2017 WORKSHOPSWorkshops are 90 for CPSA members and 105 fornon-members. A supply list will be provided to registeredattendees. Register early, as workshops can fill up quickly.Seeing the Magic of LandscapesPat Averill, CPSAABOUT PAT AVERILLCreating a landscape can be more difficult than itappears, but this workshop will encourage andinspire you to capture the beauty of nature throughobservation and simplification. Part of theprocess is to see with your heart as well as withyour eyes. You will leave the workshop feelingconfident to try a landscape in your own style.Developing a believable landscape requireslearning how to see the big picture before youget sidetracked by the details. After a PowerPointintroduction of landscape photographs, you willTango Tree, Pat Averill, CPSAhave a better understanding of what compriseseach vista and how to look for groupings of value, color, and shape rather than individualelements. The workshop emphasizes the importance of complementary colors, groupingsand negative shapes, edge variation, patterns, textures, and atmosphere to make adrawing work as a whole.Pat will demonstrate various quick and easy techniques such as using basic values tomake a thumbnail and tinting and blending with dry colored pencils. The class will usethese ideas to complete several small exercises from reference photos of sky, clouds, trees, large rocks, pebbles, grass, water, streams, and distant hills. Everyone will also aparticipate in a group project by completing a small puzzle piece to show how easy it isto work in a small area at a time.Note: odorless mineral spirits will be in use during the class.Pat Averill is a prolific artist,CPSA charter member, andcurrent treasurer of DC 201–Portland OR. Although sheattended Oregon StateUniversity and MarylhurstUniversity, her art educationcame primarily from workshops and selfstudy. It was a drawing class by Bet Borgesonthat led Pat to her calling of creating intimatelandscapes in colored pencil.Pat’s success is evidenced by 18 acceptancesinto the CPSA International Exhibition andfive awards, earning her CPSA signaturestatus with 15-year merit. Her work hasappeared in many magazines and books. For about 25 years, she has taught coloredpencil in the Portland area, at Cloudcroft ArtWorkshops, to CPSA chapters around thecountry, and in private classes. She believesteaching was her most valuable education, since preparation takes much thought andwillingness to experiment.Mastering Reflective Surfaces on MetalJeffrey Smart Baisden, CPSAABOUT JEFFREY SMART BAISDENThe sheen and reflections of metallic surfaces are a favorite, yet sometimes intimidating, subject of many colored pencilartists. This workshop will explore the drawing possibilitiesof various metal forms, colors, and surfaces as a still lifesubject. You will develop an understanding of how a metalsurface relates to its environment and learn how to recreatethese effects using colored pencils. The class will share in a process of group discussion andinteraction with hands-on participation, instructordemonstration, and a class project. Jeffrey will cover theimportance of using a camera and tripod to freeze thedesired effects and achieve unique angles in creating aJeffrey Smart Baisden withreference photo. By seeing the actual setup, you willThe Surrogates.experience firsthand how light, shadow, and coloredbackgrounds affect different metal surfaces. Using a reference photo provided by theinstructor, you will work from standard recipes to render different metals with theunderstanding of how the surface will reflect the surrounding colors. This project will teach you to how to create different effects and fast track the process. One way to speed things up is by blocking in large areas of darker values, background, and foreground with Inktense pencils, water-soluble colored pencils, and Neocolor IIcrayons. Throughout the workshop, Jeffrey will provide individual and group critiquesas needed to further your learning process.Jeffrey Smart Baisden is a long-time memberof CPSA and of DC 113–Gainesville, FL.
