Welcome to LondonPaying for your travelPublic transport is the best way to getaround London and discover all that thecity has to offer. This guide will help youplan how to get around the Capital onpublic transport.There are different ways to pay for yourtravel. For most people, pay as you go paying for the trips you make - with acontactless payment card, an Oyster card ora Visitor Oyster card, is the best option as itoffers value, flexibility and convenience.If you have just arrived at an airport and arelooking for ways to get to central London,go to page 11 in this guide.Getting around LondonLondon’s transport system is iconic. With itsworld famous Underground (Tube) and iconicred buses, travelling around the Capital isan experience in itself. But London is muchmore than just the Tube or the bus; our vastnetwork of transport services includes:Contactless payment cardsIf your credit, debit, charge card or wearabledevice has the contactless symbol aboveyou can use it for pay as you go travel onLondon’s public transport. Android Pay andApple Pay are also accepted.Benefits of contactless It’s quick and easy – there’s no need toqueue to buy a ticketNight TubeNight Tube services run on theJubilee, Victoria and most ofthe Central and Northern linesall night on Fridays and Saturdays.Night services on the Piccadilly line willstart running from 16 December 2016.2 It offers great value – pay as you go withcontactless is better value than buying asingle ticket and you can benefit from bothdaily and weekly capping (see page 5) 14 million people have used contactlessto travel in London – including customersfrom over 90 countriesOverseas transaction fees or charges mayapply for non-UK cards. This will be onecharge per day, not each time you travel.Please check with your card issuer. 3

Oyster cardBenefits of Oyster It offers great value – pay as you go withdaily capping (see below) is better valuethan buying a single ticket It’s convenient – you can add a seasonticket to your card, which can save youtime and money if you are staying for aweek or longer and using public transportevery dayIf you don’t have a contactless paymentcard, you can get an Oyster card. You paya 5 deposit (refundable) then add pay asyou go credit or a season ticket to pay foryour journeys.You can get an Oyster card from: Ticket machines at Tube, LondonOverground, TfL Rail and some NationalRail stations Over 4,000 local shops in London,known as Oyster Ticket Stops.Visit tfl.gov.uk/maps/oyster-ticket-stopsto find your nearest one TfL Visitor Centres (see page 15)Top tipThe amount of pay as you go credit youneed on your Oyster card depends onwhere and how much you travel. Asa guide, for unlimited journeys withinZones 1 & 2, we recommend 15 for2 days and 30 for 4 days. You canalways top up your credit if you run out.4Refund of unused credit on yourOyster cardThe pay as you go credit on your Oystercard never expires, so you can keep yourcard for your next visit to London. But, ifyou do want a refund before you leave, youcan use a ticket machine in any Tube station.We’ll refund the 5 deposit and up to 10 ofunused credit (after 48 hours of using thecard for the first time).Fare zones in LondonLondon’s rail network is divided intonine zones. On Tube, DLR, LondonOverground, TfL Rail and most NationalRail services, your fare will depend onwhich zones you travel in.What is ‘capping’?Capping allows you to make a numberof journeys in a single day or week, butlimits the amount you pay for your travel.It is calculated automatically based onthe zones you travel in and the type oftransport you use (rail, bus, and tram). 5

Up to four children under 11 also travelfree on Tube, DLR, London Overground, TfLRail and some National Rail services whenthey are with a fare-paying adult, excludingthose using Group Day Travelcards.If you’re travelling with children aged11-15, you can ask a member of staff to seta Young Visitor discount on an Oyster card,allowing them to pay as you go at half-adultrate for up to 14 days. If you are able to traveloutside of these times, you could enjoya quicker and more comfortable journey,especially if you’re carrying heavy luggage,a rucksack, or travelling in a group.Stand on the right on the escalatorsAlways stand on the right when using theescalators at Tube stations. Once you getonto the platform, always stand behind theyellow line and move along the platformwhere more space is available.Walk for a great wayto see the cityWalking in London is a greatway to get around. Look outfor our blue and yellowstreet signs and maps – theygive you useful informationabout the local areaincluding key landmarks.Santander CyclesLondon’s self-service, bike-sharing scheme.You only need a credit or debit card toget started. It costs 2 to access the bikesfor 24h, with the first 30 minutes of eachjourney included.
