attitude can create a moreattractive and amenable personality, sothat other people respond more positivelyin return. However, there is another aspect toaffirmations, and that is how positivethoughts are transmitted to the universe. This is an area that requires a leap of faith, although there is also sound evidence forbelievingthatsuchaformofcommunication is possible.Firstly, let’s look at what this deals with. The suggestion here is that we are a

minuscule part of a cosmic whole. Thatcosmic whole is the creator of everything inthe universe and it goes by various names. Some obviously refer to it as God or theDivine; others who are not religious call ittheUniversalMind,UniversalConsciousness, or Cosmic Power. As weare a part of it, so our thoughts areconnected with it, and we can thereforecommunicate our thoughts and desires toit. As it is the ultimate creator of everythingin existence, and continues to be so, it isthus able to reply to our desires and createthe exact circumstances in our lives that wehave requested. However, just like our ownminds, the Universal Mind is an order-takerand so we have to be extremely carefulwhat we ask for, i.e. think of.

It is not unusual for people to balk at thisidea. We look in the mirror and see aseparate entity, connected to nothing elsearound us in physical terms other than theground we stand on. Our border is definedby our skin, and it is therefore easy to doubta connection to anything outside ourselves. However, your cell phone is also aseparate entity, yet you do not deny itsability to connect you with another personon the other side of the world with no wiresinvolved. Why then is it such a leap tosuppose there is a form of communicationthat might allow our thoughts to be sent halfway around the world, and to all parts of theworld? There is certainly plenty of anecdotalevidence of telepathic abilities in humans, and many laboratory tests have proven that

information can be transmitted from oneperson’s mind to another in a remotelocation. Perhaps this is the tip of theiceberg. Perhaps these people are just theselect few who are cognizant of theirabilities. It might be that we all have thispower but are not sufficiently aware of it tobother trying to channel it.Thankfully, to a certain extent, science canhelp us overcome our doubts aboutuniversalcommunication.Inscientificterms, everything in the universe is madeup of just one thing: atoms. The atom is abasic unit of matter consisting of a rons.cloudofAlthoughthis matter may take on different forms –solid, liquid, gas and plasma – so that we

see differentobjectsallaround us,everything is matter.More importantly, the atoms in your bodyare actually 99.99% vacuum, which meanspure energy. These are the same atomsthat are found in everything else in theuniverse. Energy is in us, flows through us,and is all around us. We may not be able tosee it, but we are all connected to eachother and to everything else in theuniverse. Although it is certainly not proofbeyond a reasonable doubt, it does at leastprovide a theoretical reason why youraffirmations can be carried far and wide.

The New Theory Behind AffirmationsBefore you can hope to master theuniverse, however, you must learn tomaster yourself, and so we will end with areturn to the more personal level, and apopulartheoryfrominternationally-respected neuroscientist, Candace Pert,Ph.D. Her theories, based on her discoveryof opiate receptors – cellular binding sitesfor brain endorphins – and her furtherlaboratory research, may explain exactlyhow your thoughts and affirmations createyour personal reality.Whatfollowsprovidesacompletelydifferent perspective on why we mustwatch our thoughts at all times and try tomaintain a healthy, positive mental attitude.

This first part is fact. Human beings aremade up of around 50 trillion eukaryotecells, which are cells with a nucleus thatcarries our DNA. The fact that each ofthese does carry DNA means that eachone contains the equivalent of all thebody’s functional systems – y, endocrine, immune, muscle andskeletal, integument(skin),andreproductive. Each cell is a living organismin its own right, and has the capability togrow as a single entity when placed in aPetri dish. Consider the furore over stemcell research at the moment because of itspotential to ess
